After I finished my plate of food, there was no hiding from Marie anymore

After I finished my plate of food, there was no hiding from Marie anymore.  Dean had already stood up to go talk to Mrs. Pham.  Now it was just me and her.

"Marie," I said slowly, and she snapped her neck around to look at me.  The glare she sent me was cold and withering, and made me recoil slightly.  Behind us, the fireplace roared to life, reminding me of the one back at the Hub.  I used to go there just so I could sit next to it and warm my weather-beaten body with its welcoming flames.

This is the same fireplace where her and Dean were making out last year, I suddenly realized with a jolt.  What a throwback.  Maybe I could one-up them by throwing myself inside next.  That would certainly be one way to rewrite the memory.

Marie hovered close to me, unsure of whether to proceed or turn away again.  I smelled jasmine and lilies.  What kind of shampoo does she use? I wondered.  Or is it a perfume?

"Can...can we talk about this?" I asked quietly.  Maybe she wasn't actually mad at me.  Maybe it was just resting bitch face.

Marie narrowed her eyes.

"About what?" she asked.  "About the fact that you've been avoiding me?  Or the fact you didn't even recognize me just now?" she spat angrily.

Oof, yeah.  She's definitely pissed, I winced.

"I-"

"Forget it, Dave," Marie waved her hand and turned her back on me, her long black hair swishing behind her like a curtain of silk.  I felt a lump form in my throat.  "I understand.  You don't want to see me."  Her voice trembled slightly with anger, and I felt like an absolute piece of shit.  "Don't force yourself."  With that, she began to walk away.

"Marie, wait," I panicked, and she stopped.  I walked up to her slowly, giving her plenty of opportunity to walk away.  "Please, can't we talk about this?" I begged.  "I don't want there to be bad blood between us...I think there's been a misunderstanding," I breathed.

Marie stayed silent.  However, she did turn towards me.  I took a deep breath, trying to find my words.

"I'm sorry," I babbled quietly.  "I haven't seen you in a while, I'll admit," I reached out and instinctively took her hands in mine, the way I used to when we were children.  She jumped slightly and I almost withdrew, worried that I had crossed a boundary.  But she hesitated for a second before quietly squeezing my hands back, as if to affirm that she was with me.  I took a deep breath.

"And I'm sorry for not responding to your calls. I know that I should have. But I genuinely didn't mean to make you feel like I didn't care...it was an honest mistake. You know how...anxious...that I sometimes get," I muttered, letting go of one of her hands to rub the back of my neck awkwardly. She stared at me, not breaking eye contact. I let me hand fall to my side, unsure of how to act with those bright catlike eyes fixed on me.
