Chapter 6
Today was Meredith's first appointment with PT. She would need to sit up by herself and find her balance.
"Mer" Derek whispered, trying to Wake Meredith up
"Hmm.." She groaned
"We need to get up and get you changed. It's your first PT appointment today"
"I.. changed?" Meredith said but Derek noticed the amount of fear in her voice
"I'll help you, Mer. Don't worry"
"I.. thank you Der" Meredith whispered
Derek got out of the bed and walked over to the closet and got out a fresh shirt, some sweatpants and fresh underwear. Derek walked back to Meredith and started undressing her lower body. He noticed her facial expressions, she was getting frustrated with her legs. The only thing Derek wanted to do was give her back the ability to feel her legs, to be able to walk, run and jump.
"Mer?"
"I hate this, Derek"
"Come on, let's change your shirt now. Do you want me to help?"
"Can you just help me leaning forward? My back is still sore"
"How bad, on a scale from 1-10?" Derek asked her
"6.. It's not too bad, it's.. okay"
"Mer, you don't have to pretend around me, you can freak out, you can break down" Derek said before kissing her forehead.
...
"Good Morning, Meredith" Lucy, Meredith's physical therapist said when entering the room
"Morning" Meredith muttered
"Okay, Meredith. Fist you're gonna need answering some questions before we start with actual exercices"
Meredith nodded
"So, did you already order a personalized wheelchair?" Lucy asked them with her notebook and pen in her hand
"Yes.. yesterday" Meredith said
"Our friend doctor Callie Torres helped us out a little. We went for a aluminium chair with middle high backrest-"
"Did you choose a middle high backrest because of her back pain?"
"Yes, doctor Torres said that would work out the best."
Lucy nodded
"It has some dark blue accents, but nothing too flashy" Derek finished as he watched Meredith and carefully squeezed her hand.
"So, Meredith.. Did you do any workouts before the accident?"
"No.. not at all" Meredith told her
"We're gonna work on upper body strength. Your arms will get a hard time because you'll need to push yourself, meanwhile we're gonna keep working on your legs too. I know you can't feel them at all but I really want to at least try to get you standing again"
"You think that's a goal I could reach?" Meredith askes, a little shy and scared of getting the answer
"Well of course we'll need to wait for the results once the swelling on your spine is down, then we'll be able to talk about your bladder. But this is an incomplete SCI. I have good hopes you'll be able to stand. Maybe not long, maybe with braces but I want to get you at least to a point of standing.
Meredith nodded
"Have you been sitting up by yourself?"
Meredith shook her head
"She's been in a lot of discomfort and the chief didn't want to risk anything with her stitches" Derek told her
"Okay well then I want to try and let her sit up by herself but not in the bed, I wanna try on a chair."
Derek carefully scooped up his wife and placed her in the chair that has been standing in the room. Lucy walked over to Meredith and held her back and shoulder. Derek held her too as he saw her struggling to find her balance.
"Okay, Meredith. I know this is hard, I know this is scary and this will feel a lot more difficult than ever before but you need to do your best, okay?" Lucy asked
Meredith nodded as Lucy and Derek carefully let go. Meredith was struggling but she was doing this on her own, this was going good.
"Okay Meredith, you can lean back. So because we're talking about your T10 we'll need to focus on the right technique of sitting but we'll work on that once your own chair has arrived. Derek, can you place her back on the bed so I can workout her legs?"
Derek scooped her back up and gently placed her in the bed before fixing her legs who looked tangled up.
Lucy lifted up Meredith's left leg and started doing the exercises. Meredith was staring at her leg, thinking about how she can't feel them.. A frown appeared on her face and of course her husband noticed.
"You're okay" Derek whispered
"I.. standing up" She sighed again
"Standing up" He repeated
...
Derek and Meredith were sitting in the hospital room. They just contacted someone to renovate the dream house. They would need a chairlift and everything needs to become wheelchair accessible. Derek even asked to make sure the nursery would be changed too. In case they could get Zola back so Meredith wouldn't feel as worthless like she feels now. She hates staying in bed and not being able to do things herself.
Derek's phone started ringing so he looked at his screen "Janet's calling?"
"Go, pick up the phone!" Meredith said
"Hello.. Yeah, that's right" Derek started "No.. the doctors are hopeful"
Now Meredith knew they were talking about her.. Did she ruin it again? Would they let Zola return but did she screw it up by becoming paralyzed?
"That doesn't change anything to our parenting skills. No.. of course.. Yes, I understand. Thank you" Derek said as he hung up the phone
"I.. I'm sorry Derek" Meredith whispered
"Why? Mer.. They want to give us another chance"
"What?"
"But they want to at least wait until you're out of here"
"Derek? Are.. Are you serious?"
"Yes! But they want to do more check ups and another judge will decide on Zola's faith with us but we'll make this work"
"I.. Oh my god!" Meredith screamed before Derek kissed her full on her lips
"I love you, Meredith"
"I love you too, Derek. I need to start working out, Derek, our little girl needs me. I need to make this work
