I Am Deaf
~ by Grace Garand
I breathe the same air,
I bleed the same way;
I can feel the same things,
Yet you still say the things you say.
Maybe I can't hear,
Maybe you can.
However different we are,
I am proud of who I am.
I get lost in the beat,
I can lose track of time,
And I'm living my best life,
Whenever I sign.
Implant or no,
Voices off or on,
Unique or the same,
We all sing our own song.
Maybe you hear,
Maybe I don't.
You may think you are better,
But I promise I won't.
I believe we can make this work,
Do you believe we can live the dream?
I offer my hand to you,
Can we be on the same team?
I am capable,
I am strong,
I can be right,
And I can be wrong,
Please let this soak in,
Two individuals need not a ref,
I am human,
I am Deaf.
A/N- I'm not actually deaf but I wrote this for my ASL class a little while ago.
"It's not just a hearing world, it's not a white's world, it's not a man's world; it's we are all in this world together." ~Harlan Lawson Lane
