The End of the Beginning

The sun had only just started rising over the horizon, only the faintest of light shining across world around them. Despite the limited amount of light that made it through the windows of the house, Max still stirred.

He opened his eyes slowly, remembering where he was, and immediately wished he hadn't. He wished he could just go back to sleep, and stay like that, in this moment forever. Sadly, his head tilted down, and looked at the sleeping girl cuddled up beside him on the couch, her arms wrapped around him with her head on his chest.

The two of them had spent every waking moment of the past few weeks together, never wanting it to end. Last night, when they realised it would be their last night together for a long while, they spent it all here in the living room, watching movies, eating food, simply talking.

Neither wanted to let the other go. Yet, they had fallen asleep at last, and the night had ended.

Now, today was the day. He would have to go back out there. The people of this world needed his help, he was the only one who had any chance of stopping the havoc being wrecked across the country, so he had to go out and try.

But actually getting out there, was always the hardest, most heart breaking effort, because it meant leaving her behind, just like he had to every time. They both knew, as much neither wanted to be apart, her trauma was still too strong for her to go with him, and he couldn't stay here, not when people needed him.

Spend months out there in the world, until exhaustion threatened to take over, then come back here and spend a few weeks in peace, only to have it end and be forced to resume the same cycle, that had no end in sight.

Max hated the circumstances, even more so because he knew he had nobody to blame for all this, but himself. He had forced them both into this system, and it was all he could do to make it right, which was why he had to go.

Though, not right now. Max sighed with a frown, leaning his head down, his forehead gently touching the top of her head, taking in her presence as much as he could before duty called. he stayed there, simply listening to her quiet breathing, dreading the moment this would have to end.

And end it did.

Yasmina woke up, her head tilting up to meet his. Both of them stared at each other, the looks in their faces more than enough to let the other know what they were thinking. Yasmina's hand crawled up and met his cheek, cupping it. Max's hand raised and clasped hers. The two leaned forward and pressed their foreheads together.

"The twenty seventh, the month after the next, I'll be right here again," Max stated quietly.

Yasmina nodded, the two of them holding their position for a few seconds longer, then they separated, the cold air rushing to fill the sudden gap between them. With a heavy heart, Max stood from the couch and reached over the sight, picking up a large, black backpack, pre packed with everything he needed. He shouldered it and walked down the hallway to the front door, opening it and stepping out.

After walking down the steps the porch and stopped, turning around, facing Yasmina, who had followed him, like she did every time. The two stared at each other, neither one able to find the right words to say to make this any easier. Instead, Max simply settled for opening his arms out to her, which she rushed into in less than a second. She felt tears sting her eyes, but she kept them in, for his sake and her own.

"I'll be back soon," Max said, wrapping his arms around her tighter. "You'll see me again

"You promise?" It was stupid question, but asking it just made her feel better.
