The next morning, when I woke up, I knew immediately that fall had officially begun. Instead of warm sunlight, harsh grey light spilled in through the windows, and I could hear the soft sound of rain hitting the panes. Outside, the world had turned wet and rusty, the trees already showing some of their autumnal coloring.
I stared mournfully at the sundress that I had worn out yesterday; clearly, I would not be getting much use out of it in the months to come. Gone were the days of warm, sunny weather. Now was the time for layering, and heavy winter coats, and the occasional ear muffs. Groaning, I pushed myself out of bed and began to dress for work. Unable to find my usual neutral black mask, I fished around my desk drawers until I found the old purple masks that UW had sent me.
"I know I must have a raincoat in here somewhere," I grumbled.
Fall had arrived in Seattle. As I walked outside wearing my raincoat and sweater, water pooled and formed cool muddy puddles all around my feet. The sidewalk was soaked through and covered in a carpet of wet brown leaves that had already been smooshed together until they formed a faux rug.
The dew-covered trees dripped both water and leaves. I ignored them and continued to walk without putting up my hood, tolerating the cold wet drizzle that kept dripping onto my hair. Buses sped around nearby, constantly spraying the pedestrians with muddy brown water. Everyone seemed focused on only getting to their destination as quickly as possible.
