3:00 pm, End of the Work Day
POV: Narrator
The Newsies all gathered in Jack's office. He silenced them all before explaining what was to happen. The Newsies decided to call off St. Patrick's Day this year because of the virus because of the large crowds and hold a virtual concert, but they wouldn't call off their annual vacation. "Now this year, we's staying at a house called the 1 Magnolia Moon. This year, thankfully it won't be a long drive on the isle, it's right off the bridge. I already assigned rooms like we's do every year, you'se find out when we get there. Other than that, It'll be the same as every year. Now, I hope ya got ya bags packed because we's are now leaving for the Newsies' Retreat!" The newsies cheered and immediately began loading the Newsiemobile.
Every year, they would travel in the "Newsiemobile" which was a luxurious RV purchased by them a few years back. They would travel to the Newsies' Retreat House, just outside Wilkes-Barre PA, to have dinner at Red Lobster and rest for the night after a long day at work. It was usually a 9-hour drive down to Emerald Isle, but sometimes earlier, depending on traffic. Along the way, they passed by Gettysburg, which they would later visit on the drive back, and also passed by Hershey Park, which they went to during the summer. They would also stop and eat at a Sonic in VA. They would then stop and eat at McCall's Buffet in Goldsboro, NC, and then continue their drive to the Isle.
By 3:30 pm, everyone was ready to hit the road for the Newsies' Retreat House. The Newsies just left the Sky Luxury Apartments, where they lived and they packed up the remainder of their belongings after leaving the New York Times building and were on their way to Wilkes-Barre. The rest who did not live there, like Jack, Davey, Race, and many more already had their belongings.
Just after they went under the Lincoln Tunnel, the gas notification went off. There was a large groan among them before Davey, who was sitting next to Jack in the passenger seat, looked up the nearest gas station on the Waze app. "Look, there's an Exxon up here after we cross the Hudson down on Park Avenue!" Davey said. "A'right then, we gotta make a quick stop here boys," Jack announced. Once they parked and the Newsiemobile was being fueled up by Jack, the Newsies began playing "Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mouse, peed in his house." It is quite a ridiculous game, which is why Jack went to always fill up the gas. Most of the games were made up by Race. Jack could hear the Newsies shout colors of all sorts while playing, and he rolled his eyes after he was done.
They found a strange woman getting out of her car at the gas station doing a series of strange yoga or butterfly poses. "What the heck is that lady doin'?" Racetrack said. "Who knows, looks like she's trying to stretch or something!" said Davey. The lady then began kicking her legs back and forth while sitting on the edge of the driver's seat. "Hey Lady, what do ya think ya doin'??" shouted Racetrack from outside the Newsiemobile, then Davey began to record her on his iPhone 12 Pro Max. "Stop recording me or else I WILL be contacting the Police!" the lady shouted back, as she headed towards the camera. "Aww, Go to Hell, Karen!" Racetrack retorted. The lady ran inside the gas station store out of fury. Davey marked this as the 4th "Karen" encounter this year in his journal while sighing. He then proceeded to upload the video he had recorded to YouTube. Jack had heard all of the commotions outside, but he did not care. The Newsiemobile was on the road once again.
To fill up time in the approximately two hour and thirty-minute drive, the Newsies did all sorts of things. Blink and Mush got in the habit of recording TikToks, Davey read his book about the Civil War, and Spot and Race played Roblox on a game called "Pilfering Pirates". If this was just enough for them, then who knows what they would do to pass away the boredom for a long 9-hour drive the next day.
