It's time. You're sitting in the passenger seat of Newt's car squeezing his hand. You've left the boys back at the motel so it's just the two of you for this. You take a deep breath.

"I'm ready."

"(Y/n), are you sure? We're not in a rush we can wait as long as you need," Newt's voice is full of concern, but you're tired of waiting.

"No, it's time," Newt pulls you in for a kiss before you get out of the car and head into the diner.

It's not very busy, as it is already pretty late, but there are still a couple of women working and you're struck with the realization that you might not recognize your own mother. Your memories of your childhood were often fuzzy, and you hadn't tried to picture your mother's face in a long time, and your father burned any pictures of her a long time ago.

Luckily, Newt seems to have everything under control, he steps up to the hostess, a younger girl who looked to be in her twenties and asked for a table in your mothers section, and to let her know she had visitors. You're led away to a booth in the corner, thankfully semi-secluded, and you and Newt are given waters before it's time to wait.

You fiddle with your straw wrapper nervously, and Newt's hand is rested reassuringly on your thigh, but it's not doing much to settle the nerves you feel, and frankly you doubt there is anything that could soothe you right now.

Only a couple of minutes pass before a woman walks up to the table, and you instantly recognize your mother. Her hair is a different color, and she is years older, but the remembrance still hits you hard, and you feel like you can't breathe, Newt grabs your hand in his and squeezes, giving you a soft smile.

"Hi guys, what can I do for you today?" She looks between the two of you for a moment, clearly trying to figure out who the two of you are before Newt speaks.

"My name is Newt and this here is (Y/n)," he says simply.

"Oh, (Y/n)," your mother finally looks at you with recognition in her eyes, and you can see the beginnings of tears forming, but she makes no movement towards you. "I didn't recognize you, I haven't seen you since..." she begins to fidget uncomfortably. "Does he- does he know where I am?" The words come out in almost a whisper, and her eyes dart around the room and to the door.

"He got a life sentence actually, he'll die in prison," You say shortly, and your mother visibly relaxes.

"That's why we're here actually," Newt says after a pause that made it clear neither of you were going to talk, "(Y/n) is about to be considered a ward of the state and be forced into foster care unless we could locate family to take her in."

Your mother glances to the kitchen behind her, "Give me three minutes and I can sit down with you guys for a second. Do you want anything to drink? Or I can put an order in for food, on the house?" You shake your head, and she disappears to the back.

"How are you doing, Love?" Newt asks as soon as she's gone, and you take a second to think. Your hands are shaking, and the room is spinning, and you feel like you're going to throw up.

"She didn't recognize me," you say, unable to come up with anything else, and Newt pulls you in.

"I know, I'm sorry." You stay like that for a few more minutes before she slides in the booth across from you.

"Okay, I'm sure you have questions, but we'll take them one at a time."

"Why didn't you take me?" The burning question bursts out before you can stop it, and your mother flinches almost imperceptibly before answering.

"I needed to get out. He hadn't hurt you, and I couldn't afford you," it stings to hear the truth, that you were simply abandoned, but it's nothing you hadn't expected, but Newt tenses next to you at her answer. She keeps talking, "I only had a little saved up, and I needed to get away from town and a kid is just too hard for that."

"What about now?" Newt can't seem to hold himself back from asking, "Could you move back and get custody? Or could (Y/n) stay here with you?" Your mother sighs.

"I'm afraid I can't do that. I'm barely scraping by, and I don't have the space for another person, I'm so sorry (Y/n)." Tears spring to your eyes, unable to stop them, but Newt is seething next to you.

"How could you?" Newt's still rage in his eyes is unwavering as he stares your mother down. "You knew she wouldn't be safe and you just abandoned your own kid with a monster. You could have called someone, protected her. You think he didn't hurt her?" Your mother flinches, unable to look you in the eyes, but Newt continues. "You're an idiot if you thought she would be safe, you abandoned her then and you're abandoning her now. You're selfish."

"Im sorry for what happened, but I have to get back to work," was all your mother said before sliding out of the booth and disappearing again. The tears are streaming down your face now, and Newt turns to you.

"What can I do?" He pulls you into a hug and you cry into his shoulder for a minute before leaning away.

"Let's get out of here," You say, wiping the tears best you can before you head to the car.

"Would you like to go for a drive? Or do you want to go back to the motel?" Newt asks once you get outside.

"Let's drive for a while, clear my head," you respond, and you climb into the passenger seat. Newt heads off down the main road towards the edge of the town. You ride in silence for a minute, Newt constantly finding some way to be touching you reassuringly. You're not sure what to feel, as now there's no hope keeping you from Foster care, and you know that can be bad. You begin to cry again as the feeling of abandonment hits you, but Newt hands you a tissue and squeezes your thigh as you wipe your eyes.

"How are you doing?" Newt finally asks after a while, and you pause before giving your answer, having given it some thought throughout the car ride.

"I'm upset of course, but I'm not surprised, we all new this was a slim chance. But I've had a terrible family my whole life, and I've never been able to count on anyone the way I can count on you," you squeeze Newt's hand, "Screw her, you're what I need."

"I love hearing that, (Y/n), and I will do whatever I can for you. I love you."

"I love you too, Newt," you lean over and kiss his cheek, to which he smiles.

You drive out of town for a minute more before turning back around to the motel. Once Newt parks the car, he leans in to kiss you passionately, and you kiss him back, enjoying the feel of his lips on yours. His hands begin to wander, finding their way under your shirt on your back, and you're desperate for more. You and Newt head up the stairs, your hands all over each other, kissing passionately, and once you get upstairs, you fall tangled in the sheets together, and that's where you spend the night.
