"Wait, please stop! I think you dropped this," someone yelled after me as we both ran across Red Square like two idiots.
The thing about Red Square is, the red bricks are not really like normal bricks. For one, they're all polished and smooth, and they never absorb the rain; additionally, the square itself is not completely flat. There's areas where you can find small indentations in the brick ground, where skateboarders will gleefully tread water and splash each other. Rumor has it, when Red Square was constructed, the architects did it with the intention of making it easy to hose down any protesters who might show up.
Another thing to know is that Red Square, when wet, is extremely slippery. Naturally, I tripped on my feet and almost faceplanted, except I managed to land on my hands. I panted heavily, trying to calm down and stop my heart from racing so quickly.
The person chasing me stopped running and stood next to me. I breathed in and out, trying hard not to get an asthma attack. It had been years since the last time I used an inhaler, but that wasn't much comfort at the moment.
"Here."
I looked up and then frowned.
It was Jason.
Ugh, not this guy again.
"What?" I asked, annoyed.
Jason held out a purple lanyard, and I gasped, reaching for it. It was my lanyard, with my stupid Husky Card that said DAVID on it. I grabbed at it, but Jason stepped back and held it just out of my reach.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" I demanded.
After a second, I realized maybe provoking him was not a smart idea, but he just smirked and held the lanyard behind his back mischievously. I tried to stand up and tripped again. Jason watched me groan and rub my knee, trying not to cry from the pain.
"Do you want some help getting up, by the way?" He asked.
"No!" I snapped. I attempted to stand and immediately slipped again, this time falling on my butt. "The last thing I need is assistance from you of all people."
"What? Why do you hate me so much? You don't even know me," he whined.
"I don't know, why would I ever want to?" I retorted.
"Well, why don't you give me a chance? We could get some coffee together."
What an absolute trashbag! I seethed. His girlfriend just broke up with him NOT AN HOUR AGO for being rude to me, now he's trying to hit on me?
"No thanks, I don't drink coffee."
"Ok, what do you like then? I can get you something from the Ave," he offered.
I wanted to roll my eyes.
What makes you think I can't get my own drink by myself, huh?
"Is this your boyfriend?" He asked, turning over the Husky Card, and I felt all the blood run out of my face.
"Yes, so what if it is?" I retorted.
"What's his name?"
"I don't know, what's it to you? Now give that back to me."
Jason took it out and started playing with the lanyard, teasing me. "You're really pretty to be with a guy like that," he said, and I felt the urge to bite his face.
Did he just call me UGLY?
"He's better-looking than you," I spat at him, and he laughed.
"Alright, alright I understand. He must be a really lucky guy if he managed to snap up a pretty girl like you."
"Yeah, don't worry, I'll let him know," I rolled my eyes and started walking away. But then I paused and decided I wanted to get a last dig in. "Why don't you go talk to your girlfriend? If you even have one?" I asked, but that only made him laugh again.
"Nah, she's mad at me," he replied, kicking at a puddle of water. It splashed all around him and I stepped back, trying to avoid getting wet.
"Well, then you should go and talk to her again," I replied.
He ignored that. "Hey," he said, "I think I recognize the guy whose photo you have. He works at Suz, doesn't he?"
"Yes," I replied, annoyed but also taken aback that he even recognized me. "But don't you dare say anything to him," I fumed. "Leave him the fuck alone."
"I won't, I won't," he chuckled. "I'm just curious as to how you two...met." I rolled my eyes. "You know, he's my favorite barista. Always makes my drink exactly how I like it."
I narrowed my eyes. "Really? Cause from what he tells me, all you do is bark orders and give him a hard time."
Jason laughed. "Oh, so he's told you about me? I'm flattered," he smiled, and I realized I had made a mistake. "I'll be sure to thank him next time I see him."
I frowned. "What do you mean, thank him? I'm his girlfriend, I'm not going to talk to you ever again," I yelled. "I don't even know who you are."
And with that, I finally walked away.
See if I don't put arsenic in his drink the next time he orders from me!
