Chapter 55
"Doctor Grey?" Meredith heard as she was charting
"Yeah?" She said as she turned her chair around
"I- I need you for a consult" Jo Wilson said
"I'll come" Meredith said an put the chart on the nurse station and she wheeled toward her intern
"Room 1241" Jo said
Meredith wheeled ahead, closely followed by her intern. She entered the room and immediately noticed the confused face of the patient.
This happens quite often and she could understand that a doctor in a wheelchair raises questions.
"Good morning, I'm Doctor Grey. I'm here to do a quick check up on you" She said
"You?" The young men questioned
"Yes, I'm here to see what procedure would be best for you" Meredith said as she checked his chart
"Are you gonna do my surgery?" He asked, quite rude
"Unfortunately, no. But I'm here to discuss your options and then one of my colleagues will perform the surgery" She explained
"But.. you're in a wheelchair?" The patient pointed out
"As you can see" Meredith nodded
"I'm sorry but what are you even doing here? I want another doctor!" The patient made a scene
"Excuse me but Doctor Grey is one of our best surgeons and even though she isn't able to operate at this moment, she's still an excellent doctor." Meredith heard a familiar voice and she turned around.
Bailey apparently heard the conversation
"As Doctor Bailey already said, I'm still capable doing my job, a wheelchair doesn't change a thing during my consults." Meredith said
The patient seemed uncomfortable and excused himself for his behaviour. Meredith looked at the charts while Jo performed an exam. Afterwards, Meredith rolled out if the room and went to an on-call room.
She transferred to one of the beds and rolled on her side 'ass' she thought.
Meredith fell asleep and woke up next to Derek's body. She pushed her body a bit deeper into Derek's arm.
"Hey, you're awake" He whispered
"I am" She replied
"I heard what happened" Derek said as his fingers went through her honey blonde hair.
Meredith turned on her side, facing Derek and her fingers were gently rubbing his cheeks.
"Yeah" She sighed and her hands moved under his shirt, resting on his chest
"Hmm.. Are you pushing something" He asked with a smirk
"Who knows" She winked
"Here? You really-?" He questioned
"It's been a long time" She said
"Too long" He said and pulled off her shirt
"Derek!" She moaned as he pulled of his shirt too
...
"Hmm.. I don't wanna get up" Meredith groaned, her head resting on Derek's chest
"We should" He said "I have surgery in an hour"
"Me too.. Can you help me with my brace?" She asked him
"Let's go" He said as he handed her her clothes and put them on his own.
The two of them kept talking as they made their way to the surgical wing. Derek helped Meredith into her HKAFO brace and helped her up, giving her the walker and they walked together to the OR where Bailey would perform the surgery.
"Let's go. I'll see you after" Meredith said as she kissed him
"Bye!" He said and left once he helped her scrub in and into the OR.
Meredith was early as the patient wasn't even asleep yet.
"Do-Doctor Grey?" He stuttered as he noticed her and stared at her lower body
"Don't worry. I'm not gonna perform the surgery, I'm here to observe" Meredith pointed out
"I'm sorry about earlier. I thought-"
"I know you thought that disabled people aren't able to do anything. Well, here I am to prove you wrong." Meredith said and the anesthetist put the patient asleep.
...
"Doctor Grey, how are you feeling?" Bailey asked Meredithas before looking in the gallery to see who was watching
"Uh, pretty good? Thanks" Meredith replied, confused
"Doctor Shepherd, can you scrub in?" Bailey asked
"Uh, yeah" He replied and came down
When Derek entered the OR, Bailey spoke up "Doctor Grey, do you wanna close the patient?"
"Really? Yes!" Meredith said
"Doctor Shepherd, can you come up here and steady Doctor Grey?"
"Yes" He smiled and walked behind her, helping her closer to the table before placing her walked to the side and steadying her body
Meredith smiled at Bailey as she left the OR
Meredith was focussed on finishing the final stitch as a bunch of people started clapping. All the people in the OR but also Cristina, Bailey, Alex and Richard that were watching from the gallery
"You did so good" Derek whispered in her ear and felt her body collapse in his arms
"Thanks" She whispered as Derek handed her the walker
"Let's scrub out, then we can go home"
"Sounds like a great plan" Meredith smiled
Derek helped her scrubbing out and taking off the brace before she got back in her chair and the two off them went to go change
"Hmm" Meredith groaned as she was almost falling asleep as Derek helped her with her shoes
"Let's go get Zola" He said and strapped her shoelaces.
Meredith smiled and together they made their way over to daycare. As they came closer, they could see Zola playing with some other kids and some toys but the second Zola spotted her parents, she came, hobbly running over
"Mamaaa!! Dadaaa!" She yelled
"Hey baby" Meredith smiled and lifted the girl
"Hey, Zo. How was today?" Derek asked
"Yaa!" The little girl screamed
"Let's go home, good?" Meredith asked
"Yaa!" The little girl screamed again
"Well the, Let's go" Meredith giggled and the family off three took off
