I DIDN'T know what to say.
I came here to help her.
I came here to get her out of this hellhole.
But after listening to her, I realized that this is not her hell.
What happened before she ended up here was her true nightmare.
Lauren was broken.
Too broken.
"I-I'm sorry . . ."
I never imagined that this is how we would meet after so many years of being apart.
"You can get me out of here, diba?" I smiled at her before nodding.
Silently swearing with all my life that I'm going to give her the justice she deserves.
"I'll get you out of here. Just hang on there for a bit. Hmm?" She bit her lip as she nodded.
"Just hang on a bit longer . . ." I pulled her closer and hugged her. I hugged her as tightly as I can.
I should have chased after her.
Kasi kung ako ang kasama niya?
Hinding-hindi ko hahayaang mangyari sa kanya 'to.
If only I was stubborn enough years ago.
She said she was afraid na madadamay nga ako sa galit ng pamilyang iyon.
But I came here knowing all of that.
And I am hell-bent on taking her out of here. They can threaten me all they want pero hindi ko na susukuan pa ulit si Lauren. Not again.
I'll never do that again.
But I need this. I need her.
"Ma . . She stared at me for a while bago niya ibinaba ang librong binabasa at tumayo para lumapit sa akin.
"Ma . . . si Lauren . .
I felt my mother's hand on my back as she tightly embraced me.
Years ago, I cried to her too when Lauren broke up with me. She told me that it was part of growing up. People come and go. But look at me now, I'm still here, weeping because of the same woman who broke my heart countless times before.
"Magiging ayos rin ang lahat, anak," she keeps on whispering pero sunod-sunod rin ang pag-iling ko sa kanya.
No, Ma. It would never be the same for her.
Hindi na, Ma. Hindi na . . .
The next day ay mabilis kong ipinasa ang iba kong trabaho sa mga kaibigan 'ko. EJ was the only one who knew aboout Lauren and I was left with no choice but to tell him about it dahil ayaw niyang tanggapin ang ibang kasong pinapa-handle ko sa kanya dahil nga may mabigat na kaso rin siyang hawak ngayon.
"Call me when you need help.
All of these were supposed to be the results of the investigation of the Quintos' case.
"I-I told them what he had done to me, to us! Pero walang naniniwala sakin. I-I asked for a check up pero hindi rin ako pinagbigyan . . ."
My jaw tightened as I recall what she had told me.
So the investigators and detectives who handled the case are accomplices.
According to the reports ay walang ibang tao sa unit maliban kay Lauren at kay Russel Quintos, the gun had Lauren's fingerprints too.
They really had a thorough job cleaning up this mess.
I know Lauren did not do it.
Words are nothing without evidence, but evidences can bend the truth with words.
"I heard it's a case that involves your ex?"
"How did you know that?"
"EJ slipped." I rolled my eyes after hearing that.
Typical EJ.
"I've seen the case," ani niya habang naglalakad palapit sa table ko nang nakapamulsa.
"Have you gone to the crime scene? You know your woman well," he said with a cocky smile.
"You know her well, so why not check the crime scene yourself?
"You're my friend, JD. But I don't know that woman, I just went here to tell you na hindi pa nalilinis ang buong crimescene," sagot niya bago siya tuluyang lumabas ng opisina ko.
I stared at the pile of files for a while before sighing and taking my coat off my chair.
I need to go and check the crime scene.
"Louie, please cancel all my appointments for today. If something urgent comes up paki pasa na lang kay Attorney Raza, okay?" tumango nama ang secretary ko bago nag-umpisang mag-cancel ng mga appointments.
