"What." You snapped. You and Ellie had been fighting as of late, you just thought it was a rough patch. Ellie still shared her bed and her home with you so you didn't think it would escalate this much.
"Get out. I can't do this anymore." Ellie shouted at you. You furrowed your brows shaking your head at her. Panic and guilt rising in your chest.
"No. Talk to me! I feel like you've become closed off to me completely, I miss you even though you're always right there." You cried. It felt like your heart was being ripped into a million pieces. And the anger and sadness in Ellie's emerald eyes told you she was serious. You hadn't lived in your old house in a year, but Joel and Tommy said it was still your should you ever need it again.
"I can't do this anymore! I can't fight with you every night and then sleep next to you like everything's fine. Go home (YN)." Ellie sniffled you could tell she was fighting back tears.
"For how long Ellie?" You asked quietly watching Ellie pace the kitchen back and forth as she chewed her fingernails.
"Forever I think."

You were exhausted. Physically and emotionally empty, all except for wave after wave of panic and despair washing over you again and again. Your house felt too big, too empty. You sat on your couch just staring at the ground trying to wrap your head around what had just happened. Ellie broke up with you. Those words clanged through you, leaving a bigger hole in your chest. You stumbled to your bedroom but one look at that bed and the idea of sleeping alone had you pulling a hoodie on and going for a walk.
Everywhere you went reminded you of her. There was no corner of Jackson left untouched by the love you and Ellie shared. No building, rooftop, alley, path, or outpost you didn't have memories of her there. It ruined you, wrecked your very soul to look around at the town you had grown up in, fallen in love in, and only feel a tidal wave of grief.
"(YN)? What are you doing walking around this late." A gruff voice came from behind you. It was pretty late, but summer was coming so the air was warm with promises. You turned around and looked at Joel.
"Hey Joel, I was just.. taking a walk." You bit back the tears, the urge to throw yourself into his arms for an ounce of comfort. Anything. It was Ellie who would have to look into his wise eyes and tell him what happened. What she did.
"Oh! Since you're here, it's finished finally." Joel smiled at you, reaching into his backpack and fished out a small wooden box. Your heart stumbled at the sight, you knew what was inside.
"Thank you Joel." You smiled feeling the tears spill over and down your face. You quickly wiped them away and could only stare at that box filled with hope and love. You carefully took it from his hands and opened it. Ellie would've loved it. A simple band forged from a bullet from Ellie's favorite gun. Engraved on the inside were your initials with a heart and then hers. The outside held a simple stone, not a diamond, just a piece of a green geode you found in the woods.
"What do you think kiddo?" Joel asked snapping you back to reality. You nodded crying and pulled him into a hug.
"She would absolutely love it." You said quietly. You stood there for a second and said your goodbyes to the old man and finally made your way back to your house. You could feel the memories haunting your every step. Everywhere you looked laughter and inside jokes echoed in your skull. You knew you couldn't stay here without her. Jackson might've been home but without her it was an empty shell haunted with what could've been.
You slept on the couch that night, the empty bed seemed like it was mocking you. When you woke up on the couch you spent a few blissful seconds forgetting you were completely alone. That realization hit you like a slap to the face. You frowned, sitting up on the couch stretching with a sigh. Today you would leave Jackson and you wouldn't come back for a long time, maybe ever. You slung the bag you had packed with weaponry and clothing over your shoulder. Carrying two other duffel bags of food and blankets to stash on your horse Atlas while you travelled.
You left your house, locking the door behind you. You made a pit stop at Tommy's, leaving the key on his porch. And one at Ellie's house, leaving a tiny wooden box on the steps. You didn't want to get too close to that door in case she opened it and told you to get lost.
When you got to the stables you noticed Shimmer wasn't in her usual stall next to Atlas, or in the barn at all. You quickly saddled and loaded up your stallion patting him gently on the neck as you did you. It would be just you and him for a while. At least he couldn't yell back at you. You lead him out of the stall, stopping to remove the sign with his name on it Ellie had made. You debated for a moment on whether or not to keep it, and then stuffed it into your bag.
"Where do you think you're going?" Maria asked from where she stood in the barn doorway.
"Can you keep a secret?" You asked back. Maria sighed and nodded approaching where you stood.
"She broke up with me. I cant stay in Jackson, everywhere I look is just a reminder of her. I can't do it." You bit back the tears clawing up your throat, you didn't want Maria to think you were weak.
"I am so sorry (YN)." Maria cooed and pulled you into her arms, a goodbye hug you supposed.
