Kelson's Beach House, Emerald Isle, NC, around 1:00 pm
POV: Narrator
After a successful first meetup with Kelson, who was previously referred to as the mysterious neighbor by the Newsies, they had finally planned a second (and third!) event together. As Davey walked out of the house last, Kelson whispered to Davey "I'll keep in touch." while patting him on the back of his shoulder. Jake also said goodbye to Davey and gave him a hug when nobody was looking.
The Newsies' Beach House, Emerald Isle, NC, around 3:00 pm
Davey was reading in his room when he had gotten a text message notification. It was from Kelson.
Kelson:
Meet me at my place, tonight at 9:00 pm sharp. We need to talk about something. Come alone, and bring a swimsuit. I have Spot distracted with something then, so he will no longer be an issue.
Davey:
Sure, I'll be there. See you then.
What could he possibly want to talk about that seemed so important, yet oddly strange and concerning? For the rest of the day, Dave's pondered what the subject was about. Along with that, he also worried about what Spot might have told other people, and most importantly Jack, since he is the only person who had the power to fire Davey, worst case scenario. He decided he would have to talk to Kelson about this since he really didn't have anyone else to talk to about this. Suddenly, he received another text message notification.
(410) 626-7372:
Hey, Davey, this is Jake. Kelson gave me your number. I was just thinking about you a lot lately and know that with Spot and everything, you were probably under a lot of angst. Come on over right now if you feel like it, I'm the only one home right now.
Davey:
Thanks, I'll be there in a few minutes.
He immediately added Jake as a contact. He decided to change into something else and reapply his fragrance. Davey immediately felt better. Before heading out, he made sure Spot was not watching him. He then ran through the french door out back and decided to sneak over through the shrubbery so he would not be easily visible going out on the deck.
Davey:
Do you mind if I use the back door?
Jake:
Sure, coming right now.
Then, Jake welcomed Davey in and immediately took him upstairs to his bedroom. He was dressed informally than earlier, in a button shirt with beach art and shorts. Although they both had previously made sure that Spot wasn't watching, while they were inside, they both knew he probably was still aware something was going on. Together, Davey and Jake closed the curtains from Jake's bedroom so Spot could not be spying on them. Davey sat on the couch in the bedroom while Jake sat on his bed.
"So, what's up?" Davey asked. "I'm worried about you, Dave. The whole Spot thing, having to keep a secret from your whole family basically, how are you taking all this?" Jake asked. "I'm worried what Spot will do to me. He can have my career ruined, and I don't know what I will do if that happens. He threatened to tell Jack, who has the power to have me fired." Davey let out. "Come on, Dave! Jack wouldn't possibly fire you because of something personally related, and just because you met someone without the other Newsies? That's ridiculous, he can't do anything to you." Jake said. "He has dirt against me, and I don't know why. Spot always finds a way." Davey responded. "Come on, if that happens, you know me and Kelson got you covered. I promise, your career won't be ruined." Jake promised.
Suddenly, Davey began to cry. This caused Jake to immediately come over by his side. Davey has not cried in a very long time, probably a couple of years. "I don't know what to do..." he was able to make out. "You know...I'm not one to spill secrets, but just to make sure you know I am keeping my promise," Jake was about to reveal a big secret Kelson didn't want to reveal to just Davey, Sarah, and Les alone, until later. "Our company we own? It's CNN. That's what I almost said that one night, and what Kelson wanted to talk to you about tonight, he's the President. I also rarely tell anyone this as well, but I'm the CEO of Sears as well. That's my last name."
Davey looked up immediately, shocked. "Oh god, what did I just say...uh, promise me that you won't tell anyone, please." Jake staggered. "Sure, a promise for a promise, Jake Sears." He stopped crying. "If something does happen to you and you end up being cut from The NY Times, we can get their reputation ruined, and better yet I can offer you a job. Just try and act like I never told you anything, okay?" They hugged each other, Jake gave Davey a few tissues, and then he proceeded to go back to the Beach house. He was still worried Spot would apprehend him, again.
