Kaleb stared down at the she-wolf that laid in the hospital bed. On top of being extremely malnourished he could see on her exposed skin the many scars, cuts and bruises covering her body. What exactly had she been through he didn't know, but he planned to find out once she woke up. The doctors did their initial examination then pulled her out of the room to get scanned and tested by their modern medical machines. What I couldn't understand was the attachment I had towards her. The moment my eyes saw her bursting out of those trees she became the most fascinating female I have ever laid my eyes on. Then when she was tackled and dragged back to the woods my blood boiled. My wolf stirred and growled in my head. The anger filled me to get to her and ripped the bastard off her and then killed him for touching her.
"Alpha Kaleb," spoke in a soft toned voice.
Her voice pulled me from my thoughts and I looked up to Dr Reynolds. Her Asian Heritage showed with the pale yellowish skin tone. The straight long raven black hair was down and went down to the bottom of her ribcage. She had rectangular glasses that added to her looks. Alot of the males in this pack wanted to be with her but since her mate died she never took on another, solely focusing her work. The curious look in her eyes held a little sadness as she continued.
"So you saved the young female and killed the attacker?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
" How about telling me what her condition is then I'll tell you?"
I stared blankly at her as she stared right back. She was probably use to defiant guests, but me being here was rare and unusual. She sighed.
"Alright."
It's a feat I've come to admire with the mortal wolves, putting others before themselves.
"Alpha Kaleb!" spoke a male voice.
Of course he came to see what was going on, this was his pack. I was just staying for a few generations before moving to another pack to watch over. I looked up to see the amused grin smeared across his face. His mate was close behind looking around for the guest I brought in. I groaned.
"So the heartless Alpha Kaleb saved a female wolf and brought her in to be helped?" Luna Paige asked amused, "So what's so special about her?"
I glared at her in annoyance. Alpha Mark cleared his throat. My attention went to him. His face showed a brief wordless apology before speaking.
"Who's the young female you saved?" He asked nicely.
I sighed. Yeah, who is she? I don't know her name or what pack she is from let alone have a clue on who she could be. I looked him in the eye with a serious face.
"I have absolutely no idea."
They all three stared at me like I did something strange.
"You have no clue who she is? Then why did you save her? You ancients don't tend to step in to save someone without a good reason..." Luna Paige spoke half to herself.
"You don't know? But why?" Alpha Mark questioned.
"I have no idea why either. One minute I see a female come crashing out of the trees and catches my attention the next I see her getting dragged back the direction she came from. My wolf and my blood was boiling and then next thing I know I'm on top of the male beating him to death." I spoke frustrated, it was so unlike an Ancient, unlike me. "I have no clue. I just feel extremely protective of her."
Luna Paige turned to Alpha Mark, mind linking with a conversation. She had the look of a realization while he was confused. They mind linked while the doctor spoke to me.
"That is unusual and rare to hear from you, but anyway her condition." She spoke looking down at her papers. "She is extremely malnourished and will need weaned onto food, if she intakes too much too soon it will hurt her more than help. She also has many past injuries but none of them seem to be too extreme. It's as if they were to torture her than cause actual permanent harm. The scans didn't show anything serious either. She may have a concussion as well but we will monitor her while she's here to make sure it is not serious either.. I Would say give her a week to gain any strength and a month to fully recover.''
"Alpha Kaleb, dead serious question for you."
Luna Paige turned to me once her conversation with her mate ended. I don't think I've ever seen such a serious look on this woman's face ever. I looked to her awaiting the question that danced on her tongue.
"Has any of the Ancient Alphas ever found a mate?"
A mate?
Mate.
My wolf stirred in my mind at the word. The feelings stirring him filled my veins.
Mate. Our mate. That is what she is.....
Excuse me? Since when did Ancients have a right to get a mate?
Our times have come, our cursed lives will get better with her.
I snorted aloud. My wolf side was going crazy. Long have we wanted a mate, any of us, but our punishment from the goddess was to live as immortals and watch over the moral wolves. All while we could not have a mate of our own. It was our punishment for the deeds we did against our kind. The only reason for her to possibly give us one was for something that was to come. Something big that would require us to have mates.
"Never in my time have I seen one of us find a mate." I grumbled half to her and half to my wolf.
"Times are changing, maybe the goddess sees a need for you all to find one?" She spoke calmly back, "It would be nice to see you fawn over a female for once and be all lovey-dovey with her."
"If the goddess is giving the Ancients mates then something big is going to happen." Alpha Mark spoke going into deep thought.
"I doubt she's my mate."
"She doesn't know anything about you either right?" Asked the doctor, and I nodded. "Then let's test her when she wakes, I will make sure it's just us when you enter and we'll find out what her reaction is to seeing you. If she points out that you are her mate then it confirms it. Then you will have to figure out what to do about that information."
I sighed. I could tell they were eager at the thought of me finding a mate. I wasn't as enthusiastic but I was curious about it and decided to humor them with that plan. I nodded in agreement. The squeaking of the bed being wheeled down the hall and to the room caught my attention as two younger males brought her back. They jumped, startled at seeing me sitting in the room before looking to the doctor. She nodded and they pushed her to the spot in the corner, setting up her iv and monitors before leaving the room.
"Poor thing looks like she's been through hell and back." Paige commented as she walked over beside her.
Her lips pressed to a firm line as sympathy filled her expressions. Anger filled her face as she looked up at us.
"We are going to find those monsters and we are going to kill them." She spoke firmly.
I examined her face to figure out exactly how much her words meant before nodding in agreement. Everyone must have felt the same for she turned back to the female. She sat on the bed next to her and squeezed her hand. I don't understand why but it bothered me a bit. I felt a soft elbow to my side and looked at Alpha Mark smirking at me before turning to his mate.
"Paige Hon, let's go gather everyone that needs to know and update them on what's going on, and we won't mention anything about mates." He said calmly, looking to me briefly. "Instead we will tell them there is a high risk of an unknown danger and that means he needs to guard her till we figure out what the danger is exactly."
"That is probably the best for now till we find out more." I said before turning to the female, "hopefully she will have some answers when she wakes up."
I walked over beside her and looked down at her face. She wasn't as pale as when we first met but you could tell she was exhausted. I frowned as I reached out and brushed the back of my fingers against her cheek. Her face turned into my fingers and I froze.
I want to keep her, my wolf stirred in my head.
Me too.
