Chapter 58

A few days passed and Zola was feeling better. Meredith, Derek, and Zola drove to the hospital. Derek had a shift, Zola was going to daycare, and Meredith had PT.

"Bye baby. I'll see you soon." Meredith said, handing off Zola to Derek with a kiss on the forehead. "And I'll see you later too. I love you." She said.

"I love you too. Good luck." Derek replied, kissing her gently until a tiny hand pushed his face away. "Guess Zola's anxious for daycare. Let's go ZoZo." He laughed.

Meredith rolled herself to physical therapy and pushed the door open. "Hey Meredith!" Lucy exclaimed with a warm smile. "Come on in." She said.

Meredith smiled and went closer. "So, we're going to work with the bar today without the HFAKO. I think your progressing very well, and I think we may have a breakthrough soon." Lucy explained.

"Really?" Meredith asked hopefully. "Really." Lucy said. "Let's start rhen."

After derek dropped Zola off, he headed to his surgery. "Shepherd! Hows Meredith doing?" Bailey asked, walking alongside him.

"She's doing good. Really good." Derek replied. "She didn't catch that bug Zola got, did she?" Bailey asked, worth dropping into voice.

"No, she didn't. She's okay."

"Good. How would she like to scrub in with me on a surgery tomorrow?" Bailey asked. Derek stopped and looked at her with a grin. "I think she would love that." He replied honestly.

"What's her time limit with that brace? It's an exploratory laboratory." Bailey asked. "I think she could do that, she can last a few hours. She's close to standing on her own." He answered.

"Good. I'll let her know. Is she working today?" Bailey questioned.

Derek shook his head. "PT. She should be out around 4 though."

"I'll find her then. See you later." Bailey said before walking away.

Meredith collapsed into her chair, defeated. She had tried numerous tries to stand up, but she just couldn't. "Try again." Lucy urged gently.

"No." Meredith said, barely audible. "Meredith." Lucy said, sighing. "I can't do it. I just can't." She said.

Lucy had never seen this side of her patient, at least in therapy . Defeated. Lost.

Lucy plopped down next to Meredith and took a deep breath. "Meredith, I know your trying your hardest. I'm fact, your one if not my most determined and hardest working patient. I mean, I have other patients who try hard too, but they get so discouraged. But you don't." Lucy said softly.

"Lucy-"

"No. You don't give up. We've been working together for a few months now, and not once have you given up. You have come so far in therapy, so you are not allowed to quit and give up now." She said sternly.

"It's so hard." Meredith whispered, on the verge of tears. "I know it is. Trust me, I've seen so many patients rhat just can't come back from this. But you can. You are. You just can't give up. Not now. So get your ass up, and let's try again." Lucy said.

Meredith chuckled, sniffling and nodded. She rolled to the bar and took a deep breath before pulling herself up with the handle bars. "There you go. You're doing it!" Lucy exclaimed happily.

Meredith laughed and slowly and carefully let go of the bars. She stood shakily, all on her own. "Try to take a few steps." Lucy encouraged.

Meredith slowly shuffled her feet, actually feeling both of them somewhat. "I-I'm doing it." Meredith breathed in awe. "Yes you are." A voice agreed.

Meredith almost lost her balance as she looked at the door and saw her dreamy husband looking at her. "I'm doing it." She whispered, grabbing on to the bars.

Lucy quickly brought the wheelchair over and helped her in.

"You amaze me." Derek said softly, kissing her. "I did it." Meredith breathed.

"I think you'll be walking pretty soon, Meredith. You did great today." Lucy said with a smile.

The two rolled down the hall, in awe. "You did so good. Do you want to go home?" Derek asked. Meredith nodded. "Grey! There you are." Bailey exclaimed, walking up to them.

"Hey Bailey." Mereditj said, grinning. "You're scrubbing in with me tomorrow. Just an exploratory laparotomy, but your assisting me." Bailey said smiling.

"Really? I can?" Meredith asked.

"Yup. Bring your brace tomorrow and I'll see you for rounds."

They left the hospital after talking to Bailey and getti Zola from daycare and went home.

"ZoZo, your mommy is the coolest. Can you say that?" Derek cooed as he carried Zola in the house with Meredith rolling beside him.

Meredith giggled as Zola gurgled something in baby talk. "Thank you Zo." Meredith said with a grin as she went inside.

Meredith winced as she transferred herself to the couch. "You okay?" Derek asked softly. Meredith flashed a pained smile. "Just sore. Can I have some Tylenol?" She asked.

"Sure." Derek replied, putting Zola next to her and going to the medicine cabinet.

He came back a minute later and handed her some medicine. She took it and sighed in relief. "I'll order pizza. It's a momentous occasion." Derek said with a dorky smile as he sat down on the couch next to his girls.

"Maaaaaaaa." Zola babbled, climbing on Merediths lap. "Be careful, Zo. Mamas sore today. Be gentle." Derek chided lightly. Zola smiled and nuzzled into Merediths neck.

"Good job, Zo." Derek murmured.

A few hours later, after pizza, tv, and talking, Zola was finally in bed and asleep and Meredith and Derek were laying down in bed.

"You know what we can do to celebrate?" Meredith asked suggestively.

"I thought you were sore." Derek stated, rolling on top of her. "Not anymore. Now come on, it's time to celebrate." She said, kissing him.
