It had been so long since I had last used the jade bracelet.
Once I was out, I slipped it on and let out a sigh of relief as I felt my body reset itself. I checked my reflection in a window and ran my fingers through my hair, combing it out. I had been thinking of growing my hair out so I would look more like I did when I wore the bracelet, but I decided it just wouldn't be the same. It was a relief to have long hair again.
I didn't need to change my clothes yet because I had planned to wear out my men's winter clothes, seeing as temperatures had already started to drop. However, it felt wrong to be back in a woman's body and still wearing the bulky, puffy men's jacket that Mom bought me in high school on sale. I tried unzipping it, but it still felt like I was a woman only from the neck up. Reluctantly, I zipped it back up and decided to give myself a new mission; obtain decent winter clothes. If not for Dave, at least for Jade.
From then on, it was a simple task of walking to the mall and browsing about as usual. I had saved up a bit from my barista job, which was fortunate, but I still needed to factor in rent, so I decided to limit myself to only three items.
"Are you looking for something, miss?" A sales assistant asked meekly. I nodded, then realized I was wearing a mask. "Yes, I don't know which one to get," I said aloud, and she smiled.
"Well, that's where I come in," she smiled politely. "These beautiful cropped puffer jackets are super trendy right now, and kind of similar to the one you're wearing right now. What do you think?"
She pointed at a light purple puffer jacket, and I stared at it for a few seconds.
Light purple.
Just like Marie's favorite color.
I shut my eyes, trying hard not to think of Thanksgiving. And driving back home. And watching Dean and Marie together all over again.
"It's not my style," I tried to say as politely as possible. "Sorry, do you have any other recommendations?"
"Sure!" She replied enthusiastically, and started showing me some trench coats. I tried on a pink one that was calling out my name. However, my heart dropped slightly once I checked the price tag.
Oof, that is more than I was planning to budget for the first item, I thought to myself. Might have to just live with this ugly coat for a while just so I can invest in something nicer.
"Sorry, I think I'll have to come back," I apologized, and she laughed nonchalantly.
"That's alright," she replied. "If not a coat, would you like to look at some boots instead?"
I felt a faint flutter in my chest, and I felt myself perk up a bit with interest. The women's shoe department always seemed to me to be full of interesting and glittery things to try on. It always made me think of my aunt's own shoe closet, from back when she was younger, which was filled with golden strappy heels and high boots and sneakers.
