"I still don't think this is a great idea," Derek murmured, watching them from afar.
"Come on," Peter replied, smirking as he extended the blindfold to Mia, who was hesitating in front of him, "You can always take it off and we both know you could charm me into submission if you really tried."
He smiled at her with a challenge in his eyes. Mia, with her arms still folded against her chest, decided to test it. Her eyes glowed a soft blue, and she didn't even have to speak before Peter forcefully dropped to his knees, his eyes glazed over. She snapped him out of it, and he stood back up, grunting a little.
"See?" he glanced at Derek, who looked a little proud at the display.
Finally, Mia grabbed the blindfold and tied it around her eyes, plunging her world into darkness. Even though no real danger was present and this was just a training game, she felt vulnerable in an instant, wishing to get back her sight. She didn't really realise how easy it was to take away her ability with just a blindfold or by obstructing her eyesight in any way.
"Alright," Peter sighed, and she heard him step back a little. "You think you can't control people when you can't see their eyes, but I'm sure with a little bit of practice, we can change that. If my theories are correct, you should be able to charm me just by hearing my voice."
Mia concentrated as hard as she could, trying to listen to Peter talking, determining his exact location in the room. She let her power flow through her, but judging by the silence around her, nothing happened.
"When you lose one of your senses, your other senses get enhanced. Use it," Peter continued, and Mia heard him move around the room, going from one side of the house to the other. "Use your spatial awareness, your hearing. Imagine the room I'm in, imagine everything as if you can still see."
He was behind her, now, circling her like a predator, the floorboards creaking softly beneath him. Mia's ears were working overtime, and she mapped out the entire room in her head. To her surprise, it was fairly easy to rely on her other senses. Her father used to make her train like this, to spar and do combat lessons while blindfolded, so she could train her reflexes and intuition.
She located Peter, and unleashed her energy towards where he was in her mind. A few moments later, she heard him drop to the ground again with a thump.
"Holy shit," Derek mumbled somewhere further away.
He sounded impressed. Mia felt a thrill of pride swell up in her chest, and in return it gave her more confidence. She released her hold on Peter and focused on Derek instead, tracing his voice back to a corner of the room on her left. She had never used her power on Derek, so when the man kneeled to the ground against his will, she couldn't help but smirk to herself.
She felt powerful again.
And, as a bonus, Peter seemed impressed by her fast progress. "Very good. But it's quite easy when we're all in the same room. Let's try something a little harder."
