•"make a wish Ellie."•

The night air felt different than it had in the past. Filled with the promise of something new, something beautiful. That was the exact reason you and your dog had decided to go for a walk. The people at the gates were weary about letting you out this late at night but with a dazzling smile and a wink you were jogging through the woods. You were only going about a mile and a half away up to the watch tower just to sit and enjoy the summer night.
When you got there however, the usually empty fire watch tower was occupied. You and your dog had easily climbed up the stairs, your hand still holding her leash tightly. But as you neared the top you slowed down, patting the golden furred pup on the head gently. Pausing when a familiar head of red hair turned to stare at you in shock.
"How'd you find me?" Ellie sighed. You gave her a sheepish grin followed by a shrug.
"I wasn't looking for you if I'm honest. Goldy Locks here had an abundance of energy so I figured we'd go explore a bit." You explained, letting go of the leash so your eager puppy could greet Ellie properly. "The air feels different tonight." You mused plopping down next to her, your legs dangling over the edge.
"How have you been (YN)?" Ellie asked casually, but you knew there was nothing casual in the question itself. Everyone knew your dad had past about six months ago, it was only recently that you started going on patrols. It was on that first patrol back you found your dog. Everyone always said it was a sign your father was looking after you still. Ellie had been your patrol partner before that all happened. Before he got sick.
"I'm good. Getting out of that house, it helped more than I thought it would." You huffed staring out over the forest below you, the sun was now mere embers over the ridge line.
"I'm glad. Did you ever name her?" Ellie jerked her head at your dog who had flopped down on the wood with an obnoxious yawn.
"Not yet. Nothing seems right." You groaned leaning back on your palms. Ellie watched you with a small smile. That was when the first one shot across the sky. A strike of beaming light blooming as it flew across the night sky. You lurched to your feet yanking Ellie to hers.
"What is it?" Her emerald eyes swam with worry.
"A shooting star! It was incredible, I've never seen one before!" Your grin was so wide it almost hurt. A light laugh escaped Ellie's throat.
"I missed you so much." Ellie sighed affectionately, wrapping you in her arms and holding you tight against her. You hugged her back as tight as you could. She was everything to you, not a day went by when you holed yourself away that you didn't think of her. A second bolt of light flew across the midnight sky and you jerked out of Ellie's arms.
"Ellie I think this is meteor shower or whatever they're called." Your eyes were wide as you remained tucked into Ellie's side. The both of you staring out across that forest, holding your breath as you waited that next sacred star to descend.
It was like the sky had erupted with magic. So many you couldn't take your eyes off of the sky, the lights filled the sky with blinking light as they danced across the other stars that remained high above your heads. You didn't realize you were crying until Ellie wiped your tears away with her calloused fingers. You gave her a wobbly smile to show her you were okay, turning back to the waves of stars blazing.
"Make a wish Ellie." You sniffled, Ellie placed a kiss on top of your head.
"What more could I wish for." Ellie mumbled. You laughed pulling out of her arms so you could look her in her beautiful eyes. So many memories of you just trapped in them, so many emotions welling in them right now.
"You have to make a wish!" You whined.
"Okay okay, I wish I could kiss you." Ellie admitted. You felt your cheeks flush and pray it was dark enough to hide them.
"That ones on the house." You winked, Ellie had her arms around your waist while your hands flew to her face as she kissed you. Somehow, even with what you had just witnessed that still filled the sky around you, Ellie's kiss was the most magical thing you'd ever experienced. She tasted like adventure and slightly like whatever she ate for dinner.
"So I get to make another wish?" Ellie inquired.
"Sure, nothing to crazy." You warned making her tip her head back in the starlight and laugh.

"I wish you'd name that damn dog."
