Chapter 31- Promises were made

The Creature moved forward to help River stay put but the boy angrily snapped his fangs at the Siren who stopped his nearing hands and slowly curled his fingers then retrieved them.

River still managed to act strong while in reality his body was trembling from energy loss. “You can speak human language, why are you doing this?”, he asked as he turned his head to point at his captured family. The creature’s black eyelid slid and revealed bright purple pupils.

“I am Destan of Meridia. I apologize for being crude with my approach but it was the only way to find you”, Destan said then he looked at the captured Meras, “As you can see no harm is done to your friends during the battle. I was merely testing all of you to find out the one I were looking for. Three of your friends seem to have similar smell and essence like you. Anyways, now all that is done with. I finally found you! It’s time we wait for my brother and return to Meridia”, he said as if huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

However, the smile on his face froze when he saw two marks on River’s neck. He was not so gentle when he reached out and gripped River’s shoulders. Destan looked pissed as he spat, “Who did this to you?”, River slapped his hands away and slowly moved back then glared at the guy.

“Don’t touch me! What nonsense are you spouting? What is Meridia? Why are you looking for me? What are all of you?”, River asked in anger when he saw the guy act like how Wayde did when they first met. Destan curled his fingers and stopped himself from getting angry, he took a deep breath.

“Meridia is my home, it’s one of the two Kingdom in new World far away from humans. I am not speaking human language but you are hearing me speak the language you understand. It’s because of the raised vibrations in New world which enables all those born there to have such ability. I.. my brother and I were looking for you for Two years. We had searched all parts of this world but we never found you then we made a temporary base in this part of the sea for a year now”, he explained slowly.

Destan watched River’s still on guard with angry expression and felt his own anger emerge. All these years of continuous search for the boy and this is how he was looked at. Then his eyes slid back to the marks on the boy’s neck and his anger just sky rocketed. But he didn’t want to destroy the bridge between them when it hadn’t even been built yet, so he squashed his rage.

“Your mother is from the kingdom of Tridia, last kingdom out of the two in the new world. Many years ago She had wanted to cross the border to human world which lies through our kingdom and had made a promise to my parents. They had made an offer for her to give her first born to the first born of their own as chosen mate and only after that they allowed her to cross the border. She returned with an outsider, A Meras of human world and they were already mated. Your grand parents didn’t approve as your father wasn’t from the New world but your mother threatened to leave with your father and live in human world”, he sighed then looked at River in the eyes.

“She had made him, her chosen mate and your grandparents didn’t want her to live on this side. So, they agreed to let your father remain in the New world. But he was wild and different from others, he didn’t fit in. They kept him busy until you were born but after a year, he took you away without bringing your mother. She finally realised he wasn’t interested in staying with her, he only mated with her for offspring. Somehow he escaped from the guarded borders and brought you this side. Despite everyone’s protests to wait until searching group was formed, your mother came looking for you on her own. Once she left, the border malfunctioned and no one could leave”, Destan looked lost in memory.

“Soldiers from both kingdom finally managed to come through the barriers separating the two worlds but something strange followed them. They were killed by that beast, we only know of that because only one person returned after months but she was heavily wounded and she only woke up three years ago and screamed for her child”, he said as a small smile formed on his lips as he looked at River.

River felt his heart explode with unknown feeling. He looked at the guy in front of him to sense any lies or treachery and found nothing but frustration, hope and anger. “My mother was killed by the beast, I saw it myself! I.. I saw it..”, his voice became soft as he felt pain and hope in his heart.

“She is alive and healthy. Somehow she managed to return All on her own but she was bloodied and bruised. Before she went into coma, she said your name, Rhael  and said monster killed everyone then passed out. When she finally woke up three years ago, she explained what happened and the two Kingdom decided to re open the barrier only for few warriors. My brother and I urged to come with them and they allowed us to cross the barrier. We learned human ways for a year then travelled to other places through the sea. We were given three years in total to find you and return and the time limit ends in couple of months”, he explained.

“How did you find me now?”, River softly asked, he was overwhelmed with emotions and now he didn’t know what to do but go with the flow. “Two days ago, some warriors stationed here felt surge of power similar to your mother and they reported it to us. We started searching the area once more. Only three warriors had stayed here while me and my brother along with others looked for you in the human world. We had returned to this city as the days to return home was approaching and we got lucky. My brother went further away by himself, he made a bet that he alone can find you, he’s like that”, Destan Chuckled.

River saw the guy’s smile but didn’t care for anything he had said because in his mind River felt like the memories of his mother and father, playing with him very happily was true and everything else was lie. ‘How could my father kidnap me? There is no way that was true, right?’, he thought. Then he remembered how his father had gotten into the whirlpool and seeing how these people could create it in spot, maybe his father was assassinated?

