_________
A week past and the group made the prison more like home. They fixed it up as much as they could. Hershel was up and moving in crutches. Delilah and Shane grew closer throughout the week, helping everyone with the prison. Delilah had shifts up in the watch tower that alternated. The group had the most hope they had in a long time.
Delilah helped Lori and Maggie balance Hershel up on the crutches. The first time he got up with his one leg. Delilah smiled while he started to use the crutches and got out of his cell.
"Well, would you look at that...you're not a prisoner anymore." Delilah joked and Hershel laughed.
The three of them escorted Hershel outside into the courtyard. Everyone outside watched him walking with his new crutches.
"All right, Hershel!" Glenn cheered, getting shushed by Rick and Shane. Delilah waved down at Daryl. Both Shane and Daryl waved back. Daryl kind of gave Shane a side eye and Shane shrugged at him. Delilah scoffed at the two and focused on the small group next to her.
Beth and Maggie were both excited about Hershel and his crutches. Lori was glad he'd be there for the baby when it comes.
"Ready to race Hershel?" Carl asked jokingly.
"Give me a few days and I'll take you on." Hershel told him and Delilah smiled. The excitement was spoiled when a loud alarm filled the courtyard. Delilah, out of instinct ducked down. She looked up and Rick, Shane, and Daryl were running as fast as they could, pointing behind her.
Delilah whipped her head around and walkers were filling the courtyard. Hershel and Beth locked themselves in a doorway. Delilah grabbed Carl and ran towards Lori and Maggie. They went into the tombs and shut the door. Walkers were filling the tombs.
Delilah led them through the halls, trying her best not to run into walkers. Soon they were surrounded both ways and Carl opened the nearest door. Delilah helped shut it. They were now stuck in the boiler room.
"Those alarms-" Delilah stared before Lori shouted out in pain. Lori had her hand on her stomach.
"Lori?" Maggie asked, worryingly.
"The baby's coming now. I have to push." Lori exclaimed and Delilah's eyes went wide.
"What? Why now?" Delilah exclaimed in panic. Lori supported herself on a couple poles in the room.
"Help me." Maggie told her and Delilah nodded, not knowing what to do. Delilah helped pull Lori's pants down.
"I have to push!" Lori said, in pain. She started to push and blood started running down her leg. Maggie looked at her hand with the blood on it.
"There's something wrong." Maggie said and they helped Lori lay down. They both helped Lori down on the floor.
"You see my old c-section scar?" She asked both of them. Delilah lifted her shirt and saw the scar on the surface of her skin. Maggie started shaking her head.
"Carl has a knife." Lori told them and Carl passed Maggie the knife, tears running down the boy's face.
"Lori, I-" Maggie's voice cracked. Lori looked at them, sweet dripping off her forehead.
"It's the only way." She told the two. Delilah couldn't say anything. Mainly because she didn't know what to say. They were trapped inside a room with walkers outside. They have to cut open a pregnant women and preform a c-section in front of her son. She didn't know what to say.
Lori started saying her goodbye to Carl. Delilah felt so bad for him. He was about to see his mom get cut open.
"Carl, baby. I don't want you to be scared, okay? This is what I want. This is right. Now you take care of your daddy for me, alright? And your little brother or sister, you take care of them." Lori cried with Carl hovering over her. She had her hand on his cheek
"You're gonna be fine, you're gonna beat this world, I know you will. You are smart and you are strong and you are so brave. And I love you." Lori's voice started to crack. Delilah wiped tears off her cheek and put her hand on Maggie's shoulder.
"You gotta do what's right, baby. You promise me you will always do what's right. So if it feels wrong, don't do it, alright? If it feels easy, don't do it, don't let the world spoil you. You're so good. My sweet boy." Lori forced out the words between every cry.
"The best thing I ever did. I love you." Lori told him and Carl cried harder and went down to hug her.
Carl backed away and Maggie knew what was next. The two girls looked at each other and back at Lori. Lori nodded at the two.
"It's okay, take care of Shane for me, Delilah." Lori told her and Delilah nodded, tears streaming down her face.
"Goodnight, love." Lori said and Maggie took a deep breath before slicing open her stomach. Lori's screams roared in Delilah's ears and she watched her face relax and slip away in peace.
"Okay I feel the baby." Maggie said, sniffling from the tears.
"I need your help to pull it out." Maggie told Delilah and she quickly put her hand inside and felt the baby.
Maggie and Delilah pulled it out and Carl gave Maggie his jacket to wrap it up in. Delilah noticed the baby was a girl. At first the baby was silent. But then it forced out a cry. Maggie got up weakly with the baby. Delilah looked down at Lori and closed her eyes.
"I'll do it." Carl said, blankly.
"Carl, I can do it." Delilah said, trying to get the kid to agree.
"No, she's my mom." Carl cried. Delilah sighed and let him walk past. She met with Maggie by the door and waited for Carl. A couple seconds later Carl quickly walked past them.
The four of them made their way through the halls silently, going the way they came. They went through the door to the courtyard. They were met with the whole group's eyes.
Rick turned around slowly when he heard a baby. Shane's eyes went right to the baby when they walked out. It felt like time stopped. Maggie walked into Glenn's arms with the baby. Delilah had Lori's blood on her hands. She looked over at Shane with tears in her eyes.
Rick dropped the axe in his hand. He looked at Carl and started crying. He fell to the ground. Delilah closed her eyes and cried. Daryl went over to her and hugged her. She cried into his chest. Shane stood there in silence, staring at the ground, emotionless.
Rick got up and grabbed his axe up off the ground. He stormed through the door to the tombs. People tried to stop him but he wouldn't listen.
Carl lost his mom, Rick lost his mind.
