Although I really wanted to leave, I found myself staring at Dean as he finished unlocking his bike.

Stupid handsome white British guy, I thought to myself. Ugh. Fuck you and your perfect, absolutely flaw-free mindless existence. Imagine not having your personality be irrevocably changed after living with anxiety and self hatred for years. Couldn't be me.

"So," Dean said, "Where are you headed, eh?"

"Oh, just to get vaccinated," I replied.

"Really? What a coincidence, so am I!" He exclaimed.

Oh, fuck.

"Want a ride?" he asked, grinning up at me.

I started to feel my face grow hot, and I had to step back and collect myself. I became relieved that I was still wearing the mask.

"What?" I stuttered.

Is he...making fun of me?

I narrowed my eyes. Did Marie tell him I'm gay?

"Yeah, it's not the most comfortable, but if you hold on tight, the two of us can probaby squeeze in," he replied, gesturing towards the bike.

Oh.

It appears I have misunderstood his intentions.

I took a deep breath and tried to look calm.

"No, thanks," I said. "I'm fine walking."

"Are you sure?" Dean asked cheekily, grinning up at me.

"I..." I tried to push any adulterous or inappropriate thoughts from my mind. "I don't like bikes," I replied. "I get motion sickness easily." I frowned, noticing that his mask was still hanging around his neck. What a big, huge, mindless idiot.

"Well, alright." Dean said, still smiling at me. "Let me know if you ever change your mind."

"I don't think I'll need to, but thanks," I said drily. He didn't seem to notice, as he busied himself with pulling up his mask around his face and adjusting himself in the bikeseat. Once he was done, he grinned at me one more time, waved and zoomed off, pedaling surprisingly quickly.

I shifted awkwardly in the spot where I was standing, watching the traffic lights turn red after he finished crossing.

All of a sudden, I felt irritated. I had intended for today to be a leisurely and slow walk, but now I felt extremely annoyed by the thought of that prick showing up to the vaccination site before me. I grumbled to myself, and mashed the silver crosswalk button as if it owed me money.

The other pedestrians watched me silently, perhaps questioning the sanity of a man so vehemently intent on repeatedly touching a potential exposure risk in the middle of a global pandemic. I glared back at them, daring them to challenge me, but nobody said anything. Without another word, the traffic lights changed back to green, and I speed-walked my way to the sidewalk before anyone else had so much as taken one step.
