•Part 2 to "Don't Shoot"•

You and Ellie stayed up late into the night exchanging stories from the last two years. Laughing, crying, joking around. She thought it was just hilarious that one time while wandering a town in the middle of a rainstorm you got sucked into an old sewage drain. You thought it was hilarious that one time time she lost a snowball fight to a group of literal children. Not preteens or whatever. A group of 8 year olds beat her ass.
"How do you want to handle Joel and Tommy?" Ellie yawned leaning back in her chair. You shrugged feeling your eyelids begin to fall.
"That sounds like a later problem. We need to go to bed like now, falling asleep hunched over on the dining room table doesn't sound comfortable." You joked half heartedly. Truthfully, you had no idea how to handle the men, they obviously weren't happy you were here. But they'd never hurt Ellie anymore than they already have. "Where do you want me to sleep my gracious host?" You smiled at her. Ellie's tired eyes met yours, nervousness written all over her face.
"With me. If you want to of course I don't want to pressure you, fuck I don't even know if you still even like me." Ellie rambled. You reached across the table holding her freckled hand.
"I have loved you every single day I was gone." You sniffled. Ellie stood up and then tugged you into her arms. You two stood there for a while, just holding each other as tightly as you could. You felt Ellie's chest vibrate against you as she began to him a familiar tune.

"Talking away, I don't know what I'm to say. I'll say it anyway.
Today's another day to find you, Shying away
I'll be coming for your love, okay?
Take on me, take me on. I'll be gone
in a day or two."

"That was beautiful." You sniffled pulling away to meet Ellie's own tear filled eyes.
"Come you sap, let's get some sleep." Ellie pulled you down the hallway into her bedroom. Once you two were both under the covers she held onto you, and didn't let go at all throughout the night.

You were pulled from your dreamless sleep by someone banging on Ellie's front door. You sat up stretching, already knowing it was the Millers. Ellie was not in her bed side you anymore making you frown, but the sheets were still warm. The banging stopped and you could hear Ellie yelling, you pulled the covers over your head groaning. You just wanted a little more sleep before dealing with them. More yelling occurred and then you could hear footsteps stopping down the hallway, to heavy to be Ellie.
"Joel don't you fucking dare open that door." Ellie yelled. You sat up then with a sigh, reaching onto the nightstand where you tossed your gun last night. You were already aiming at the door when Joel threw it open, Ellie stood behind him ready to keep yelling. But she stopped when she you with the gun, the anger clear in your eyes as you stared down the larger man.
"Hello Miller." You said smoothly. Your voice low and the promise of death in your eyes.
"Put the gun down (YN)." Joel ordered with his hands in the air.
"I have spent so long thinking about what to say to you when I came back. Somehow 'I hate you' doesn't seem to have enough weight to it." You told him, taking the safety off of the gun.
"We can talk about this. Just put the gun down (YN)." Joel said again. Fear clear in his eyes.
"I believe Ellie told you repeatedly not to enter her home. Or her room. Get out." You snapped furrowing your brow at him. That rage that lived inside you was purring at the fight clear in his eyes. He wanted to fight you but your orders would clearly be in the right here.
"I'll meet you at the Tipsy Bison at noon to talk." He said to nobody in particular before leaving with his hands in the air. You were shaking when Ellie took the gun from your hands delicately. She clicked the safety on setting it back on the nightstand.
"Were you really going to kill him?" Ellie asked, her voice shook just a little. You flopped back onto the bed with a sigh.
"No. Not unless you wanted me to. I might've shot him in the leg if he tried to hurt either you or me. But no, I don't think I could kill him." You admitted. Ellie laid onto the bed close to you, silence hanging in the air around you.
"I'm angry with him. But I think if he died, I'd go to the ends of the Earth to kill his murderer myself." Ellie said, the soft threat evident. You nodded anyways, Ellie was strong and fierce. She could probably take you.
"I think if he didn't take me out of Jackson we would married by now." You said for no particular reason. You just wanted to lighten the mood.
"Definitely, when you were gone I used to think all the time about how I'd propose to you." Ellie mused. You turned on your side to face the redhead. Her green eyes were lighter than they were a little bit ago.
"You'd propose to me?" You asked, raising your brows at her. Ellie turned on her side to stare into your eyes.
"Yeah. I'd take you to that museum Joel took me to a while ago. We would wander the museum and then when we leave preferable at sunset, I'd propose to you." Ellie rambled. You grinned at her watching her cheeks turn pink.
"I guess we'll have to take a trip to the museum soon." You teased.
"Wait. You still want to marry me?" Ellie asked confused. You inhaled for a second. Of course you'd marry her. Any day at any time.
"Of course. I'd be stupid not to." You said honestly. Ellie reached out placing a hand on your face, gently stroking your cheekbone.
"Will you keep living with me? Or do you want your old house again." Ellie inquired, that blush seemed permanent on her freckled cheeks.
"If I'm honest with you, spending two years alone. I'd love nothing more than to keep living with you." You sighed moving closer to her, you could feel her quick breaths fan across your face.
"I love you too. Everyday I wondered what happened to you. Everyday I hoped would be the day you walked in through those gates. Every fucking day." Ellie confessed. Tears burned in your eyes and then you closed the distance between you. Her lips were a little chapped, she tasted like tea and she was so warm. The effect was immediate on you. The wanting her returned in full effect. When she rolled on top of you, you knew you'd be late meeting with Joel.

