Nine...
He dragged her to the guest bed room, struggled to tuck her in then went to clean up the mess in the kitchen.
He washed his hands after he disposed the broken plate, just as he was about to turn off the tap. He heard Efe scream, leaving the tap on he ran to her. He bust into the dark room, only it wasn't dark anymore. A red and white smokey girl, held Efe in her arms looking worried as Efe thrashed around. Ayo stood dumbfounded at the door until she looked at him and whispered "help her... She needs to wake up" She looked back at Efe who was already crying in her sleep. Ayo jumped on the bed taking Efe from the girl. She looked exactly like Efe but alot younger. He shook her.
"Efe!! Efe!!" He shouted "Efe!!" She was suffocating "EFE!!!" He shouted then hit her chest with all the energy he could muster. For a while, she stopped moving... The little Efe backed away from the bed but disappeared in the moment Efe gasped for air. She awoke with a jolt. Efe coughed then gasped for air again, she repeated this until she could breath well. Her body shook as Ayo held her in his arms. He awkwardly rubbed her back slowly.
"Its okay... Its okay..." He assured, like his mother usually did for him. "Its okay... You're okay now..." He did that until she was sleepy again, he placed her head on the pillow to move away but she held onto him tight.
"Please don't go... Please" she begged in a shaky voice which didn't seem like her at all. He had forgiven her for the outside incident but he still wanted her to apologize, anyway, he crawled into the bed and fell asleep with her hand in his. It was a peaceful night for her but Ayo couldn't stop thinking about what he saw when he walked into the room. Who was the girl he saw in the room? And why did she look so much like Efe? Did Efe have a little sister? She never said anything about having a little sister. He would have to ask her about this in the morning, right now was the time to sleep. He yawned, gripping Efe's hand.
12:30 am, the digital clock on the bed side table showed.
11:13 am
The next morning...Efe's eyes shot open abruptly, remembering little events of the night before. She saw a chiseled chest rising and falling under her head, she turned to look up. Ayo was sleeping soundly, his mouth hung open slightly as he snored softly. She resisted the urge to push his oily pointed nose. He looked worn out.
A thought popped into her mind, she slowly creeped out of the bed to pee, then she went to the kitchen. Efe sliced up onions, tomatoes and pepper she found in his fridge to make egg sauce. She hadn't cooked in a while so she just poured some of the white thing in a jar into the food. When that was done, she boiled hot water threw four Lipton bags in then carried everything in a tray to meet Ayo, along with a tin Peak milk and Cubes of Sugar.
Efe poked his head with a cute bread knife "Wake up sleepy sleepy" she dropped the tray. A slice of bread fell out so she threw it back into the plate and proceeded to wake Ayo up. Once he was up, she pointed at the food on the tray. Bright light was already pouring in through the window."What time is it?" He checked the clock beside him. 2:08 pm it read.
"I made you breakfast.. Well I guess lunch now" she smiled.
"Wow.. Thank you I guess" he took some egg sauce in a spoon and threw it into his mouth with the sandy bread. As soon as the sauce touched this mouth, he spat it back out into the plate "Ki olorun da, kini eleyi?"
Efe's face turned into one of concern.
Translate:
"God forbid, What is this?""Is something wrong?" She asked handing him the cup of Lipton. He drank then spat it back out again, furiously fanning his tongue.
"Pa mi!!" He yelled.
The water was scorching hot and apparently she had poured 'Omo' into her sauce instead of salt.No wonder it was bubbling like that, she thought.
After more than ten minutes of throwing up, Ayo went into the kitchen with Efe and they silently ate cake and 'Kunu' instead."I'm sorry" Efe spoke up. "The breakfast in bed was supposed to be my apology to you for screaming at you last night but I managed to fuck that up too. I'm sorry" she stared down at her hands "I'll understand if you don't want to help me anymore. In fact I'll repay you, I have money... But I will keep your clothes because mine is well you know and..." Ayo laughed. Her head shot up.
"You're cute when you murmur" he said before he could stop himself, when he noticed this, he awkwardly cleared his throat. "I mean... You're offering to give me the money you stole from your witch doctor?" Efe lowered her head in shame. She forgot all about Ngozi. 'They would have found her by now and alerted her mom... Fake mom.' She needed to get out of here. She thought 'Ayo is not safe as long as I'm around him.'
"Don't worry, I no dey vex" he continued when she didn't reply him " You can stay here. Besides I get bored a lot, I'll need the company... Maybe I'll teach you how to cook too" That broke the tension in the room as they both laughed."I really don't think staying will be a great idea, people are after me" Her laughter died down. Efe imagined Ayo getting hurt because of her and it caused her pain. She couldn't explain why.
"Just stay joor... Nobody will expect you to be in a place like this" He gestured to his fancy house. "And if anyone comes looking, we'll just travel somewhere else" He assured. For some unknown reason, he wasn't able to let her just go like that, he wanted to do all he could to help her.
"Thank you" she smiled "I fit use small help to dey control myself " She downed the remaining Kunu in one gulp and so did he.
"By the way, who was the girl from last night?" He remembered
"Wait.. What girl?" Her eyes widened.
