Chapter 19
Derek woke up and turned around to kiss Meredith but he noticed she wasn't in the bed
"Mer?"
No response so he got up. He checked the bathroom but she wasn't in there so he went to Zola's room. Zola was gone too so he went downstairs where he got welcomed by the smell of breakfast
"Hey, good morning" Derek said as he walked into the kitchen where Carolyn was standing at the stove while Meredith was feeding Zola.
"Good morning" His mother said, smiling while putting a plate of waffles on the table
"Morning" Meredith said before Derek kissed her lips
"Da!" Zola squirmed
"Morning baby girl" He said before kissing Zola's forehead
Derek sat down next to Meredith
"I'm gonna get changed so I can do grocery shopping while you go to the hospital" Carolyn said before walking out of the room
"You were gone when I woke up" He whispered
"I woke up and checked on Zo. Your mom must have heard me and helped her getting downstairs" Meredith smiled
"So.. PT today?" Derek asked
"Yeah. We can leave Zo in daycare until I'm finished. Alex will take us back home while you're working"
"Can you take Zola? I need to use the bathroom"
"Of course" Derek said "Yell if you need help"
Meredith wheeled out of the kitchen and went to the bathroom downstairs. She was out of breath when she finally got transferred onto the toilet. It took a lot of effort as she felt a little feverish
She took some time to catch her breath again before she went back into her chair. She wheeled back into the kitchen as she started wheezing
"Mer? Are you okay?" Derek asked concerned
"Yeah.. Just out of breath from the transferring" She gave him a smile

"Hey, Mer!" Alex said as he walked into the PT room
"Hey, Alex! Thanks for doing this" Meredith said letting out some coughs
"Ready to go get Zola?"
"Let's go!" Meredith said as she wheeled herself out. She was sore from PT
"Need a push?" Alex offered
"No, I got this" She quickly replied
"I'm sorry, Mer"
"No.. I'm sorry.. I just.. I got this, this is the new me and I need to adjust." Meredith said as they reached daycare
"Alex, can you go in?" Meredith asked
"Be right back"
Meredith was smiling as Alex got in to get Zola. She saw him returning with her baby.
"Here you go, Zola." Alex said as he placed her on Meredith's lap
"Hey, baby! Ready to go home? Spending some time with me and uncle Alex"
Zola started clapping as Meredith clenched Zola to her chest as she started to push her wheelchair to his car. He clipped in Zola and helped Meredith get in. He folded her chair and got in the car as he noticed Meredith was wheezing
"Mer?"
"Just.. out of breath.. long PT session" Meredith breathed heavily
The car ride went by fast. Zola was clapping with the music on the radio as Alex and Meredith were talking about a surgery until they reached the dream house. Alex helped Meredith get out before placing Zola on her lap as they got in the house. Carolyn would return later in the afternoon but wanted to give Meredith and Alex some time to talk
"Do you want something to drink?" Meredith asked
"Some coffee would be nice! Need a hand?"
"I'll be fine" She smiled as she wheeled into the kitchen and turned on the coffee machine, meanwhile prepping some milk and food for Zola. She brought the drink and food for Zola to the living room before returning to the kitchen and grabbing the coffees and her pain meds with a bottle of water. She placed everything on a tray that was located on her lap before going to the living room where Alex and Zola were playing on the ground. Alex lifted Zola and placed her on the couch where Meredith was transferring to. She felt her chest burning but ignored it. She started to feed Zola as she and Alex kept talking. Once Zola ate all her food, Alex placed her back onto the floor.
Meredith was thinking to ask Alex to help her on the ground too. She could lower herself but she would probably only harm her back for not being able to position herself against the couch.
"Mer? Do you want to join us?" Alex asked
"Can you help me? Lower me and stuff me against the couch?"
"Of course" Alex said as he lowered her. She grabbed a pillow and placed it on top of her legs and they started playing with Zola
...
"Meredith, dear?" Carolyn's voice echoed through the house
"Carolyn? We're here" She smiled as her, Alex and Zola were still on the ground
"Well, hello! I'm Carolyn, Derek's mother" Carolyn introduced herself
"Nice to meet you ms. Shepherd" Alex said as he gently shook her hand "Mer, need a hand up?"
"Yes, please. Otherwise I would be stuck until Derek gets home" She started laughing witch turned into coughing
Alex scooped her up and placed her back into her wheelchair
"Thanks, Alex!" Meredith smiled
"Anytime, Mer! Okay I need to go now, see you later, Mer! Bye ms Shepherd, Bye Zola"
"Bye Alex" Meredith said as she followed him to the front door "Thanks"

Zola was fast asleep in her crib downstairs. Meredith was folding some laundry as Carolyn was doing the dishes. As time went by, Zola started crying. "I got her!" Meredith said as she went to pick up Zola. "Hey, need a diaper change?" Meredith cooed
Meredith wheeled to the changing table and started changing the diaper until she had to bend over to grab the wipes who fell on the ground. She winced in pain by the movement she made
"Meredith, are you okay?" Carolyn asked as she walked over to Meredith
"My.. back" She breathed heavily
"Do you need your meds?" Carolyn asked, slightly panicking as she had no idea what to do
"Zola.. first.. please" She got out while she was bent over in pain. Carolyn quickly changed Zola and got her back in her crib before she hurried herself to Meredith to give her her meds.
"Dear, do you need to lay down?"
"Yeah"
Carolyn gently pushed Meredith's wheelchair to the couch as Meredith weakly got out and groaned and winced in pain as she almost threw herself on the couch due to the amount of pain she was in. She had no force to do this but there was no way Carolyn could lift her.
"Meredith, it's okay to ask some help"
"I.. I just forgot it for a moment. I was taking care of my baby, today went by great and I wanted to finish this"
"You could, dear. We all know you're an excellent mother, this is a small bump and tomorrow you'll be fine again. Take some rest, Zola is asleep too"
"Thanks, Carolyn. I'm happy you're here"
"Meredith, please call me mom"
