Leo said he was feeling hungry, so we decided to pass over to Uwajimaya next. I grabbed a shopping cart and tagged along behind him and Valentina. Valentina immediately noticed the roasted nuts vendor and asked him for a cone, intrigued.

"Oh, these are the good stuff," Leo told us. Valentina offered me a handful and I took two, chewing on them slowly.

Upon being unleashed into the fresh produce section, Leo's inner cordon bleu was activated. He immediately began sniffing and squeezing fruits and vegetables, checking them for wax coatings and squinting at tomatoes to ensure that they were the perfect hue of scarlet red for his culinary concoctions.

"What are you going to do with those gingko nuts?" I asked.

"Hm. Not sure. These ones aren't very good, though," he muttered. "Too small." He then began perusing the citrus section, in search of the perfect orange.

Valentina looked around, noticing the second level. "There's nothing special up there," I told her. "Just employee-only rooms and stuff, I think."

Leo finally made his decision and began loading our cart with bulbous, brightly-colored sumo oranges and a few red-netting bags of mandarins. Valentina almost chuckled. "Do we really need that many oranges?"

"In a pandemic? Absolutely," Leo replied. "Vitamin C."

"But we're all vaccinated."

"Doesn't mean the chance of getting the virus is 0%," Leo retorted. "Anyways, it's always good to have some mandarins around the house."

"What about some blood oranges?" Valentina asked.

Leo made a face. "Not a fan," he replied, unimpressed.

"You can't just peel them and eat them," I explained. "You have to cut them and slurp them. Too much work."

We also bought a few bunches of grapes, a pound of lychee, and a handful of white peaches, which were satisfyingly round and fragrant. Valentina wanted to buy some watermelons, but Leo insisted that the ones at Trader Joe's were far superior (as well as cheaper).
