Chapter 62

Meredith was at work one day, when a patient and her husband came into the emergency room. "Hi, my name is Dr Grey. What's going on?" She asked.

"I've been having really bad stomach aches for the past two weeks about." The female patient replied

"She's been throwing up every morning. And she's been really tired." The husband said.

"Okay, first off, what's your name?" Meredith asked. "Gracie Redder." She answered. Meredith starting making a chart for her.

"So you've been experiencing stomach aches and throwing up for a few weeks now?" Meredith asked. "That's right. And I have no appetite." Grace said.

"Okay. Is there a chance you could be pregnant?" Meredith asked.

The two of them froze. "I...we....maybe?" The husband, Tommy replied. "When is the last time you've had a menstration cycle?" Meredith questioned.

"Uh...oh my god! I've been so busy, it slipped my mind. It's probably been at least 3 weeks." Grace said in shock. "Holy crap." Tommy breathed.

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'll order and ultrasound and text your blood." Meredith said calmly, somewhat soothing the frantic couple.

As she took a vial of blood, Meredith thought to herself. When was the last time she had her period? She tried to mentally calculate it, but she couldn't think of when. Meredith swallowed as the ultrasound came in and shook her thoughts aside.

"Okay. I'm going to spread the gel on your stomach and just take a peak." Meredith explained.

She spread the gel around with the probe, and sure enough, there was a baby in there. "There it is." Meredith announced. "Oh my god." The couple breathed.

"I....does it look okay?" Grace asked nervously. "I'm not an OB, but from what I can see it looks just fine. I'll set you up with an obstetrician and get you situated there." Meredith replied.

Meredith left the patient and went into a supply room. She took out her phone and check the calendar. She hadn't gotten her period in over 4 weeks. Meredith is normally like a clock when it comes to this stuff.

She breathed out a shaky breath and grabbed a pregnancy test. Meredith went to the nearest bathroom and took the test.

She couldn't be pregnant, could she? She would be ecstatic, but after last time...who knows what could go wrong. Could her back handle a pregnancy?

She paged Derek to the supply room and paced around waiting for him and for the test to be done. "Mer?" Dereks voice rang out.

"Derek." Meredith said breathy. "What's going on? Why'd you page me here?" Derek asked in concern. "I....here." She responded, thrusting the pregnancy test in her hand.

"You think you might be...." Derek trailed off, a big grin on his face. "I don't know. I've been so busy with work and Zola and....it's been more than a month since I've had my period." She answered.

"That's amazing, Mer!" Derek exclaimed happily. "How much longer?" He asked. "1 minute. Derek, what if I am pregnant?" Meredith asked.

"Then it'll be a miracle. And we'll figure it out. Whatever happens, happens." Derek replied calmly.

After a minute, Derek looked. "We're having a baby!" Derek said happily as his face lit up. "We...wow." Meredith breathed as Derek took her into his arms.

"I'm scared, Derek." Meredith whispered. "Why?" Derek asked softly, looking into her eyes. "Last time....I can't....I can't go through that again. And what if my back can't carry a baby full term? I mean, I'm so happy we're having another baby, but there's so many things that could go wrong." Meredith rambled, biting her lip.

"Whatever happens, happens. But we'll do everything to support this pregnancy and you. Have a little faith, Mer. We've had our fair share of shitty things happen to us. I think we're due for some happy." Derek said, smiling as he put his hand gently on her stomach.

"Our baby is in there." Meredith whispered, covering his hand with her own.

"Are you feeling okay? What made you think of it?" Derek asked, wanting to know everytbing about it.

"I had a patient in the ER. She's pregnant, but she didn't know. Came in with constant stomach aches and vomiting. I did an ultrasound and bam, there it was." Meredith explained.

"How are you feeling? Can you feel any changes or anytning yet?"

"No. I feel fine. I mean, my boobs are a little sore but after what you did to them last night it could be you." Meredith said with a smirk.

Derek chuckled. "Do you want to do a quick ultrasound now or just wait until we book an appointment?" Derek asked.

"Now. I want to...last time it was only a few weeks...now." She responded.

Meredith never really talked about the miscarriage to anyone. It was too painful for her to bring up those memories. The physical pain of it, and the mental pain of losing a baby and almost losing Derek was too much for her.

They went into an empty exam room and Meredith squirted the gel into her stomach while Derek set up the ultrasound.

"Ready?" He asked. "Yeah." She replied. Derek spread the gel with the probe and looked at the screen. Being a surgeon for so many years, let alone being married to a neonatal surgeon for 11 years meant that he knew quite a bit about obstetrics.

Derek froze the frame and pointed in awe. "There it is." He whispered, swallowing thickly as he grabbed her hand. "That's...our baby." Meredith said with a happy laugh.

"Does it look okay?" Meredith asked. "Looks good. Mer, we're having a baby." Derek said in amazement.

"I love you so much." She said.

"I love you too, Mer."

They were finally expanding their family.
