River slowly came to his senses and astonishingly, neither his head nor his body ached from being unconscious. He thought that was odd because usually even after a short nap, his body ached every where like someone punched or kicked him while he was asleep but at this moment, not only there was no pain, In fact he felt refreshed. As he started conversing with himself before he opened his eyes, first sense that started functioning was his ears and he didn’t hear any beeping sound or felt any presence beside him, ‘Am I not in hospital? I swear the blood that poured down my nose could feel a blood donation bag’, he thought then all his other senses started regaining their functions.
He couldn’t smell any disinfectant and every thing was really quiet as if no soul existed anywhere near him. River’s eyes started twitching and his closed eye lids slowly lifted up, he was trying to focus his blurry vision for a while then everything became clear. The green eyes blinked rapidly then his pale and slender fingers and toes started moving, getting the feel.
River lazily stretched to right then left and yawned enthusiastically as he sat upright. However, his yawn got caught up in his throat and he started coughing to let it out. River patted his chest to ease it then with his widened eyes he took in the surroundings. There wasn’t much to take in, every wall was white in colour, there was only one furniture where he just woke up and lastly, there was a wide and long glass window that was suspended to the right side from where he sat and there was no door!
He jolted right out of bed and staggered a bit because of numb footing. The green eyed boy then stood upright in the middle, not wanting to walk straight into the window. He was being cautious because he had no clue as to where he was and what was going on. He tried calming down but his mind was playing all sort of scenarios in his head.
Cabin in the woods, ascending Jupiter, Resident evil and so on. Before he could once again collapse from shock, he steadied his thoughts but his breathing became haggard. The boy searched his body for phone but he didn’t have it on him. River’s eyes were teary after having difficulty in breathing and being overwhelmed. He only then noticed that he wasn’t wearing his clothes but a white medical gown with red dots for pattern.
His heart jolted when there was a static noise coming from the corner of the room then he heard a voice, “Good morning, Subject M1. You have been asleep for whole twenty four hours. Welcome to your old home ROMCO, Research Of Marine Creatures Organisation. We hope you will continue to be our ray of light further in our research and also be cooperative with us. Please step forward and place your right palm on the window screen ahead of you”, said the mechanical voice of a woman.
River was dumbfounded with whatever the voice said, “subject M1? Twenty four hours? ROMCO? Old home?! What nonsense is this? You can’t keep me here against my will! I will sue your shady organisation! Let me go this instance! I have not taken part in any research bullshit and have no plan on taking part in any in the future”, he said as calmly as he could but his voice might have gone up and down in panic.
“We had all rights to you since you were an infant, we are basically your guardians. Your foster parents were hired by our organisation to take care of you until you matured while they were funded by us for this research. Subject M1, please cooperate with us and we will answer your questions as we go forward. As this moment, your life is in a critical state and it requires further examination. We are only trying to help you. Of course, if you don’t co-operate, we will be forced to act accordingly which is not what we want”, said the voice.
River’s mind was in a jumble, as he registered what the voice just said to him. ‘He had been a project since he was an infant and his foster parents were doing their research on him?!’ His calves trembled and he dropped down on his knees, hyperventilating. His visions became blurry and his head started spinning or perhaps it was the room or just him. Whatever the case, he was losing his conscious again but he fought to keep it in check through his laboured breathing.
