Your hearing had always been a problem. You had Grommets when you were only 5, since your hearing was already bad, but it only seemed to get worse, and by the time you were 18, there was no point in having hearing aids anymore.

So when you witnessed a murder, you didn’t know what to do. You hadn’t had speech therapy and you were basically mute, so you couldn’t go talk to someone. You tried signing to police but they couldn’t understand you.

Luckily that day, Sherlock was bothering them, and saw your frantic signing as an officer tried to escort you out. Reading your signing, he rushed over, pushing the officer away, and asking you to sign that again. You signed what had happened, what you had seen, and described what he looked like. Days later, the man was arrested.

You expected Sherlock to never talk to you again, but you found he would come visit you often, including taking you for tea and back at his apartment. You had met mrs Hudson and John, though Sherlock came to visit you alone. You knew he was a detective and you heard he was mean… but he had been nothing but nice to you.

You were at your favourite café with Sherlock like most weekends, discussing things, and you were talking about how you were considering having a service dog, and he was telling you about his recent bust. Would you like another drink? Sherlock signed at you. You nodded, and he took your cups and went inside to get them refilled. While you waited you read the newspaper and saw Sherlock’s recent case was in it.

You suddenly felt someone wave their hand in your face making you jump back. You looked around and saw about 6 people, 3 boys and 3 girls, all between the ages of 14 and 20… and they were laughing at you. You saw the people staring at them and you. That’s when one of them started to talk. “Why don’t you talk?” He read his lips.

I’m sorry, I’m deaf. You signed.

“Oh looks she’s throwing gang signs! What’s up with this freak!?” One girl asked.

I’m deaf, I cannot hear you, but I can read your lips. You hoped signing clearly would get the message across.

“I think the freak’s deaf. She probably can’t hear us.” One commented. You huffed, grabbing your bag and standing up at go find Sherlock. That’s when you felt it. Someone shoved you. You started to tumble forward, and you braced.

Luckily before you hit the ground, Sherlock had seen them push you and sprinted to catch you. He stood you up quickly “Are you OK?” He asked you. Reading his lips, you nodded shakily, before he put you behind him. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Sherlock growled at the group.

“Chill out, we’re only joking about.” One defended. Sherlock grabbed his collar roughly.

“Well I don’t find it funny. You harass and assaulted a deaf woman you manky git!” He told him, before shoving him onto the ground. “You have till I lose my temper with you to get out of my sight, or I will arrest you and drop you off at Scotland Yard!” He threatened. They were quick to run off. Sherlock huffed and turned to you. He let out an “Oof!” When he felt you hug him tightly. He hesitated but then hugged you back.
