Chapter 50

Meredith and Derek came home after a long day at work. Meredith was moody and pissed off. She didn't get to consult on a lot of patients today and her interns were annoying her, which was never fun.

The minute the two of them came through the door, Carolyn could tell she had a bad day. Meredith held Zola in her lap, which was something she did frequently to calm herself down.

"Do you want anything to eat Mer?" Derek asked gently. "No, Derek, for the millionth time." Meredith snapped. Carolyn eyes Derek, who shrugged and let out a sigh.

"How about Zola has some Grandma time while you two go upstairs and take a bath or sometning?" Carolyn suggested.

"No-" Meredith started.

"Go. That wasn't a question." Carolyn said sternly as she lifted up Zola into her arms and went to the porch.

Meredith silently transferred to the chairlift and began going up while Derek walked up the stairs. "Do you want me to run you a bath?" Derek asked softly.

He knew she wasn't trying to be mean. He knew that especially after a long day, a really bad long day, she was just over it. Over the chair and over work.

Meredith nodded and rolled to the bathroom. Derek turned on the bath and after a few minutes, it was ready.

Meredith stripped and Derek carefully lifted her into the tub. "You too." She said quietly. Derek smiled and stripped his clothes as well before sitting down behind her and wrapping his arms around her.

"I'm sorry." Meredith whispeed. "It's okay. Bad day." Derek replied. "It's not. I've been an ass to you all day. You don't deserve that." She said as she leant back into his bare chest.

"Mer, it's okay. We all have bad days." Derek said softly into her ear.

"I want things to go back to the way they were. I want to be able to actually operate. I want to stand, and walk, and dance with ZoZo." Meredith admitted.

"And I get so, so jealous seeing everyone do that everyday. And then I take it out on people I don't want to. So I'm sorry." She apologized.

"I can't even imagine how it feels, Mer. How about I turn this into a shower? I can hold you up and maybe it'll make you feel a little better." Derek suggested.

Meredith smiled slightly and nodded. He helped her into the shower chair while he drained the tub and turned the shower on.

"Ready?" Derek asked softly. She nodded and held her arms up. Derek wrapped his arms under hers and supported her weight so she could stand.

"I can feel some in my right leg. It's nice to feel that." She sighed comtently as she rested her head on his chest. Derek cupped her head and held it above his heart.

"It's gonna come back Mer. Were one step closer." Derek whispered. Meredith nodded and pulled away slightly to grab shampoo. She massaged it through her hair and sighed happily.

She liked when Derek held her up. It made her feel somewhat independent when she was able to wash herself.

Meredith cleaned herself and washed her hair before moving on to Derek. This was an intimacy the couple loved doing for each other. Being close to each other, naked, but not having sex was comfortable for them.

The two of them got out of the shower and dried off before changing. Derek opted to carry Meredith downstairs as she was sick of the chair and they met Carolyn and Zola downstairs.

"Everything okay?" Carolyn asked softly, noticing how Meredith stayed in dereks arms even as they sat down. "Everything's okay. Just a bad day." Derek replied.

Meredith scooted off of dereks lap next to Zola, who crawled on to her lap. "Someone's energetic tonight, huh?" Meredith asked with a smile to her baby.

Zola giggled and bounced up and down on her lap. "Ow!" Meredith gasped suddenly. "What's wrong Mer?" Derek asked in concern.

"I-I felt her. Left leg too I think." She said in surprise. "Really?" Derek asked with a smile. Meredith shifted Zola to just her left leg and Zola bounced up and down.

Meredith winced, but smiled. "I felt it." She whispered happily. "See? I told you, one step closer everyday. You have some feeling back in both your legs. Your nerves are reconnecting." Derek said as he kissed her softly.

"That's great, sweetie." Carolyn said with a motherly smile. "Next step is walking again." Meredith said as she cuddled Zola to her chest.

"You'll do great. Hey, when you can operate again, I'll schedule a surgery together. Just us. Maybe you'll want to transfer back to neuro." Derek said with a playful smile.

"Yeah, cause ehat worked so well before. I would love to do a surgery with you." She said, kissing him again.

Carolyn watched from a distance and smiled. The atmosphere changed from about an hour ago from dark and moody to happy and hopeful. Her son and Meredith reminded her so much of her and her husband.

"You see, normal people do dinner dates. You know, dressing up, bottle of wine, basket of carbs. But you two do surgery dates. Chatting over a nice, bloody brain. It's very romantic." Carolyn joked.

"Don't knock it till you try it. It can be romantic." Derek sassed back. Meredith giggled and grabbed his hand.

Today sucked, sucked a lot, but it ended with a bang. Meredith would be able to walk, they knew that, but hopefully now it would be soon.

Later that night, Meredith and Derek were in bed, Meredith curled in his arms happily. "Thank you." Mereditj sighed. "For what?" Derek murmured.

"Taking care of me. Calming me down. I don't know how I'd get through this if it wasn't for you." She said into his shoulder. "It's my pleasure, Mer. I love you more than anything." Derek replied, smiling.

"I love you too Der."
