YOONGI POV
Rust and reek.
It seeped through the hull of the ship, like mould growing along dark corners. Turning at the end of the hallway, I came face to face with a hunk of metal--a cargo hold entrance, one of many--that held more than just crates of cans and fuel.
This was the cell of that bastard.
A dry cough mixed with the hum of engines as I released the dead bolt and slipped into the hold, eyes immediately squinting to gauge the dim interior. But Jung was not hard to find, even while being cast in shadow.
There was the blood to thank for that.
It was old, I knew, but blood all the same. I had drew it the night I had found y/n, overwhelmed with outrage at the two of them together, running from the world.
Running from me.
And now, here the perpetrator was, at my feet and in chains.
"Ah, mister Min," the gangster croaked as I came to stand over him, a slight smile parting his dried and cracked lips. "Did you come here to give me my medicine?"
My fists clenched and it took everything in me not to slug him right there, venting the frustration I had incurred over the questions that had tormented me for so many weeks now, eroding my conscious.
What was so appealing about this man to y/n?
What made her think about him when he had never been there for her until now? When he had caused so much grief in her heart and put her in danger?
"You must be thirsty," I said instead, suppressing every single stab of jealousy that threatened to derail my love for y/n.
But that bastard was as chill as ever.
"I could use a drink or two," Jung admitted, letting out a raspy chuckle. "Got any Merlot?"
Typical.
"Water for now," I answered, holding an opened bottle out. He took it without hesitation, downing it before coughing again, hacking spit.
"Where is my y/n-a?" he asked after a minute more of drinking, meeting my eyes with that same desperate look of the past three days. "You haven't lost her, have you?" Glancing at his chains, he uncurled his fingers weakly, as if to show his efforts to find her. "I know we're not going back to Korea. But...my gummy bear has a sensitive stomach and can't--"
*cough*
"--eat a lot of spicy foods. You should--"
*cough*
"--make sure she's eating."
His eyes closed.
"Until I wrap my hands around her. Make sure..."
His voice faded then, losing whatever strength remained after all the suffering.
And I internally lost my confidence.
"The Chinese government is waiting at port to arrest you," I managed to begin, standing up and watching the pathetic man deplore silently. "Your charges are great, Jung. Not just there, but in Korea too. With a life in prison awaiting you...how will you take care of anyone, let alone have a future with them?"
Silence fell over the room, but I did not let it linger.
"Y/n-a....the girl you claim to love," I continued, throat catching just a little, "I have also come to love her. Knowing she cared for you, and that you took care of her before I could..." Inhaling, I prepared myself to utter those words, even though I did not want to. Even though they boiled my very blood.
"I'll set both of you free," I said at last, heart thudding. "No one will find you, not even the authorities. Go on with your life, Jung. Don't suffer and make y/n-a cry."
The gangster's reaction was instant.
Raising his head, two brown eyes looked straight up at me, through those greasy locks of hair and filthy face, smeared with dirt, blood, and brine.
"You....you're joking," he spoke, voice a tremble. "You're heartless, Min. I know that. You would never do such a thing. You're like me--bloodthirsty, cruel, broken...." Glancing away, he shot a careless scowl at the floor. "I don't believe you. You're plotting me, to please your own sick ego and laugh in my face. And--"
"You're wrong."
Hoseok looked back at me then, piercingly.
"What?"
Tensing, I forced myself to look at him, wanting so badly to run from this room.
"I'm not here to deceive you Jung," I said. "And I would never trick y/n just so I could fulfill my own ego. Y/n-a...." My face turned to hide the emotion. "She's too precious for that. She's more than me--more than any selfish pride of a man. I don't have that in me--i don't know anything but her. Nothing but her. But..."
And here, I turned back, letting coldness retake my features.
"But I am heartless, as you said. I hate you, as much as I ever did. So it is for y/n that I'm letting you go. For y/n that I tolerate and allow you to eke out your life, without being in danger. And for y/n that when I unlock these chains and watch her run into your arms, you'll look into those innocent eyes and tell her that you never loved her. That she fell for lies, slipping casually from your mouth as you tried to incur a slave contract from her father to expand your business. Saving her from Lay and running away was a ploy to salvage the marriage. Promising to care for her--all of the things you said before I came--were lies."
Jung's mouth bore no smile now. Soundlessly, he let his eyes lose their light, let his head fall.
"And if I refuse? To tell her these things?" he mumbled at last, the defeat in his voice unmistakeable. "Then what?"
Reaching in my pocket, I extracted the sheet of white paper, faxed just this morning from mainland communicae.
Dropping it in his lap, I turned and began walking towards the exit, toxic power coursing through my veins.
"Your death sentence, Jung. By hanging."
