After my long day out with Dean, I decided I had had enough of being Dave. I still hadn't thought of a name for her yet, but I figured I would probably think of one eventually.
Although I had only gone out with the jade bracelet once, I had been itching to put it back on all day after getting vaccinated. Whenever Leo asked me why I seemed so moody or sluggish, I told him it was because of the vaccination side effects, but really I just wanted to be left on my own so I could turn back.
However, Leo had brought his girlfriend Valentina to stay over with us, which meant I needed to remain as Dave, at least until I left the apartment.
"Oh...I thought it was my day to cook breakfast?" I yawned and blinked, staring blearily at Leo while I shuffled about in my pajamas.
Leo hummed pleasantly, brushing his curly hair out of his eyes. "I know," he said. "But, I just thought it'd be nice to make you guys something."
"Oh. Thank you," I said awkwardly, trying my best to show that I meant it. My family never really ate breakfast together, as Dad was always gone for work in the morning, so I was used to eating it in the car on the way to school. But, I was curious about meeting Valentina, so I decided to stay and wait.
I helped him to fry up some bacon and runny eggs, the way I personally preferred them. I always cooked with a lot of garlic salt and onion powder and I usually had a yogurt container full of onion shoots, something that my mom had with her growing up. I watched as the reddish brick-brown bacon slices sizzled in the pan, inhaling the scent while I tried to adjust to the early hours.
Leo bustled around, grabbing plates and forks and washing dishes and firing up the rice cooker for me. By the time we had finished, we had poached eggs, slices of crispy brown bacon, and warm toast dripping in butter and coconut jam. Once the rice was done, I also prepared some simple rice congee, a staple breakfast food of my mom's, to which I added salted fish, steamed lap xuong (also known as chinese sausage), flaky salt and green scallions. We also had half a jar left of the ridiculously creamy full-milk yogurt that Leo had purchased last time we went grocery shopping, that I swore was really heavy cream in a yogurt container.
"This is a bit extravagant," I said, staring at the dish with bacon slices, a bowlful of rice congee, and a heaping stack of toast slices, still steaming hotly.
"Is it?" Leo asked absentmindedly. "I was still thinking of making some toasted bagel halves, or maybe some homemade blueberry pancakes..."
"Why don't you ask Valentina first?" I asked, yawning. "God, it's cold," I grumbled.
"Here," Leo handed me his nightrobe. It was thick and fuzzy, and made out of soft microfiber. "Wear this," he said, and walked away to check on his toast.
Leo and I both helped ourselves to the rice congee, eggs, bacon and toast. I smothered my toast in coconut jam and tried not to gag as I watched him spread jammy black vegemite onto his slice. "Mm, have some more yogurt," Leo said, pushing the now 75% empty glass jar towards me. "We should finish it up before we go grocery shopping."
