Mayor's body looked like it had been run over by a truck, yet there were no tracks. Both the cops and the three of us were stumped. The pattern broke. All of the other victims were black, and they were all killed on the same road. The mayor wasn't. So maybe the motive was different, but whatever this thing was, it still wasn't natural.
"Yeah?" Dean asks over the phone.
"Hey, guess what?" I chirp. He sighs.
Dean wasn't happy to be hiding this new thing that's been going on between us, but he understood where I was coming from which is all I could really ask for. I didn't even know what we were. He had reluctantly agreed to keep things low profile for now until I was ready to break the news to Sam. Again, whatever that news was. I mean, it's not like we were boyfriend and girlfriend...were we?
"What, Jenny?"
"So Sam and I went and found court records that showed the mayor bought some random abandoned property. And, apparently, it was previously owned by the Dorian family, whoever they are." I inform him as I look at the small record book Sam held in his hands. He tilts it towards me so I could see better and I smile up at him in thanks.
"Dorian?" Dean questions.
"Yeah. Why?" I don't get an answer, but instead I hear muffled voices on the other end. "Dean?"
"That's interesting." Dean's voice comes back clearly.
"What is it?"
"This Cyrus Dorian, he vanished in April of '63. The case was investigated but never solved. It was right around the time the string of murders was going on back then."
"Well, we were able to gather a lot of information on the property, and, honestly? That place must've been a crumbling mess when the mayor bought it."
"Why is that?"
"Um, cause he kinda bulldozed the place down the minute it was his." His voice comes out muffled again and I realize that Cassie must be next to him, feeding information.
"You got a date?" Dean asks.
"Date?" I ask Sam. He scans the book and points at the fine print when he finds it, turning it to me. "The 3rd of last month." I answer. Sam looks at me for answers when I don't speak after that. I purse my lips to the side and just shrug as I wait for Dean to say something.
"Mayor Todd bulldozed the Dorian family home on the third. The first killing was the very next day."
"Huh."
"What?" Sam asks. I move the phone away from my mouth.
"He said the killings started the day after the Mayor tore the place down."
"Huh."
"Yeah." I pull the phone back to me. "Ten bucks it's a spirit."
"There's nothing else I can think of that it could be." Dean agrees.
"So, want us to come pick you up or you stayin with Cassie?"
"You make me sound like I'm being babysat." Dean depanns.
"Oh, you didn't know?" I try to ask sincerely but it crumbles quickly and I'm chuckling instead.
"Haha, funny. I'm ready when you guys are."
"Alright, be there in fifteen."
"Don't scratch my bab-!" I end the call before he can finish and roll my eyes, stuffing the phone back in my pocket. I smile slyly at Sam.
