WARNING: Graphic Descriptions and blood

Your arms were wrapped loosely around Ellie's middle as Shimmer carried you through the woods. Jesse and Dina sharing Jesse's horse as well. The path before you was well worn and clear, birds chirped high above, the sun warmed your face. You rested your head on Ellie's back for a moment, feeling her breathing through her chest. Peaceful, you thought. Just you and your best friends in the world, talking quietly and giggling at stupid jokes. No matter how much you wished for the red head who sat in front of you to be more, you didn't want to ruin the friendship you had. All the giggling and all the jokes halted at the snap of a twig and the silence of the forest surrounding the four of you.
"Infected?" You breathed whipping out your gun, scanning the vacant trees. Waiting for a clicker or some other monster to stumble towards you. But what actually stepped forward was much worse. People, healthy living people.
"Help us, please!" One of the women gasped. There were eight in total. Two women six men. You did not lower your gun or sigh in relief. Jackson did not like outsiders without making sure they could trust them first. You glanced up at Ellie, her green eyes trained on the man who stepped forward. Your glance away was fatal. They struck as a team.

Your breath rasped out of you, the only sound that occupied the air. You, Ellie, Jesse, and Dina were sent out on one of the longer routes today. The four of you would stay overnight at a checkpoint and return to Jackson the next day.
Your gut feeling about the right outsiders was right. They were bad, they wanted to ruin Jackson for whatever reason. The group separated you almost immediately after making their false pleas for help and safety. The group paired off, each group of two separated each of you. One minute you were behind Ellie on Shimmer, the next you were dragged off. Ellie's swears echoing off the trees.
Stars dances behind your eyelids as two of the men dragged you away. Too dazed to move or protest you lay limp in their tight grip. When they lunged forward and yanked you off Shimmer your head hit the ground with a sickening sound. Your skull felt like it was still vibrating with the impact. But you blinked away the tears stinging in your eyes and begged your brain to think.
Not here.
Not like this.
Not here.
Not like this.
Ellie doesn't know... I can't die without telling her. I can't die. Not here. Not like this.
Your rapid thoughts fired through you. You weren't going to die, not without putting up one hell of a fight. The men set you down once they carried you far enough away. Tying your hands quickly, you mentally swore at the inconvenience, and they set you sitting up against a tree. One of the men flicked out a switchblade placing the end of the blade under your chin, lifting it so you'd have to stare into his beady eyes.
"Now. What exactly will we do with you? Of course you're going to take us to Jackson. But what are we going to do with you now?" The man pondered to himself. You curled your lip at him in disgust. Opening your mouth to suggest something obscene he could do with that knife instead of holding it at your throat.
"She's feisty. I wonder if we'll be able to keep her under control." The other man hissed with sarcasm. You looked up at him as he stood above you, a sneer finding it's place on your face.
"Untie me and we'll find out." You spat. They chuckled at that, the man with the knife trailed the tip of the blade down the center of your throat.
"I wonder what the red head would do, once we all meet up again, if you were nowhere to be found." He sucked on his teeth. "Or if when we got there your sharp tongue was cut out of your mouth." He snapped.
"Ellie was it? Ah. I think she'd at least try to murder us if a single hair on your pretty little head was out of place. But I can't be sure, won't it be fun to find out?" The other man grinned evilly down at you. He slipped his backpack off, searching for something at the bottom. Your mouth went dry as he pulled out a small gun. Not enough to kill you but enough to make it so you couldn't walk.
"Now tell us (YN)... which leg do you use the least?" Knife man smiled pressing the blade against your jugular, you could feel the sting as a few beads of blood spilled down to your collar bone.
"Left." You answered. They both laughed at that and with their heads tipped back in amusement you struck. Lifting your foot and kicking the man with the knife away from you as hard as you could. You jumped to your feet making a swift run in whatever direction was farthest away from them. Your escape was stopped by the sensation of your left leg being set ablaze. You hit the ground hard, twisting to brace yourself on your shoulder so you would break your nose. The crowing laughter of the two men made tears well in your eyes. You were hauled to your feet by your hair, a yelp left your lips against your will. You could feel the blood soaking your jeans as the knife man lifted you from the ground.
"You thought you could escape?" They laughed. Tears slid down your cheeks, you'd rather die here than lead them back to Jackson. Even if it meant you'd never get the chance to tell Ellie how much you truly loved her. The barrel of the gun pressed against your rib cage. You closed your eyes, feeling the sun on your face, drinking in the warm summer air, the scent of blooming wildflowers and recent rain, it'd be the last thing you'd experience anyways. Your moment of peace was interrupted however, by the sound of tendons ripping open and the gurgling of someone choking on blood.
"Don't touch her." Ellie seethed as the man loosened his grip on you, she caught you before you could tumble to the ground with him. The red head scooped up the gun and shot the other man without even thinking about it.
"I love you." You gasped out when you finally met her emerald gaze, so full of worry and relief you were alive. Also rage at these men who hurt you.
"What?" Ellie blinked. You swallowed hard.
"I couldn't die without telling you. I tried to run, just so I could tell you before-" Ellie cut you off with a swift kiss on the lips. Her chapped lips collided with yours and your day dreams didnt do it justice. She pulled away just as swift as she kissed you.
"I love you too. Jesse is getting Dina and we're going to the checkpoint, it's almost sunset and we can't risk navigating these woods in the dark." Ellie explained. You nodded in agreement.
