•You and Ellie have been together for four years and she never told you she was immune. •

You and Ellie had been together for so long you couldn't imagine anyone else besides you in these woods. Her head tilted up as she soaked in the sun. It had been a hard winter for Jackson, but you and Ellie managed. Now that spring was here she appreciated every single ray of sun she got, and Ellie never stopped being so stunning. The sun turned strands of her copper hair into the richest golds and bronze. Her freckles spattered across her cheekbones and on the bridge of her nose so perfectly placed an artist must've painted them.
"(YN)!" Ellie's raised voice snapped you out of your trance. Her teasing grin and mischievous eyes were trained on you.
"Sorry, I uh. Got a little distracted..." You cleared your throat trying to fight the blush that rose on your cheeks as you avoided your girlfriends intense gaze.
"You're so cute." Ellie teased. You rolled your eyes dramatically at her, unable to keep the smile off your lips no matter how hard you tried.
It had been a while of just wandering your usual trail with Ellie at your side. Your laughter was constant, she was in a good mood today. Sometimes when you looked at her, it felt like your heart would beat out of your chest. You loved how easy it was with her, the silence and the laughter. She knows every single secret you've never told anyone else, and she's never judged you for any of them. And you knew every one of Ellie's. You had been very honest with her on your first date fours years ago with her.

"A relationship with secrets, will not last forever. I don't mean like a surprise birthday party or a gift type of thing. Those are what my mom called good secrets. Nobody gets hurt. Bad secrets are where it's deliberately hidden again and again from your partner, those are what really breaks a couple."

Your mom had always given you advice like that. And you stood by it, every day. Even if it meant someone had to know the darkest pockets of your soul, it was worth it to be with Ellie. When your checkpoint came around, you and Ellie had gone quiet. You'd do anything to keep her safe, and her you. Jokes were saved for when you knew you were safe, now was not that time.
A groan nearby had you pulling your gun quickly. You nodded to Ellie and hopped off of your horse, tying him quickly inside the checkpoint. The faint groaning and screeching came from inside an old building, you couldn't tell what it used to be. The sign was worn to nothing.
"Jesus fuck." Ellie swore as she peered inside, while standing on a dumpster she had shoved to a nearby window, or where a window used to be.
"How many?" You asked dreading her answer.
"At least 15." Ellie whispered.
"We should come back with some others, I don't think we can- Ellie."
Your girlfriend had ignored your warning and climbed through the former window silently. You swore under your breath viciously, and followed. The drop was steeper than you had thought, thankfully Ellie knew you'd follow and caught you before you could snap an ankle. You silently nodded your thanks to her and pulled out your knife. If you fired a gun shot it would be a swarm of infected.
You and Ellie were truly a match made in heaven. Every time an infected got to close to her you had a bottle thrown across the room while she snagged a straggler, taking it down silently. There were a few more runners but your main concern was the clicker, screeching and demanding a few feet away.
Crunch
Every single thought eddies out of your skull as you met Ellie's wide fear filled eyes. You looked down the shattered bottle you had thrown a while ago, now crushed under Ellie's boots. The world went silent for a moment, you could only watch as the clicker screeched and teetered towards your girlfriend who remained painfully still. It paused, its horrific remains of a face a foot away from where Ellie crouch. It clicked twice, but the second it opened its horrible mouth you fired three bullets.
"Run!" You shouted. You snatched Ellie's hand quickly scanning for any sign of an exit. Those runners sprinting at you and your girlfriend, snarling and snapping their teeth.
"There!" Ellie pointed to a slightly window than the one you entered in. Just low enough you could haul yourselves out, with a boost. You nodded and ran for it, Ellie in tow as she fired bullets at the runners trying to slow them so you could get out. Once the window was in sight, glass still in tact, you didn't hesitate to grab brick from the ground and throwing it through the window. Shards of glass still jutted out of the frame, you couldn't think around your panic and stood on your tiptoes to stretch up and just shove the shards, snapping them away so it would be safe to get out.
"Ellie! Go!" You shouted over the gunfire. Ellie shook her head, her gun clicked. She was out of ammo.
"I'm gonna boost you up." Ellie ordered. You began to shake your head but couldn't stop her from lifting you, forcing you out of the window. Once you were out you twisted quickly reaching for Ellie with a bloodied hand. She grabbed it and you began to pull her up. Her hand jerked in yours and you could hear Ellie swearing. You looked through the window to see a runner with its rotting teeth buried in Ellie's ankle. You couldn't stop the scream that left your mouth as you pulled with all your strength and dragged Ellie out of the window.
You and Ellie just lay there for a moment, the only sound other than the raging screams of the runners below was your ragged sobs and Ellie's uneven breathing. You caught your breath before she did and pulled your gun out as you rolled on top of her, straddling her hips keeping her pinned to the ground. Your blood coated fingers were shaking as you stared down the barrel at your girlfriend's fierce green eyes.
"Don't make me do this Ellie. Please." Your voice cracked as you begged her or anyone really to save you from having to shoot her.
"Don't. I... I didn't want you to find out this way." Ellie stammered, her eyes filled with tears as she stared up at you. "I'm immune."
You laughed bitterly wiping away tears, smearing blood across your face. You just shook your head and took the safety off of the gun. Fear glimmered in Ellie's eyes, a flash of regret across her facial features twisted your heart.
"If you were immune. Then you would've told me way before now. We agreed no secrets. Please, don't make me shoot you Ellie. I don't think I can." You sniffled, fighting back the wave of sobs forcing their way up your throat. Ellie furrowed her brow for a moment and then flipped the gun out of your hand, unbalancing you and flipping your position. She had your hands pinned to the ground and forced you to look into her eyes.
     "I'm not lying." She whispered.
"Were you ever going to tell me?! Or was this the only fucking scenario where I got to find out the hard way." You snarled up at her. You saw the glimmer of hurt in those eyes you had loved, eyes you had trusted. "You know how many nights I've stayed awake because the thought of you being infected and me having to shoot you terrifies me?!" You raised your voice. Ellie seemed to recognize the challenge in your voice, you saw the spark of anger there. She was getting frustrated, and you didn't care.
"So you'd rather I be infected than have kept this from you? The only people who know are Tommy, Joel, and Maria. They told me to keep it a secret from anyone because it's be like branding the word crazy on my forehead. You think I didn't want to tell you? Of course I fucking did. But I didn't want you to think I was insane." By the end of Ellie's rant she was shaking, her voice cracking. You stared up at her and felt the guilt sink into your veins. You would rather her be here and alive than infected, of course. But you knew why this secret had to stay secret, even from you.
You didn't have to fight very hard to get your bloodied hands out of Ellie's grasp, she watched you carefully as you sat up, Ellie still on your lap. Your wrapped your arms around her middle, buried your face in her neck and cried. Ellie held you, rubbing circles on your back delicately.
"I thought I was going to have to kill you." You whispered, shaking like a leaf in your girlfriend's arms. Ellie paused her comforting motions and pulled you back so she could scan your face. She stared at you for a long while, kissed your forehead, and stood up. She held your hand as you walked through the woods back to the horses, and the entire walk from the stables to your home you shared. She held you through the night, as if she were scared you were going to vanish. But you knew Ellie Williams was your soulmate, and you wouldn't let a secret wedge itself between you and her.
