A Beacon Of Hope

When I think of a morning run, I picture a nice chill exercise on a nice day that's not too hot, not too cold, just something to do to get the brain working, so you can go home and be ready to start the day.

What I do not picture is myself and five other kids being chased by a giant animal through a sweltering jungle infested with creatures of all shapes and sizes that seem to be itching to sink their teeth into us, and some of them don't even eat meat!

But alas, that was what fate had in store for my fellow campers and I this fine, young morning. Of course things could be worse, but frankly, not much better either

"Run, run, run!" Darius yelled back at us as we ran through a series of bushes. I leapt over a log and checked behind me for the others. Sammy and Brooklynn were helping Yasmina limp her way across the ground.

"Is the Parasaurolophus still behind us?" Brooklynn asked.

Kenji, who was at the back of the group, checked behind him and saw the Parasaurolophus right behind him. Suddenly the trees shook violently and a huge head exploded out and snapped at the Parasaurolophus. "Not any more," Kenji yelled.

"Up ahead," Darius yelled. In front of us was a large log. I jumped over and helped Yasmina over, then anyone else who would take my hand. We crouched behind the log and winced as the sound of crunching bones hit our ears. Darius and I peeked over the log and watched the Parasaurolophus get dragged away from us by the one and only Tyrannosaurus-rex. I crouched back down, Darius followed suite. "It's gone," he said. We all let out a sigh and slumped back, exhausted.

"Why are there so many dinosaurs around?" Kenji said.

"Well it's either your boys charm," Brooklynn said. "Or it's because all the fences are down".

"No offense," Sammy said. "But it's definitely option two".

"Right now, I don't even care," Yasmina said, "I just want a...sandwich, we've haven't had anything to eat since those awful carob bars that Ben...". She realised her mistake. "Oh, right".

Darius hugged his knees and looked down at the floor. The monorail, that was not a good experience for any of us. Ben's terrified face appeared in my mind again. It felt weird to think about, but I swear I can still feel the moment where his grip slipped from mine, the moment where he just vanished forever. Kenji held Ben's door pouch around his waist tightly. We didn't have long to process anything before another roar sounded nearby. We all groaned and stood up, I stumbled against the log but quickly straightened myself up. "We just need somewhere to rest," Sammy said. "I can't keep running like this".

Darius spotted something in the distance. "We don't have to," he gasped, pointing to the tree-line. We followed his finger saw the top of one of the main attractions of the park, the Hammond Creation Lab, where dozens of activities and sneak peeks into upcoming projects was shown to the public, and Main Street was just beyond it. "We can get to Main-Street and there's bound to be food and water and everything else we need, maybe even a phone to call for help".

"Then let's get there," Kenji exclaimed. "What are we waiting for?"

The entire place was a dump. It looked like a war-zone, like several huge animals had battled it out to the death. I took the lead in walking down the street, looking left and right at the shattered shops and windows. I looked back and saw that no-one else was following me. Darius was staring at building that had been completely brought down with Kenji at his side.

"Some kind of...fight took place here," Darius analysed. "From the looks of it, I'm thinking the T-rex and...something bigger?"

"The Indominus-rex," Brooklynn said as she looked over the edge of the protective fence and into the Mosasauras pen, except the fence had been completely destroyed, one wrong move and she could fall in. Her hand flew to her mouth and she stepped back and pointed at what was in the water. "I don't think we need to worry about it anymore...or what's left of it".
