Chapter 43
"Derek! Hurry, we're gonna be late!" Meredith yelled as she was waiting at the front door.
A bit ago, she was cleared to return to work. She could do charting and consult but no surgeries and no ER for now.
"Coming!" Derek yelled
"Da" Zola laughed. She was sitting in Meredith's lap and playing with her blonde curls.
Finally Derek ran to Meredith and Zola and closed the door before helping Zola in the car while Meredith got herself in. Derek folded her chair and placed it in the trunk and the happy family made their way over to the hospital.
As they made their way into the hospital, Meredith wheeling next to Derek and Zola in her lap, many nurses kept staring at her and once she changed into her scrubs she got some stares from patients. She decided to ignore them and just focus on doing her job.
"Doctor Grey?" Meredith heard a woman say
"Yes?" Meredith said and turned to look at the woman saying her name
"I.. I got your labs" An intern said, who she now recognized as Jo Wilson
Meredith took them and started reading
"Definitely appendicitis" Meredith said and wheeled away followed by Jo
"You want me to book an OR and start him on pre op medications?" Jo Wilson asked
"Yes, I'll ask Bailey to do the surgery" Meredith said and took off.
...
"Mer! Mer, wait!" Meredith could hear Derek's voice and stopped in her tracks. "Wanna lunch together?" Derek asked
"Sounds great. Let's go get Zola" Meredith said and the family took off to daycare. Once they arrived at the cafeteria it became clear how hungry Meredith and Zola were.
"Gosh, Mer! Since when do you even eat vegetables?" Derek laughed
"Pushing yourself all day isn't fun" She replied
"Rot!" Zola yelled as he held a fork with some carrots in her hand
"Carrots, really good Zo" Derek smiled
The little girl moved from Derek to Meredith's lap and buried her head in her mother's chest.
"I think someone needs a nap" Derek said, Meredith nodded and yawned too
"I guess there are two people who need a nap" Derek joked.
"Let's get her up to daycare so she can do a little nap" Meredith suggested and wheeled out of the cafeteria towards the elevator
"Meredith?" A familiar voice said
Meredith looked terrified and turned her head away before trying to escape but she was too late.
"Meredith? Why are you in a wheelchair?" Thatcher asked
"Thatcher, I'm sorry but could we not-" Meredith started but got interrupted
"I asked, what happened" Thatcher repeated
"Mr Grey, I'm sorry but Meredith asked you to-" Derek started
"Who do you think you are? I was asking my daughter!" Thatched now yelled
"Thatcher, please. Leave us alone, you signed all your rights away when you left me"
"Damnit, Meredith! You destroyed my life!"
"I did nothing to you!" Meredith spat out! on the edge of tears
"You killed my wife!" Thatcher yelled
"She gave you a second chance in life! She gave you a piece of her liver" Derek told him
"She only did it because of Lexi!"
"But she did help you!" Derek snapped
"Thatcher, just leave us alone. I don't want to do this" Meredith told Thatcher
Zola started crying and Meredith handed Zola to Derek who started to take off, followed by Meredith who turned her chair and wanted to push herself forward but noticed the chair wasn't moving despite her tries.
Thatcher had grabbed her handles and made it impossible for her to move away. He jerked the chair around so he could face her again.
Meredith was shocked "Hands of my wheels!" She yelled back
"Dad!" Lexi yelled as she run towards them
"Meredith you better tell me what happened" Thatcher said, raising his hand
"Leave me and my family alone" Derek said and grabbed the handles of Meredith's chair and rolled her away before she took over.
Mark and Lexi were now trying to get the drunk Thatcher out of the hospital
Meredith hurried herself into an on-call room followed by Derek and Zola
"He.. I.. Derek" Meredith whimpered
"Shht, slow breaths, calm down, Mer" Derek hung over Meredith, rubbing her back
"Ma?" Zola cried out
"It.. It's okay, Zo" Meredith sobbed, taking Zola out of Derek's arms and holding her close
"It's okay. He's gone" Derek said before kissing her forehead but Meredith kept crying
Derek scooped up Meredith and Zola and sat down on the bed with the two of them on his lap
Lexi ran in, scaring Meredith
"Sorry, I should have knocked. Mark took dad outside" Lexi said
Derek nodded and held Meredith close
"Should I bring Zola to daycare?" Lexi asked, Derek nodded again.
Lexi walked over to Meredith and took Zola in her arms after Meredith gave Zola a kiss on her forehead
"Mommy and I will come get you later" Derek said
Lexi and Zola left the room and Meredith started crying again "I couldn't get away" She whimpered
"Hey, you got away. He's not gonna hurt you"
"I.. He.. He kept yelling.. I-" Meredith fell apart
"Shh, I love you. Wanna take a short nap?" Derek asked as his fingers went through her honey blonde hair
"Will you stay?" Meredith asked
"Of course" Derek said and tucked her in the bed before climbing in bed next to her
"I love you" Meredith whispered
"I love you too" Derek whispered back and kissed her head before they fell asleep in each other's arms
"Can we cancel PT today? I don't want to move today" She said
"Mer.." Derek sighed
"I know, Der.. Just not today, please" Meredith begged
"Let's tell Lucy later, first a nap" Derek said
Meredith nodded and buried her head in Derek's chest
