Chapter 44
Meredith went back to work after the thatcher incident. She was still shaken up by it. Derek, of course, made sure she was okay to work though.
"Are you sure you're okay to go back? We can take the day off and stay with Zo." Derek urged lightly as they sat in the living room.
"Derek, I can't have my interns thinking I'm an incompetent wheelchair dependent surgeon. That's not who I am." Meredith replied as she played with Zola.
"Nobody is going to think that. Mer, what he did was scary for you." He said softly as he rubbed her back up and down.
"I know it was. And I'm fine. Really, I'm okay. Someone has to handle my interns, and I'm not dumping them on Bailey again."

She rolled up to the nurses station where her interns were and addressed them. "Carver, you're in the pit. David, you're with Bailey. Edwards, you're with Hunt and Wilson youre on scut. Go." Meredith said.
Jo Wilson rolled her eyes as she trudged off to the pit. "What's got you're panties in a bunch?" Danny, one of her fellow interns asked as he walked alongside her.
"Dr Grey is such a bitch. I'm always on scut." Jo scoffed as she marched up to the nurses station and grabbed a few charts.
"She's on wheels, give her a break." Dr Carver replied. Derek just so happened to be at the same nurses station, listening it to their conversation.
"Why did I have to get an attending on wheels? How is she even a doctor? I mean, she can't even operate." Jo asked. She wasn't usually this rude, but Dr Grey was being very unfair.
"I don't think she wants to be on wheels, Jo. I gotta go." Carver said as he ran off. Jo sighed as she plopped down and picked up a chart.
"Hey Wilson?" Derek asked. "Yes dr Shepherd?" She replied with a smile. Dr Shepherd was one of Jo's favorite mentors, aside from Dr Karev.
"Don't talk about my wife like that again or I'll report you to the board." Derek said sternly. Jo gulped and nodded slightly before turning around.

Meredith was on edge all day. She knew Thatcher wouldn't show up or anytning, but still. Being trapped in the chair while he held her from moving made her feel very claustrophobic.
"Mer? Are you okay?" Derek asked as he came up. "What? Oh, yeah. I'm fine." Meredith answered with a fake smile. "Are you scared?" He asked quietly into her ear.
Meredith sighed at how well he knew her and nodded shyly. "You're okay. Nobody is going to hold your handlebars, I promise." He said, kneeling down to her height.
"But..." Meredith trailed off. "No buts. Everyone knows not to touch your wheels without permission." Derek said softly. "Okay." Meredith said. Derek vent down slightly and kissed her. "You okay?"
"I am." She replied.
Jo watched dr Shepherd and dr Grey and took a. Deep breath before walking over. "Dr Grey, can I ask you something?" Jo asked, noticing how her grip on dereks hand got tighter.
"Sure Wilson." Meredith replied. "Can I scrub in on a surgery? I've...been on scut all week and everyone else has been on baileys service." Jo asked nervously.
"Wilson, as in intern you're going to have to learn you won't be on a lot of surgeries. So, no. Go back to scut." Meredith answered.
Jo frowned and looked at her. "Please Dr Grey. I haven't been on a surgery in forever." Jo pleaded. Meredith looked at Derek, getting pissed off.
"Dr Wilson. I haven't been able to cut in months, almost a year. Be thankful that you can cut and that you can move around and actually be a doctor. I don't feel like a surgeon. I feel like a nurse. And I didn't and don't ever want to be a nurse. Internship is hard, Wilson,, I'll tell you that, but complaining to your attending makes it that much harder for yourself. So shut up and do what I tell you to do. Go." Meredith said loudly and angrily.
Jo sighed and walked away, tears building in her eyes. "It's okay." Derek whispered as he pushed her away from the nurses station and into an empty on call room.
"I want to cut. She-she can cut. She has the ability to save a life. I can't do anything. It's not fair, Derek!" Meredith ranted, a few stray tears falling down her face.
"I know it's not. She doesn't know how it is to be stuck in a wheelchair. You don't appreciate being able to walk until someone you know or yourself lives it. She doesn't understand." Derek said softly.
"I want to cut. I-I need to cut, Derek. I've worked my whole life to be able to save a life, to be able to feel the rush of surgery and cutting into someone. It's not fair." Meredith said, angry at the world for letting this happen to her.
"How about I ask Owen about the letting you observe in the OR with the HFAKO?" Derek suggested as he rubbed up and down her arms soothingly. "You can do that?" She asked.
"I don't know. I don't see why not. How about you just take it easy for the rest of the day, and I'll talk to Owen about it?" Derek asked soothingly. "Okay." Meredith whispered. Derek always knew how to calm her down.

Jo trudged off and leant up against a wall. She never thought of how Dr Grey felt, but her anger wasn't letting her feel that.
Dr Hunt happened to walk out of a nearby room and walk to her. "Are you okay?" Owen asked. Jo looked up to him, tears in her eyes. "Why is she so mean?" She asked in a shaky voice.
"Meredith is just trying to teach you." Owen replied. "No, why is she so mean? Is it because of her mother? Did she get it from her?" Jo asked. "What?"
Jo sighed. "Her mother was a cold woman. Everyone knows. Did she get that coldness from her?"
"Dr Grey isn't mean. She is strong. She's not gonna go easy on you cause she knows that would be a deservice to you. You are a surgeon, it is your job to fix things other people can't now if you can't handle that, leave now. If not, we'll stand around in hallways and cry. Cry somewhere else where I won't see you. Meredith Grey has plenty of reasons to cry and give up, but you don't see her doing that." Owen said sharply.
"Dr Hunt, can I speak with you?" Dereks voice asked.
