"Derek!"

The subway was dark and dusty, but Mia's eyes were starting to slowly adjust. She hopped down the stairs loudly and unceremoniously, wanting to be heard.

"Derek! I know you don't have a social life so you must be here!" she shouted, peeking into the first few cars. As expected, they were empty.

She turned around, opening her mouth to yell the man's name again, but then something moved in the corner.

"And who are you?" a female voice drawled slowly. Erica stepped out of the shadows, still in the same outfit Mia had seen her in at school. She looked bored, but her face morphed into curiosity once she saw the hunter.

Mia ignored the way Erica seemed to prowl around her like a predator, rolling her eyes, "Where's Derek? I need to talk to him."

"About what?"

"Something that's clearly none of your business, since I didn't call your name," she replied acrimoniously, shooting her a bitter smile.

"You don't even know my name," the girl smirked, offering her hand, "I'm Erica."

Mia didn't shake it, "Everyone knows you after today."

"Exactly," her eyes gleamed.

"Back off, Erica," Derek joined the conversation, walking up to the two women. He looked at Mia, his eyes amused, "I was expecting you to show up eventually. You agreed to help me, remember?"

She shook her head, "I remember agreeing to help with Isaac. I wasn't aware you would doom another one."

"You call it doom, I call it improvement," Erica hummed.

"Stay out of this," Mia snapped at her, losing her patience, "You don't know anything. You're being manipulated."

"She fully consented to the bite," Derek pointed out nonchalantly. "I didn't force her."

"Right," Mia replied.

She was at a loss for words. Derek seemed stronger, which meant his pack was helping him, but she couldn't recognize him anymore. The man was crazy for power, and the newfound arrogance didn't help in Mia's desperate attempts to empathize with him.

They were just beginning to warm up to each other. Mia knew he could be kind, and gentle, and a lot more caring that he let on. But looking at him now, she was starting to doubt that. She was starting to regret ever thinking that she could feel anything for him.

"How many more?" she asked finally.

"I need at least three," he answered truthfully, which surprised her. "Then I'll stop."
