Chapter 34

Meredith's boards were in a few days, so it was time to start packing. "So we have clothes, bathroom stuff, studying things. Now we need to pack things with your wheelchair and to help you get around." Derek said.

"I need my meds." Meredith said. "Got em." He replied with a smile, stuffing them into her suitcase securely. "I did some research, and the airline puts your wheelchair in the cargo section." Derek explained.

"How am I supposed to get off the plane then?" She asked with a frown. Derek sighed. "Alex is probably going to have to carry you to the bagging area. You can get one of their wheelchairs when you actually get off of the plane though." He said.

"I don't want Alex to carry me. That's...no." Meredith said sternly. She didn't want to even go to the airport with the wheelchair, let alone have to be carried around.

"Meredith, it's their policy." Derek replied. He knew she wouldn't like it, but there was no other option. "Derek I don't want that!" Meredith yelled.

"I know you don't. I can't come with you now though since Richard book me surgeries and I have Zo. You can wait until next year though." Derek said calmly.

"I can't wait. I'll get behind...Der." Meredith said, her voice shaky and her breaths becoming rapid. "It's okay. Take a deep breath. Calm down." He replied, lifting her out of her chair and holding her.

"I can't..." Meredith trailed off, gripping his shirt. "It'll be okay. It's gonna be fine, I promise." He murmured.

After a well needed cry, Meredith finally stopped crying. "Alex and Cristina are coming over so we can talk about how to help you. We can finish packing later." Derek said softly.

Meredith nodded as Derek put her back into her chair.

They eventually got downstairs and Meredith transferred to the couch. "Here." Derek said, handing Meredith her meds. She took them gratefully and sighed.

Alex and Cristina came a little while later and entered the house. "Hey Mer. Hey Shepherd." Alex said, sitting down with them on the couch.

"Hey." Meredith said emotionlessly. "What's wrong?" Cristina asked. "Nothing. Let's start with how you guys need to babysit me." Meredith replied.

"We are not babysitting you. You are a grown woman, and just because you can't walk doesn't mean you're a baby." Cristina said firmly.

"Whatever. Here's how you need to babysit me." Meredith said, handing the two of them a typed list Derek helped make.

"That's it? That's easy." Alex said. "Did you get to the part where you have to carry me off the plane? Cause that'll be really fucking awesome." Meredith said bitterly.

"Calm down. You weigh like 100 pounds and it's not far. You'll be fine. I promise I won't drop you." Alex smirked. Meredith cracked a small smile at that.

"What about when we get to the hotel?" Alex asked. "Mer and I are sharing a room. I'll help with whatever she needs." Cristina replied. "See Mer? I told you we got everything. There's no need to worry." Derek said softly.

"I know...I just don't want to bother everyone by having to help me." Meredith admitted. "You're not bothering us. We're happy to help." Alex replied.

They chatted for a little while longer before Alex and Cristina left. "We should finish packing." Derek said lightly. Meredith nodded and winced as she transferred. "You okay?" He asked in concern.

"Just sore. Imagine how I'll be after a long flight." Meredith replied, wheeling herself to the stairs. "That's what your meds are for." Derek pointed out, lifting her up and putting her into the stairlift.

They got upstairs and Meredith wheeled to their bedroom once again. "Okay, we have clothes, bathroom stuff, meds, study material. Now we just have the wheelchair accessories." Derek said.

"I need my back pillow too." Meredith said. "Oh yeahrek replied.  well would you need it the upcoming night before you leave?" Derek asked

"I can try without so we can already pack it" Meredith said as she wheeled to her side of the bed, passing the pillow to Derek

"What do you need during the flight?" Derek asked

"I.. Lucy said it would be good to wear thick socks to keep my feet warm instead of letting Alex or Cristina check every 30 minutes.." Meredith said as she picked some wool socks out of the drawer, placing it on the bed

"What if this won't work out?" Meredith abruptly asked Derek

"I called the hotel this morning, they confirmed that your room is wheelchair accessible and during the reservation for the plane we gave them the list of your special needs" Derek said as he grabbed her hands and lowered himself to her level

"We can't forget my cathing stuff" She whispered

"You want me to put in the catheter before I bring you to the airport?" Derek asked

Meredith nodded "You know Cristina will need to help you when you return?" Derek asked as Meredith nodded again

"Are the others taking the bus that leaves from the hospital?" Derek asked as he scooped her up and sat down with Meredith on his lap

"I was gonna ask Cristina to join us if that's okay for you?"

"Of course, Mer. Zola and I will bring the two of you to the airport and there we'll meet the others

"Derek we need to continue packing" Meredith said as she wiggled a bit before wincing again "Derek, calm down just sore"

"I'll give you a massage tonight and maybe some more" He winked before placing her in the bed

"Derek, packing first" Meredith giggled

"You rest and I'll pack for you" Derek said before kissing her lips and packing all the things she needed

"Never knew travelling as a wheelchair user was thim complicated" Meredith said as she realized that the pillow took a huge space and the medication needed to be packed in her carry on bag but she also needed to pack a double dose to make sure she wouldn't run out of them

"You'll be fine!" Derek said "Here, catch" Derek said as he threw over her cards that she used for studying

"You're right, it will be fine"

"Now study" He laughed "Later tonight we can relax

"I have a feeling it won't be much talking" Meredith giggled
