In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, I packed and re-packed several times. Just when I thought I was finished, I realized I should probably bring a gift for Marie. Immediately afterwards, I began to question if it might be weird to give a gift to someone else's girlfriend, regardless of how long we'd known each other. Perhaps I could simply give gifts to both Dean and Marie. But that might come off even weirder, like I was trying to proposition them.
I decided to just get them a bottle of wine. They could open it and share it together. That should be enough. Satisfied, I walked into the kitchen and made myself some Vietnamese coffee as a treat. I made a mental note to run to the store later and buy myself some more Cafe Du Monde and Carnation milk.
"Is everything alright?" I asked Leo as I walked in, holding a glass of plain hot water and lemon. He accepted it and slumped over his desk, groaning and refusing to look at his own code.
"Yeah it's all good...just gotta clean up this mess my partner left us in," he mumbled.
"Oh. Group project?"
"Yes."
He didn't really seem in the mood to talk about it.
I glanced quickly at the state of his room. Valentina hadn't been over for a few days, since she had more assignments to work on. I leaned over and poked him in the shoulder. He sat up sharply.
"When was the last time you showered?"
"Yesterday morning," Leo mumbled.
"Don't you normally shower every day?"
"Don't have to."
"You are giving depression vibes. Get out and go wash your hair."
"I don't have to wash it," Leo whined. "My hair has naturally low porosity!"
"Yeah yeah. Get up," I nudged him with my foot. He kicked back at me. "Valentina's going to be here tomorrow, you don't want her to see you looking like a slob, do you?"
"Are you drinking coffee?"
"Yes?" I replied, taking another sip.
Leo groaned. "At this time of the night?"
"Yes. Do you have a problem with that?"
"No," he grumbled. "But you do realize you are probably going to fuck up your sleep cycle."
"Not anymore than you will if you don't shower and go to sleep soon," I replied.
"Fair enough." With that, he got up and left. Once he was gone, I tidied his room a bit and headed to bed. As I pulled the duvet over my shoulders, I listened to the sound of the shower being turned on and went to sleep assured that Leo would be okay.
