Chapter 38
Today was the day. The biggest day of Merediths career. Meredith woke up and grabbed her phone from the nightstand.
"Mer?" Derek askedas he answered the phone. "Hi Der. How's it going? How's Zo?" Meredith replied as she used her upper body strength to pull herself to the edge of the bed, where her chair was.
Cristina was still sleeping soundly on the other bed, so Meredith made sure she was quiet. "It's good. Zo and I are just watching some cartoons right now and having breakfast. How are you? Nervous?" Derek asked.
Meredith sighed in relief. Her mother's instinct was on high alert leaving her baby alone. "I'm fine. Cristina and Alex helped on the plane a lot. And yes, I'm nervous." Meredith answered with a nervous chuckle.
"Domt be. You're gonna be fine. What time are they at?" He asked. "12. I have to wake Cristina up soon so we have a few hours to study more." She replied.
"Alright. How has it been getting around?" Derek questioned. "Pretty good. Alex and Cristina have been helping, so it's okay." She replied. "Alright. Well, Zo and I are going to the zoo today. Right zo? Anyways, call me after your boards." Derek said.
"Okay. I love you. Tell zo I love her." Meredith said. "I will. I love you too, call me if you need me." He said before hanging up the phone.
Meredith transferred herself to her chair and rolled over to cristinas bed. She reached An arm out and gently shook her friends shoulder. "Cris. Wake up. It's 8, and you wanted to study." Meredith said.
Cristina quickly woke up, and got out of bed. "You okay? You need anything?" She asked as she brushed her teeth. "No, I'm good. Alex texted and said they were going downstairs to the dining room for breakfast so we'll meet them down there and study." Meredith answered.
"Sounds good."

A little while later, everyone was sitting down at the breakfast table. "How are you guys feeling?" Jackson asked as he skimmed through a textbook.
"Ready. I know I'm ready. But nervous. Really nervous." April replied. "I'm resdy, I'll ace it." Cristina said confidently.
"Mer?" Jackson asked. "Oh, I'm nervous. But I studied a lot so...." she trailed off. "I'm sure we'll all do fine." He said with a smile.
"Let's keep studying." Alex suggested.
Hours later, it was time. Meredith rolled around anxiously in the hall, waiting for her turn. "Mer, stop rolling. Your stressing me out." Alex said sternly, grabbing her handle bars and stopping her.
Suddenly, it felt like the walls were caving in. "I, uh, need to get some fresh air." Mereditj stammered. "Mer!" Alex called as she rolled away quickly. "I'll be back!" She yelled back.
Meredith got outside and leant over her chair to throw up. She whimpered as she straightened herself up and wiped her mouth.
Meredith shakily grabbed her phone and dialed dereks number. "Mer? Aren't you supposed to be taking your test?" Derek asked, concern evident in his voice.
"I can't do it Der. I'm gonna fail. They-they're gonna fail me. I can't." Meredith said, her voice breaking as she fought off tears.
"Oh, Mer. You aren't going to fail, I promise. This test....it's a mirror." Derek said, his voice soothing. "Of what? My stressed out competence?" Mereditj asked bitterly.
"Think about it." He replied. "Are you..." she trailed off, taking a deep breath. "Are you saying that I'll hate myself if I don't take the test?" Meredith asked, with a shaky tone.
"You're gonna do great. I love you." Derek said before hanging up the phone. Meredith took a deep breath and rolled herself back in.
"Dr Meredith Grey?" A member of the test committee asked. "I'm here." Meredith replied, confidently rolling right on in the room.
•••
"Dr Grey, is it?" One of the doctors asked. "Yes." She replied. "Married to Dr Shepherd?" Another asked. Meredith nodded and frowned as she scribbled a note on her paper.
"Can I ask you a personal question?" A doctor Meredith recognized as Dr Paul Castillo asked. "Sure."
"How did you....injure yourself?" He asked. Meredith frowned. "Baby run. We were in the ambulance and got hit." She replied. "Are you ever going to regain feeling?" He asked.
"It was an incomplete spinal cord injury, so yes." Meredith answered. "How do you expect to be a surgeon if-"
"Neurosurgeon." Meredith corrected. "How do you expect to be a neurosurgeon if you can't walk or stand?" Dr Castillo asked rudely. "I can chart for the meantime until I can stand and walk, I can consult, I could do everything that doesn't involve walking." Meredith replied.
"But-" Paul started.
"Okay, that's enough Dr Castillo. Now, dr Grey. Let's get on to the questions." A female doctor intervened with a kind smile.
It was one question. After another. After another. And after another. But Meredith knew the answer to every single one.
"How did you guys do? I got stuck on one but the rest were easy." Jackson asked quickly as they met up outside. "I knew all of them." Meredith said with a proud smile.
"Me too." Cristina replied. "Let's go get some drinks to celebrate, because I did too." Alex said with a smirk. "Sounds good. Mer, you up for that?" Cristina asked. "Hell yeah. Let me just call Derek before." Meredith answered.
•••
"How did it go?" Derek asked as he answered his phone. "Really good. Really good. My test instructor was an assholr but I knew every question." Mereditj said with a smile.
"Good. Who was the asshole?" Derek replied protectively. "Dr Castillo." Meredith answered with a sigh. "Oh, he's an asshole for sure. Are you okay? What are you guys up to know?" Derek asked.
"We're going out for drinks. And yes, I know only one because of my meds." Meredith replied. "Okay. Be safe. I love you and I'm so proud of you." Derek said.
"I love you too." She answered.
Now, it was time to celebrate.