"I'm gonna miss you all so much." You sniffled, pulling away to look into the strong woman's eyes.
"Any idea where you're heading?" Maria inquired as you stepped away and hauled yourself into Atlas' saddle.
"I think Oregon sounds nice." You mused. Maria smiled and nodded in agreement.
"Stay safe out there, and if you ever need to come back for whatever reason. There'll be a home for you." Maria placed her hand idly on her chest as she watched you wave your thanks, and then head out into the woods.Ellie's P.O.V.
I wasn't sure why I went on patrol this morning. I knew I wanted to go over to (YN)'s house to talk to her more, but the work distracted me. It felt nice to be more worried about the fact I could die rather than if the girl of my dreams would take me back.
"What are you thinking about over there?" Jesse asked me as he slowed his horse down to match Shimmer and I'd pace.
"(YN) and I got into it pretty bad last night. I.. I kinda broke up with her." I sighed running a hand through my hair. It's been a day and I miss her.
"What do you mean you broke up with her." Jesse asked bewildered. I stopped Shimmer and he stopped his horse quickly beside me.
"I told her she should go home, she asked me for how long and I said 'forever I think'." I am an asshole. I shouldn't have said that to her. Not in a million years did I ever think we would break up, yet here we are. Jesse leaned over and punched me in the arm so hard I almost toppled off of Shimmer.
"You're an idiot. She loves you more than anything else, when we get back you better make it up to her." Jesse warned. That was the hardest part, I didn't think I could. I didn't think I could face her and ask her to forgive me. I couldn't stand all the fighting, I missed the way we used to be. Snuggling on the couch and dancing in the kitchen. My house felt vacant without her, dull without any warmth.
"I don't think I can. She won't-" I stopped talking as a twig snapped nearby, I looked around wildly until my eyes met a familiar pair of (EC) ones. (YN). Atlas was packed up with bags and she had a backpack slung over her shoulder.
"Go." Jesse ushered. When I opened my mouth though, she took off like a bullet. Atlas was faster than Shimmer by a lot, but that didn't stop me from racing after her. We crashed through the woods loudly, Shimmer huffing beneath me as we ran. Tree branches and bushes tore at us as we moved. (YN) wasn't pushing Atlas as much as she could, if she did they'd be out of reach by now.
I steered Shimmer to be parallel to Atlas, i furrowed my brow my eyes only on the beautiful woman next to me.
"Stop (YN)!" I shouted. I met her eyes one more time and I knew she was about to fly away and I'd never see her again. "Fuck it." I said more to myself than to her. I carefully unhooked my feet from the stirrups and swung my leg over so I was sideways on Shimmer.
"What are you doing?!" (YN) screamed slowing Atlas down just enough and I launched myself at her tackling her off of her horse. We hit the ground hard, the woods silent as we both tried to force air into our stunned lungs. I caught my breath before her and quickly jogged over to where she was laying. I straddled her to keep the woman from running away. Relief flooded me at seeing her face staring at me, those (EC) eyes filled with mixed emotions.
"Where are you going?" I gasped out. I had to know. Wherever she goes, I'd go too.
"That's what you have to say to me?! No. It's none of your business anymore! Get off of me." (YN) ordered. I shook my head, my mouth going dry her anger and her tears. When she tried to shove me off of her I grabbed her wrist pinning her to the forest floor. (YN) bared her teeth at me opening her mouth to spit more hateful words at me.
"I fucked up so bad (YN). I can't imagine my life without you. Things have been hard lately and I chickened out instead of fighting for you like I should have." I rambled, her eyes softened for a moment but then they filled back up with that anger. She is like a storm, but I would fight for her.
"You left me!" (YN) yelled grinding her teeth trying to keep her sobs contained. It shattered me completely. I loosened my grip on her wrists and she flipped our positions. I lay there limply on the ground. For a split second I hoped she would kill me rather than leave Jackson forever. (YN) grabbed my chin forcing me to stare into her eyes.
"Are you going to leave." I asked quietly. A soft sigh left her soft lips. I could feel her breath on my face as she leaned down.
"Depends. Are you going to tackle me off a horse if I say yes?" She asked seriously. I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped my lips.
"No. I just couldn't let you leave without saying I love you and I want you to stay. I want you to be my girlfriend again." I asked, nerves tumbling around in my stomach.
"No." (YN)'s eyes softened, her expression was so calm but my heart stopped beating completely.
"What?" I asked.
"I want you to be my wife, Ellie Williams."
