Tables are set aside after dinner and at the request of Professor Minerva McGonagall herself, the spellbound gramophone of Remus keeps emanating music. If it weren't for that the ceiling is flat and studded with stars and is an intense blue even though it is dusk, you would say it's December and they are celebrating the Christmas ball. Sitting in a corner, unable to move, James and Peter, Sirius and Remus, are watching the students dancing in unison to the music who are encouraged to go out on the dance floor, but they are unable to move.
-I've eaten too much- Peter proclaims. - If you will forgive me.
He walks on the way to the bathroom with one hand on his stomach.
James thinks maybe poor Peter is right and they had eaten a little too much. Maybe the fifth piece of cake was just too much.
- Don't say the word cake, I beg you, man.
Sirius seems on the verge of vomiting. He takes a deep breath to make room in his stomach. The only one who seems more or less whole is Remus, who always controls himself so as not to end up in the infirmary, taking some potion over-eating. Sirius has to admit that this attitude is between enigmatic and irritating. He has to admit, frankly, that he would love to see Remus lose control. And he has to acknowledge, to be totally frank, that he's been feeling unable to stop looking at him all night.
- Do you always do everything in moderation, Moony?
Remus meditates about it while drinking some punch. He has drooping eyes that will always make him look sleepy and a nose too big for his face and whatever happens, will be too freaking tall, and he will have that lower lip that falls just a little bit to the outside, like an invitation. Sirius wonders why he feels as if he is seeing his friend for the first time.
- No.
He says no more. Nor does he need to.
- Awe' Right.
The gramophone keeps turning and the students are turning with it. The first notes of "Let it be" are sounding when Lily approaches the boys. James immediately puts on guard and rises to offer her a seat but Lily does not come to sit, but to dance. After all, it's one of her favorite songs.
- Do you want to dance with me, Remus?
- Are you wearing stomp resistant shoes?
- Clumsy worthy.
He leaves the glass in James's hands, who does not take an eye off them, and at that moment, he would let one arm stick out by a mad horse to be Remus.
- Then, may the Beatles have mercy on you.
They dance. And it doesn't matter that they are in the middle of the dining room because where they arrive and turn, the music sounds clearer and so it becomes the center of the world. Lily wears her hair longer than in the early months of the course, long red hair layers to the middle of the back and other shorter ones over her shoulders, and what remains of a slowly growing fringe, it moves over her face when Remus makes her laugh and she leans her forehead against his chest and causes everyone, even Severus Snape to look rapt, just a second, wondering for what the music even existed before that night.
James does not know what he is saying but he would like to be John Lennon to inspire in her that delicacy when dancing, to sing in her ear "...And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me, Speaking words of wisdom, let it be..." and dance with her for the rest of their lives.
-Sometimes it hurts to be near something so beautiful- he tells Sirius, by the ending of the song, looking at Remus and Lily- You know what I mean?
-Yes- Sirius sighs, swallowing hard. - I know what you mean.
James is too mesmerized by the words of the song, so he doesn't fix over the excess of emotion in Sirius's voice. He is not surprised that his friend, like him, is unable to look away from the dance floor. John Lennon is convinced that "...When the broken hearted people living in the world agree there will be an answer..." and maybe he is right. Lily turns in Remus's arms, Remus turns into Lily's arms, and they both let the time pass like sand through their fingers, dancing, laughing, celebrating that they will be together even in the darkest hours, for those who have not yet found an answer.
"...Let it be" Sings our fellow John Lennon. "Just let it be".
