I jammed Kenji's dinner knife he had found into one of the two frozen fruit cans we had left. Sammy was busy attacking the other one with an ice-cream scooper. Yasmina walked on both her feet over to a blackboard we had set up and picked up a stick of chalk. Sammy threw her can in frustration, it rolled across the ground and it hit Yasmina's ankle. Sammy gasped and quickly apologised.
"Heh, it's okay," she said, she then tallied off the twenty-second day we had been here. I looked at the makeshift brace I had made for her ankle, simple wood tied around her ankle by bandages, by now it was almost healed and for most of the day she could walk normally. No-one was happier about it then she was.
"Five more minutes," Brooklynn groaned from her bed.
Kenji walked over to the shower and pulled the gate closed and then proceeded to drape his clothes over the gate, it covered as much as we could make it but we could still see his head over the top. He flipped open the faucet and cold water dropped from above. He yelped in fright, "does this water ever get warm!?" He cried.
Darius sat on the couch next to me, I had abandoned the can and left the knife on the table. He pulled out a small handbook and started to write about some new behavioural patterns he had found in the Compsagnathus' who had moved in near us. Suddenly an empty plastic container flew at his face and bounced off him. "Hey, amigo," Kenji called from the shower, "a little help please?"
Darius made to get up but I stopped him, "I'll take care of it," I said, "I got you Kenji". Darius smiled and went back to his book.
"If you keep doing that he'll never learn to do it for himself," Yasmina said. I shrugged and climbed down the ladder. I walked over to the stream to refill the container but what I saw shocked me. I dropped the container and it rolled away.
"Uh, guys," I said looking at the stream, "we're out of water". The others met me at the stream in a matter of seconds. In front of us, the stream was almost completely drained and had turned from a clear gushing blue, to a still, shallow and murky brown. Darius and Brooklynn jumped down and inspected the water. Brooklynn walked to the other side of the stream and looked around. "I don't get it," I said, "where could all the water have gone?"
"Why don't you ask Mr forty-five minute shower?" Yasmina asked sarcastically.
"Hey, keeping this great look and smell is not achieved easily," Kenji said.
Brooklynn turned around and shushed us. "I hear that strange hum again," she said. We all groaned, she had been talking about this more and more over the days. "The river must have been blocking it out before but if I follow it now, I bet I can find that-".
"Frozen batch of flowers," we interrupted in unison.
"Oh," Brooklynn said sheepishly, "I've mentioned it, huh?"
"The frozen batch of flowers you saw once but have never seen again?" Kenji said, "uh, yeah a couple of times".
"Well I'm sorry about wanting to find out more about all the weirdness going on on this island," Brooklynn said gesturing around her. "I came here to unbox...".
"Unbox Jurassic World so that's what I'm going to do," we all said in unison again.
"Look, I'm going to go find where that noise is coming from, your welcome to come along but I'm going". Brooklynn announced. Sammy immediately rushed up to Brooklynn's side and said that she'll go too.
"I'll go if Sammy's going," Yasmina said running with a new spring in her step to the others.
"What about us?" I asked.
"You three have got a water problem to fix," Brooklynn said to us, putting on her best demanding yet still joking tone.
"Shouldn't be too hard," Kenji said, "after all I know this place...".