Half limping half being carried, you and Ellie made it to where Dina and Jesse had found Shimmer and Jesses horse. Ellie had stopped once on the way to rip off the sleeve to her hoodie and tying it as tightly as she could around your thigh. Jesse and Dina both had bruises and scrapes of their own, but they paled at the blood soaking your jeans. Ellie pulled you in front of her in the saddle, moving Shimmer as fast as she could without hurting you. There were no more jokes or laughter. Just the silence of the woods and your raspy breathing as the checkpoint came into view. You could've cried at the sight of the fire watch tower. The stairs leading upwards were a daunting task, you couldn't walk up them.
"Ellie... I don't think I can..." you trailed off as she helped you off of Shimmer. Before you could continue your protest, Ellie chucked her back pack over to Jesse and Dina then turned around bending her knees.
"Get on, I'll carry you." She ordered. (Hold on tight spider monkey) The stairs were too narrow to be carried up there any other way. You hesitated, not wanting to be burden.
"We're not leaving you down here so you better just do it." Jesse joked lightly. Dina placed a warm hand on your shoulder giving you an understanding smile.
"Okay okay. If it's too much let me know I'm sure I can use the railing to keep myself up." You chewed on the inside of your cheek nervously. Ellie stood up, stepping close to you. She tucked a stray piece of your hair behind your ear, you could see her fingers shaking.
"You're hurt. You need to be safe, let me do this." Ellie insisted quietly, the rage in her voice as she took in your leg. It hurt like a bitch, the adrenaline wearing of quickly. Every ounce of weight on it made your muscles burn. So you obliged, letting Ellie bend down. Once you were on her back, her arms hooked under your knees  to keep you in place, Ellie began the ascent.
"Thank you Ellie." You breathed, your arms looped around her neck as she carried you up and up. How she wasn't terrified you had no idea.
"I thought you were dead. When that gunshot went off, I... it seems stupid to say but I am glad they only hit your leg." Ellie explained. You could see her ears turn pink in embarrassment and smiled to yourself at the sight.
"That makes one of us. I can't wait to be back home." You huffed a laugh, trying to ignore the fact that you'd cut your leg off if it meant you wouldn't have to feel the burning in your thigh.
"Home. We'll be there tomorrow and get you some proper care." Ellie sighed, stepping on the porch that wrapped around the watch tower. "I'll set you down here so I can open the door." Ellie warned, sliding you off her back and leaning you against the wooden railing. You watched as Ellie picked the lock and shoved the creaky door open, looking down to see Jesse and Dina putting the horses in the nearby storage shelter so they'd be safe and hidden.
"Hey Ellie. I need you to know that if what you said.. back there. If it was just a like in the moment thing. That's okay." You sighed, tearing your eyes from the back of her head to stare at the setting sun. The sky was turning shades of lilac and light blues as the moon began its ascent, but the final gold rays of light still flowed across the forest before you.
"Were you... just in the moment?" Ellie asked, turning to face you. You chewed on your lip, still not looking at her.
"No. I was going to tell you on this trip anyways, I guess almost dying is one hell of a motivator." You shrugged. Ellie's footsteps were light on the wooden floors beneath you, she gently gripped your chin turning you to face her. Her eyes were unavoidable, so full of emotions you couldn't read fast enough.
"Good. Not good that you almost died, but good that you were going to tell me. Because I sure as fuck meant it." Ellie rambled, her eyes flicking to your lips. "I always thought our first kiss would be more romantic, not like that kiss in the woods." She trailed, lifting her hand to hold your cheek. You leaned into the touch, the burning in your leg forgotten for just a moment.
"What's more romantic than a beautiful view of a sunset above a valley of trees after almost dying?" You joked. Ellie grinned down at you, lifting your chin, and kissing you soundly. Her touch was gentle, her hand never leaving your face. Those chapped lips were damn near molded just for your own. You only pulled apart because Jesse and Dina started whooping and clapping as they approached the top the stairs.
"Finally. If I had to listen to you to talk about how in love you are with each other for another minute I would combust." Jesse grinned. You and Ellie smiled back at them entering the small watch tower. It would be crowded for sure, but safe. Three of you laying on the floor after Ellie cleaned and bandaged your leg, while someone was always on watch.
Ellie insisted on taking your watch since you were hurt. You were sleeping soundly with one of Ellie's arms laying loosely around your middle. But you were up when Dina shook her awake gently so she could take your watch. When Dina laid down with Jesse and you could hear her breathing even out, you wrapped a blanket around you and silently stepped around them to get to the door. Ellie stood on the porch, gun in hand and a flashlight at the ready. The moonlight draped her in silver light.
"Go back to bed Ellie." You whispered as the door creaked open.  The ginger whipped around, shock lighting her face as she took you in.
"You literally got shot a few hours ago and you want to take watch? I think the fuck not." Ellie scolded. You giggled quietly opening the blanket up her as you stood by her side. Ellie grumbled to herself before wrapping the side of the soft blanket around her shoulders.
"It's only fair that if you are taking my watch I should at least accompany you." You teased. Ellie rolled her eyes. Slipping an arm around your waist to hold you up so you would be putting so much weight on your leg.
"I suppose it is only fair." Ellie grinned mischievously, turning to face you so close your noses were almost touching. "I know you won't go back to sleep anyways so might as well pass the time." She whispered. You smirked back at her.
"What exactly did you have in mind?"
"Just kissing and some talking maybe." Ellie shrugged. You covered your mouth to stop your laughter from escaping.
"Talking? What do you want to know, who I have a crush on?" You giggled. Ellie scoffed at the remark, pressing a quick kiss to your forehead before pulling you closer.
"I think I already know that, at least I hope so. Don't tell me there's someone else?" Ellie fake gasped. You leaned your head on her shoulder, the grin remaining on your face.
"Nah, it's always been you. Only you."

AN: Sorry for the late update! I've been sick and ugh. So this one was extra long just to make up for it! Hope you enjoyed!
