"How do you know they're going to be there?" Mia asked, gripping the edge of the car seat tightly.
"I have my sources," Kate replied. She was looking at the road, but Mia could see her prideful smirk. "All the little wolves in one spot. We've hit the jackpot."
"I still think this is a bad idea," she tried again, feeling herself grow dizzy with nerves. She had been trying to inconspicuously talk Kate out of going to Derek's house for half an hour now. "We can't kill all of them."
"We don't have to," Kate replied. The car came to a slow stop in front of the abandoned Hale house, hiding by the tree line. "I only need one. Doesn't matter which one."
She got out of the car, putting their conversation to a strict stop. Mia sighed, slammed the glove box in frustration and followed her.
Kate had roped her into her mission just to prove a point. Mia knew she was still suspicious about her bite, her loyalty to the Argents, everything. This was her sick way of letting her niece decide if she wanted to defend the werewolves or return to the hunters.
She wanted her to kill Scott and Derek, maybe even Jackson, who had nothing to do with any of it.
Kate opened the duffel bag and pulled out a rifle. She checked the bullets and hoisted it over her shoulder, then pulled out some flash weapons and arrows.
"I understand you might be very rusty, so take your pick," she smiled at her. Mia ignored the jab and scanned the contents of the bag. She didn't want to pick a powerful weapon. If Scott was really inside with Derek and Jackson, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt them.
Finally, she reached for one of the smaller guns in the black bag, but Kate grabbed her wrist.
"Honey, that's not going to do any damage," she laughed, guiding her hand to an automatic crossbow. Mia recognized it as one of her dad's favorites. "Take this one."
Reluctantly, Mia hauled the weapon out and loaded it with an arrow, praying that Scott's senses would somehow pick up that he's in danger. After glancing over all the arrowheads, she also grabbed one with a flash bolt. Even though it would blind them, at least it was a warning of the attack before the bullets came. Hopefully, they would have enough time to drop to the ground and get away.
Thankfully, Kate had interpreted her choice differently, "Good thinking. See, you are getting better."
When she was ready, Kate looked at her and nodded, "Let's rock and roll."
Mia aimed the crossbow at the house. The door was closed, so she aimed at one of the windows. Even though her aim was good, her hands were trembling. The girl closed her eyes and took a breath.
It was either her life or Scott's. She just hoped the boy would be lucky enough to get away.
Mia opened her eyes and fired the crossbow. It hit the window, shattering the glass, and the room inside erupted in a blinding light. The two women heard shouting from inside, and then Kate started showering the building with bullets. She was careless, an almost sick smile on her face as she waved the rifle in all directions.
