When the soul crushing pain moved downwards from his head, the first thing that it effected was his eyes which ached enough for him to try and touch it but he wasn’t able to use his limbs as he wished. Soon his ears, nose, mouth followed then it reached his spine.

Blood curling scream erupted from his mouth only to be replaced by violent bubbles and screeching sound. He crouched forward this time and he sensed an excruciating pain as if someone was stabbing him with sharp knife on his back from the space below his shoulder blades. He could feel his flesh being torn apart by the force.

Despite the pain, he opened his eyes and every thing around him was much clear than before, he could taste iron in the water all around him. He also noticed Daisy had gone to the corner and was staying far away from him and he could sense the fear and panic from her. He looked at the arm which had turned ashy blueish white with scales and another scream bubbled out of his mouth when his fingers stretched which further tore off his human skin.

Blueish white skin took over his fingers and as if being peeled over, all his human coloured skin fell off, gushing out faint trail of blood. The pool had turned into light reddish in colour as the people above watched from the sideline in panic. “Dr. Mills, this is happening way too fast than it happened with other subjects. I think we have to let Daisy out from there or else River might attack her”, said a guy who looked in his late fifties.

Veronica turned to the man as she considered his opinion, “No, let’s see if he surprises us once more. If he does kill the dolphin then he will be put into rogue category like others and if he still has his human emotions intact then we wouldn’t have wasted twenty years on him”, she said then returned her eyes back to the red circle in the water.

The woman beside the man pulled on his white coat and looked at him through concerned emotions. The man mirrored her emotions and turned back to Veronica, “Dr. Mills, this is dangerous. What if he resorts to suicide like other creatures? He surely has up our research all these years, it would really be a waste”, he tried convincing the woman to allow them to act rather than just witnessing same thing all over again.

Veronica glared at the man, “Dr. Matthews, don’t forget I am head of this research and the boy has my last name, I am his legal guardian. I have full trust in him, he will prevail and he won’t succumb to becoming a beast. We have observed and trained him for years. Have some faith in him”, she lectured then continued, “At least let us wait and see what he transforms into. Considering his background, I have a hunch but we can not be sure with all the failed subjects at our hands”, she gritted those words with disappointment.

The man and his wife who fostered River all these years, shut their mouth and just complied with this experiment. Previous creatures had to continuously be injected with the special formula until they finally transformed or deformed. Those who transformed into hybrid creatures had lost their human conscience and turned rabid, however after their first kill they kept going in and out of such state, ultimately choosing to die either by self harm or depression.

They named such state as Mind morphing stage, the state of mind jumping in and out of human conscience where guilt, fear, rationality comes in at some point then later all those emotions blurs into live, hunt, eat and mate primal instincts.

These hybrids when they can’t cope with such fluctuations, decides to self destruct. Only two out of seven human experiments are still alive, Veronica had omitted that part.

Three hybrids deformed and became useless which were later terminated while one had self destruct with the other faced horrifying fate and the remaining two had been kept alive through sedation and isolation from any other living organisms.
