"Can you do me a favor?"
It wasn't fair, the way he turned towards me and asked. I wanted to unbuckle my seatbelt and jump out the passenger car door. I began to regret sitting shotgun and instead wished that I had picked a seat in the back, just so I wouldn't have to face him when he turned those puppy dog eyes on me.
"Eyes on the road!" I stammered, and made to move away. Dean immediately turned back to face the road, but one of his hands fumbled blindly towards me, trying to get some purchase on whatever they could find. Before I knew it, he had grabbed onto my thigh.
Immediately, my brain short circuited.
This stupid Brit is going to be the death of me, I swear!
"Hey, both hands on the wheel!" I roared, and Dean immediately grabbed the wheel and swerved again. We narrowly missed hitting a truck that honked loudly at us as it changed lanes. Dean and I both let out a sigh of relief, then I turned to glare at him.
"Okay, so what is this all about? Can you please get ahold of yourself?" I snapped, annoyed.
"Sorry, sorry!" Dean replied, steadying himself. I mentally moved him off my list of 'people who are reliable drivers.' "Can you...can you promise you'll still say yes, no matter how weird it is?"
I raised an eyebrow. "I'm not putting anyone's toes in my mouth, if that's what you're asking of me."
"No! No, no!" Dean screamed, panicked. "I just mean...I..." He sighed and pushed his hair out of his face, and I felt my chest flutter. "I really appreciated it when you were there for me...back at the clinic."
"Oh. The vax clinic?" I blinked. "That was nothing."
"No, no, I was so glad you were there," Dean breathed, "Could you come with me to get my second shot? Please?"
He turned back to face me again, and I began to wish for some sunglasses. It appeared my heart was not as soulless and unfeeling as I would have liked it to be.
"Why don't you ask Marie?" I asked, facing away as my cheeks began to heat up. "I thought you guys were all about trusting each other with weird stuff-"
Dean shook his head. "Please, you're the only one I feel comfortable doing this with," and I almost dove into the backseat out of embarrassment. "Please, just this once?"
I curled my fingers into a fist and tried to steady myself. But it was kind of hard to breathe evenly with him staring intently at me. "Can we stop off at Hmart once we reached Tacoma?" I asked, even though I wasn't particularly hungry. Dean nodded. "And after that, I'll drive." He nodded again, eager to please. "Fuck. Just...let me collect my thoughts. Please."
Honestly it's not that deep. Just go with him to the clinic, get booster shots, and you're done. Why are you dragging this out?
"Sure, I'll come with you," I sighed. Dean immediately perked up and smiled brightly.