You and Ellie were ten minutes late to meet Joel and you weren't surprised in the slightest to see Tommy seated next to him. You slid into the booth on the opposite side of Joel leaning on your forearms over the table to stare into his eyes. Let him see what living for so long alone did to you. What he did to you.
"You're buying lunch." You stated. Ellie's eyes flickered a little bit at the tone of your voice. "Consider it part of your long road back into my good graces." You smiled a little bit at him before leaning back into your seat. You set your arm along the back of the booth behind Ellie's shoulders establishing what was still going on between you.
"Listen. I know you want to kill me-"
"I'm going to much worse than kill you Joel." You said sharply.
"Woah there. Calm down we're just here to talk, not torture each other." Tommy stepped in.
"Now you're gonna step in? Where was this moral compass two years ago." You rolled your eyes at him. Ellie's warm hand landed on your thigh in warning slightly. You understood. She wasn't mad at Tommy nearly as much as she was Joel.
"We're not going to kick you out of Jackson." Joel stated. Ellie's hand vanished, she slammed a dagger into the wood of the table. Other people staring at her now, concern in their eyes.
"I'd like to see you fucking try." She growled.  This side of Ellie was definitely new. "Good news for you actually, you don't have clean her old place for her. She's living with me." Joel tensed, exchanging looks with Tommy. You scoffed at them.
"Ellie, we're sorry for what we put you through. What we kept from you. I understand that you'll never accept that apology, you'll never trust me again. But you have to know that this is my biggest regret." Joel apologized to her. Part of you relaxed it's grip on your anger, he truly felt sorry. And you hoped it helped her heal just a bit. Ellie yanked the blade out of the table.
      "Talk."

Six months later

"Let's get out of here." Ellie stated. It's been six months since that lunch with Tommy and Joel, and you haven't spoken to either of them since. You and Ellie patrolled together every morning, talked and laughed every night. She truly was your best friend, and now sitting on her porch with your feet in her lap as you watched kids and people wander the streets.
"Get of here? Like out of Jackson?" You quirked a brow up at her. "Or like do you wanna go inside?" You winked at her. Ellie rolled her magnificent eyes at you.
"Out of Jackson. There's something I want to show you." Ellie stood up reaching for your hand.
"It's gonna be dark soon, and cold ugh." You whined. Ellie grabbed your hand pulling you to your feet and kissing you sweetly.
"I'll keep you warm when we get there." Ellie flirted. You kissed her again, pulling away the second she started wanting more.
"You'll get the rest when we get wherever we're going." You teased walking inside for your backpack and a coat. Ellie didn't hesitate to follow closely behind you, swearing under her breath.

You had your arms wrapped around Ellie, huddling as close to her as you could while she steered Shimmer through the woods. Finally you said a small cottage ahead, the lights on inside.
"Ellie..." You trailed. She didn't slow Shimmer down as she approached the beautiful home. Empty garden beds and a clean home stood before you. Ellie hopped of Shimmer and then helped you down.
"Do you like it?" Ellie inquired scratching the back of her neck.
"I love it. What is this?" You beamed at her. Ellie grinned back at you taking your hand and walking you up the porch. It looked all new, completely redone. "Did you do all this?" You asked.
"Yeah. Dina and Jesse helped of course." She blushed. You raised your brows at her, and then she opened the door. Flowers were scattered across the floor, Ellie walked behind you through the door. You gasped as you saw the large sketch hung on the wall, it was a drawing Ellie did of you and her.
"Ellie, I love it. Are we going to live here?" You breathed, excitement bubbling in your chest. But when you turned around, there was Ellie on one knee. Your heart stopped completely and tears burned in your eyes.
"(YN) (LN). You are my best friend, my partner, the love of my life. You've kicked my ass more times when we spar than I could count, you've made me laugh so hard I shot whiskey out of my nose, you are one of a kind. So would you do me the honor, of kicking my ass for the rest of our lives? And marrying me of course?" Ellie asked, laughter and tears shining in her eyes.
     "Of course."
