[flashback]

"Erwin was assassinated yesterday." I froze when I heard those four words. I couldn't think. All I could do was slam the door and crumple to the floor. My heart felt like it was being stabbed repeatedly. I clutched my chest and started sobbing like there was no tomorrow. Everything hurt, emotionally and physically.

The worst part? I was pregnant with a child who'd never meet their father.

[present time, 5 years later...]

"Mommy? Can I get this?" I looked down at my five year old daughter, who held up a stuffed monkey with a cheerful smile. She was only about up to my hip, with hair the same color as mine and icy blue eyes. Eyes just like her father's. She wore a pink hooded sweatshirt, blue denim jeans, and blue and pink Twinkle Toe sneakers.

"Uh, no, not today honey. I'm sorry." I replied as I gently took the stuffed animal out of her tiny hands and put it back on the shelf. She let out a small whimper as we exited the store with the bags of groceries. She wanted to carry a bag too, so I handed her one of the lightest bags, which had a bag of spinach, a loaf of bread, and a package of blueberries.

I helped her up into the backseat of my car and buckled her into her car seat. Then, I climbed into the driver's seat and started the car. After about 15 minutes of driving, we finally pulled into the parking lot of the apartment building I lived in. When my daughter, Rose, saw some of her neighborhood friends playing outside, she eagerly asked if she could join them. I said yes, on the exception that she didn't go too far.

"Thank you mommy!" She hugged my leg before running over to her friends. I smiled at her youth, she might as well enjoy it. I grabbed the bags from the back and climbed up the two flights of stairs to my apartment, 3B. I raised my key to unlock it, only to find...it was already unlocked...?

"That's suspicious..." I thought to myself as I pushed the door open. I grabbed the bag of spinach, even though it wouldn't serve much use against an intruder. I silently crept in and raised the bag of spinach. Why did I grab the spinach? Am I really that dumb? I should've grabbed the gallon of milk!

"Show yourself intruder!" I called out, ready to attack with my...bag of spinach. Suddenly, a figure stepped out from my dining room. I let out a war cry and and swung as hard as I could with the spinach. The 6'2 man only grunted and rubbed his cheek where I hit him.

"If I was a real intruder, you'd be dead." Wait. I recognized that deep smooth voice. I slowly looked up and started to breath deeply in fear. Was I seeing a ghost or something? How the hell...? That blonde hair, ocean blue eyes, perfect eyebrows...Erwin Smith.

[3 hours later...]

I woke up to the soft murmur of two voices. My head was throbbing painfully and my vision was blurry. But from what I could tell, I had passed out again. I saw the tall blonde on his knee helping Rose put the straw in a Capri-Sun juice pouch. I chuckled softly, Erwin must've heard me, because he turned to me with sad, dull eyes. Rose thanked her father for helping her and ran out the door happily, going back outside to play with her friends.