That was plausible theory, his parents must have ran away after not being able to live together and they were burden by that promise! Yes, that could be it! He thought. Yet again he remembered that he hadn’t seen his mother be sad when his father was swallowed into the whirlpool, she had just seen a bit upset but it was gone in seconds. Could she have created it herself? Was this white Creature telling the truth? Because if they were running away why would she show him the paradise? She was taking him back!

River’s head started spinning from all the maybes and also because he had used too much energy. Destan tried reaching out to keep him steady but River screamed, “Get away from me! Stop filling my head with lies! They were happy! My parents were happy! You are lying! You and your—“, his speech slurred and his vision blurred then darkness engulfed him.

Destan quickly caught the boy and held him tightly. He saw two Meras fighting his warriors to get to him and he narrowed his eyes. He was wearing purple crystal necklace on his neck, he reached his finger to the middle black crystal and pressed it. Wayde and the gang felt buzzing on their hand where the black bracelet was and soon the buzzing escalated.

Electricity shot through their body and they all groaned in pain. Destan let that continue for few minutes then stopped. He swam towards the four blue Meras and asked, “What is your relationship with Rhael?”, his question was directed at the three Sirens Erina, Olivia and Riley because they had a hint of River’s essence in them then he noticed it had a mix of two other Meras, one being the bulky and wild looking guy while the other wasn’t present in front of him.

“What Magic is this? Why do you three have four different essence in you? Rhael, this creature, one more and the last one is more similar to an animal?”, he asked before they answered the first question. They all had heard the conversation the Beluga looking creature had with River and they were glad the boy’s mother was alive but they were not happy learning about the promise.

“We are his family as you can tell. He made us through science, if you know what that is”, Erina answered and got pushed by a warrior for being rude. Destan narrowed his eyes but couldn’t help knowing she was right about being part Rhael but through science? Human magic? He and his brother Zale had lived in human world for a year while they were in and out of water during that time, both of them had gathered enough information about human ways of life.

There were many things to report back to his parents about the technology and gadgets humans had created, also about the difference in flow of time between New world and this world. “I do know of this outdated form of magic humans use but how could such hopeless thing create a different species? There are many cons of such mixed creation”, he answered and Olivia thought if he wasn’t keeping them hostage there was a debate she could have a go at with the guy.

They saw as a warrior Siren whispered something to Destan and the boy tensed for a while and tightly held River but sighed and said, “If that is the case bring all these Meras to the base. I cannot make hasty with decisions on my own regarding this science family of Rhael but him”, he pointed to Wayde, “He has similar characteristics to Rhael’s treacherous father who had caused all this grief to our kingdoms. Tie him up with more crystals, I will let Zale to deal with him”, he ordered and went away, carrying River.

Every time the four of them tried fighting, they were zapped again and again. Erina, Olivia and Riley were taken into a luxurious looking cave where River and the Beluga guy were present while Wayde was taken to another part of the cave.

“How have all of you lived here without being seen by other Sirens?”, Olivia asked the boy who was hovering his hands above River from top to bottom. “Be quiet Science creature”, said one of the warrior standing on guard around the three of them. Olivia snapped her mouth shut, scared of being zapped. Erina put a hand around her in comfort and she leaned in on the contact.

Riley clenched his jaw as he watched River laying on the rock while the guy used his hands as some sort of Reiki master. He was also worried about what they might do to Wayde. “He won’t forgive anyone of you if you harm anyone of us, including the guy you took away from us”, Riley spoke loudly to the guy.

Destan’s hands stopped above River’s head and he snapped his head towards Riley and glared at him. His eyes were full of anger and despise. Destan pushed himself up and glided towards Riley, “You dare acting smart with me , foul blood! You should be glad I’m not torturing you with that low breed for both of you have fouled Rhael! He is not yours or his but mine! He was promised to me before even either of us were born!”, Destan snapped getting all up in Riley’s face.

Riley didn’t back down from being yelled at but he was zapped by the warrior and he gritted his teeth and looked down. Destan didn’t know what to do with anyone of them, he didn’t want to anger Rhael but he just had to wait for his brother who could do what he wanted and he knew Zale wouldn’t think twice before doing anything.

Think of the devil, Zale came inside the cave and everyone’s eyes turned to new arrival...s? They all looked confused when one Beluga looking guy who looked extremely similar to Destan swam inside with another creature who looked worn out. “Why are there so many people with Rhael’s essence all over the place”, Zale asked as he looked at the three Sirens with black bracelet on their hands.
