Chapter 41
"You want me to stay the whole time?" Derek asked Meredith after they dropped off Zola at daycare.
"Can you?" Meredith asked
"Yeah, today is my day off" Derek told her and kissed her lips when they entered the elevator, on their way to PT.
"Goodmorning, Meredith, Derek." Lucy said as she entered the room where Meredith and Derek were already waiting
"Morning" Meredith and Derek said at the same time
"Okay, let's get started for the day. First I want you to workout your arms like we discussed, afterwards we'll focus on stretching your legs and then the shock therapy."
Meredith nodded and made her way to the corner where all the weighting stuff laid and started working out. Derek pulled out his tablet and started doing some paperwork.
...
"Okay, Meredith. Small break and I'll be back in 10 minutes" Lucy said and left the room. Meredith slowly made her way over to Derek who held a water bottle ready for Meredith. Her arms were shaking from the effort and she shakily took the water bottle and started drinking.
"You did great, Mer" Derek said while rubbing her left arm
Meredith smiled and stretched her shoulders and neck
"Maybe we should ask her when you can start charting again" Derek said
"I hope soon but I think I'll need to take new scans first anyway."
"Well then we'll do that" Derek smiled and took her water bottle back and placed it on the ground at his feet.
"Any pain?" Derek asked
"Nothing bad, just a bit of pressure on my SCI." She told him right before Lucy walked back in.
"Okay, Meredith. Can you lay down on the table so I can start exercising your legs?" Lucy asked
Meredith wheeled herself to the table and made the move to get herself up. Her arms shook from the effort but she managed to get herself on the table. She lifted up her legs and placed them in front of her and laid down on her back, letting go a sigh.
Derek hated seeing her struggling but for being a paraplegic since a relatively short time she's doing wonderful. Most people are still in denial but his wonderful wife was doing all of these appointments, she took care of herself to not get sick again, she even flew to the other side of the country a few days back.
Lucy started with stretching Meredith's left leg and everything seemed to go alright until she grabbed her other leg and started a few exercises. When lucy brought Meredith's knee to her chest she winced in pain and placed her leg back on the table before they started spasming heavily.
Derek immediately walked to Meredith and handed her some pain meds before holding her legs and rubbing them when he noticed she was on the verge of tears.
"Lucy, can we have a moment?" Derek asked and Lucy nodded and left the room
"Mer, talk to me. How bad is it?" Derek asked her
"Very" She said, still sobbing
"On a scale of 1-10" Derek asked again
"8" Meredith said before wiggling a bit in a try to find a comfortable position but it felt like she was making it worse with every movement, at this point even breathing hurt.
Derek saw she was in a lot of pain and tried to help her by rubbing her legs and he kept saying "You'll be fine when your meds kick in"
After a couple of minutes her spasms started to stop and Derek kissed Meredith's forehead when he rolled her on her side and massaged her back around her scar.
She moaned and Derek felt her body relax and it was obvious that her meds were kicking in.
Lucy walked back in and asked if everything was okay
"Well, it would be okay if my legs would work.. but I'm okay for now" Meredith sighed
"Let's finish stretching your ankles, otherwise your muscles won't be much worth. Then we'll start shock therapy, okay?"
Meredith nodded and Derek's fingers made their way through Meredith's hair
"Lucy, her spasms are getting worse, her pain is more often. Does this mean anything?" Derek asked
"Well, I noticed her muscles are showing signs of reaction again. Her toes gave a small movement when I was stretching. It will be a long way to get to the point of fully regaining the feeling in your legs, Meredith. But I want to wait after this session of shock therapy and see if there's any change."
...
"So, Meredith. Your toes gave some small movement but you didn't feel it, right?"
Meredith nodded and grabbed Derek's hand. He squeezed her hand a bit.
"I want you to take some scans and let your team of doctors evaluate the results. We're gonna fit you soon for a HKAFO brace, this means we'll can get you standing even when you don't feel them. Once your hips start to regain strengths we can move to regular KAFO braces and then we'll see how much feeling you'll regain. I can't promise you when and if you're gonna walk on your own and when you do I can't promise how steady you'll be but I see this bright." Lucy said and ended the session today.
"So.. in a while I can stand up?" Meredith asked again
"Yes, but you won't be standing with your own force. The braces will hold you up. You'll barely have balance so we'll use the bars to get you up, maybe after a while when you adjust we can move to a walker."
"I can't wait to stand up again." Meredith said and smiled widely. Derek squeezed her hand and kissed it
"I want you to take some new scans and maybe you can come back to work for a few hours. We can make a schedule that combines work and PT but that doesn't tires you out
Meredith and Derek left and picked up Zola from daycare before they made their way home. Once they arrived, Derek helped Meredith into the couch and the family decided to spend this day relaxing. Today Zola decided that she wanted to watch Frozen and Derek made lunch for them. Meredith was fast asleep on the couch with Zola next to her who was clapping with the songs.
