Chapter 46

Meredith was excited. She woke up with a big smile and gently shook Derek awake. "Mm what?" Derek grumbled sleepily.

"I get to see a surgery today. It's a big day!" Meredith exclaimed. Derek smiled and turned around to her. "It is. What is the surgery?" He asked.

"Kidney transplant. Baileys doing it." She answered. "That's awesome. I'll try to watch if I can." He replied as Zola started to cry. "I'll get her. You go start the coffee." Oh, and can you put my HFAKO in the car?" Meredith asked as she transferred to her chair.

"Sure. Call if you need me."

Meredith rolled herself to Zola's room and leaned over the crib. "Hi baby girl." She said, lifting her out of the crib with some difficulty.

"Maaaaa." Zola said happily. "Let's go see daddy and then go to daycare." Meredith said. She rolled to the stair lift and put Zola in the chair beside her as she transferred, then grabbed her and started down the stairs.

She just recently learned how to do this with Zola. And it made things a lot more easier. "Daaaa!" The baby yelled. Derek chuckled and walked over and lifted her up.

Zola squeezed dereks face and planted a sloppy kiss on his cheek. Derek put her down in the high chair and put her breakfast down.

"Want anything to eat?" He asked. "No thanks."

After breakfast, the family of three left the house and got to the hospital. "Is your surgery now?" Derek asked after they dropped Zola off in daycare. Meredith nodded.

"Can you help me into my brace?" Meredith asked as they turned into the attendings room where Derek put it. "Sure."

Derek strapped the leg pieces on and then the hips and then she was standing. "I love these things. I forgot how nice to was to stand." Meredith said with a smile.

Derek chuckled. "Let's get you to surgery, Dr Grey." He said.

He helped her scrub in and watched her closely as she wiggled closer to the operating table. "Nice to have you back in the OR Dr Grey. How's it feel?" Bailey asked.

"Great. I missed it." Meredith replied. "Alright. Hey Dr Shepherd?" Bailey asked. Derek looked confused as he stood in the doorway of the OR. "Yes?" He asked.

"Before you go come in for a moment." Bailey ordered.

"What's up?" Derek asked. "Come over here and help steady dr Grey. She's going to make the first cut." Bailey said. "Really?" Meredith asked as her lights lit up.

"Really." Bailey answered. Derek strode over and helped move Meredith closer to the table before grabbing her hips firmly yet softly and keeping her steady.

"Go ahead. I'll keep you up." Derek said softly. Meredith grabbed the scalpel Bailey offered her and took a deep breath before cutting into skin.

The rush of surgery never failed to amaze her. "Rhank you." She said genuinely as she handed back the scalpel to Bailey. It was a short time she actually got to hold the scalpel, but it was enough for now.

Derek helped ease her back steady and stepped away. "Nice job." He whispered into her ear before leaving the OR.

The surgery went smoothly without a hitch. Meredith was exhausted and sore by the time it was over, but sad to know it was over. "Nice job Grey. Those things are pretty cool." Bailey complimented as they scrubbed out.

"Yeah they are. I'm waiting to actually feel my legs, but they'll do for now." She replied. "You will. Didn't you say the feelings coming back a little?" Bailey asked.

"More and more everyday." Meredith answered with a yawn. "Good. Now go sit down somewhere. You look exhausted."

Meredith took off the HKAFO with baileys assistance and transferred to her wheelchair before wheeling to a nurses station and doing some charting.

"That surgery was great." Derek said into her ear. "It was. I'm so tired." Meredith agreed. "How about we go home with Zo and have a relaxing end of the day?" He suggested.

"Okay. Let's go pick up zo."

They got Zola and then drove back home. The HFAKO brace was helpful, but it put a strain on her body forcing it to stand up so she was pretty sore.

"Zo, what's the movie today?" Derek asked. "Mo?" Zola asked with a smile. "Again? Okay baby girl." Meredith replied. "Yay!!" Zola squealed.

They usually watch moana probably about 3 or 4, maybe even 5 times a week. Zola absolutely loved it, and didn't even realize what her parents thought about it.

They got home and Derek held Zola while very slowly helped Meredith inside the house. Meredith transferred to the couch and curled up with Zola in her lap.

Derek made popcorn and brought over some other snacks and drinks before sitting down next to his girls.

"Thanks for helping me in that surgery today. I really needed that." Meredith said quietly as the movie began. Zola was already enticed by the characters, she didn't even notice her parents talking.

"Of course. You deserve to be in an OR. You know, before you know it you'll be doing your own surgeries as an official big time attending." Derek said.

Meredith smiled and grabbed his hand. "Let's hope so." She said. "You will. Hey, look at this." Derek said as he pulled up a picture. "Is that me?" She asked.

"Yeah. Hunt published it and now all the big time medical magazines are using it apparently. 'First paralyzed surgeon opens a patient." Derek read.

"That's cool." She said with a yawn. "Close your eyes.I'll take care of Zo." He said softly. Meredith nodded and closed her eyes, letting her drift off into a comfortable sleep. It may only have been 1 in the afternoon, but she was exhausted. A happy exhausted.
