Kayleigh rolled over in her sleep. She loved her bed. Hating when she would have to get up early after going to bed late from extra long days of work. She could feel the sun hitting her face and warm it up. It felt nice to sleep in for once. The heavy comforter on top of her made it even harder to get out of bed. After a while and still not hearing her alarms going off, she opened her eyes to an unfamiliar ceiling. Her body froze as she wracked her brain for answers. She quickly sat up and looked around the room. It was a simple room with just the basics, not my room. The sandy walls with white trim brought her back to reality. This was the spare room in Kaleb's little home. The weight of everything that has happened hit her and looked down to her hands.
The sadness filled me and I became depressed. I pulled my knees to my chest as I processed everything again. The escape, finding my mate, being in the hospital and then getting released to Kaleb. His house was lovely. It was neat and organized. I didn't look like he had anyone else living in here with him, which as weird as it was it gave me relief. I drew circles my kneecap. I thought about him. After being taken captive, I gave up hope of finding my mate. I almost didn't even want to find him. My sister's mate was horrible, and made her miserable. She never spoke a word once they imprisoned us. I could feel her emotions though, be it an unexplainable twin bond. I could feel it, her pain, her resentment but also her love for him despite all of it. I felt so bad for her. She got paired with the worst male, one who did not deserve her. I sighed.
My mate, despite being one of the immortals did not seem bad. I could tell he took his work seriously. Their jobs were to overlook and regulate the mortal wolves' problems, only to step in when the situation would require it. Any other time was just to show their faces when special occasions would happen, at least one of them had to show. It was kind of rare for two immortals to appear in a pack let alone all four that resided in America. I looked around the room, deciding I should probably get up and dressed for the day. I walked over to the closet in corner of the room and opened it. It was small, which after spending a year in the same clothes, it felt like a luxury. I dug through the pile I shoved inside yesterday till I came across a fitted blank teal t-shirt and a pair of blue skinny jeans. The shower I took yesterday before the trip felt like the best thing I have ever done. I walked over through the bedroom door turning right and down the stairs to where the kitchen was located. When we came back, he gave me a quick tour of the house, explaining where everything was kept. Everything in this home was small. It looked like it was meant for a single person but there were enough bedrooms for at least four. I walked over to the fridge and opened the door.
Oh my gosh, actually rummaging through a fridge, I didn't think I would be able to do this again. They bought some groceries while we were out as well. I guess he didn't cook at home very often. I found the butter tub and walked over to the counter, leaving there to find the bread in the pantry. I quickly got it toasted and spread the butter across. As it melted from the heat, I took my first bite and moaned. It was the simplest thing that most would not think twice about, for me it was a basic thing that can be the best after so long of scraps. I scarfed down the two slices then quickly made two more and had them gone within minutes. Once the last piece was gone, I realized there was someone standing in the doorway. Defensively I turned to see an unfamiliar face standing there confused and dumbfounded. A young male, probably no older than thirty, looked like he was ready to take a break from a long travel. He still had his long jacket in hand even when entering the room. He also started to get defensive.
I froze. Was he here for me? Was he going to try to hurt me? I felt my breathing start to stagger as panic set in. If he was here to get me there was no way I could beat him in my state. Kaleb. I needed to call for him. He could protect me as much as I wasn't quite use to the thought. My body began shaking as I gather the strength to scream out Kaleb's name. My feet took me backwards till I found the corner of the kitchen. I wouldn't be able to get far to matter where I went.
"KALEB!" I screamed finally.
This startled the male making him even more confused. He was about to ask something when Kaleb's figure burst into the room. Stopping just after the male, and realizing it was only us three in the room. I could see the realization of the situation in his face and he turned to the male.
"Don't scare her Daniel," He scolded, "If you were in the area you should have said something."
"Sorry, I was going to head straight to your office but a new scent caught me off guard." He held his hands up defensively. "I followed it to find her really enjoying that toast and it threw me for a loop."
"I was going to introduce her once the three of you got back," He said turning to me, motioning to come next to him.
Still nervous I slowly wandered over till I reached his side, still half hiding behind him. His hand went to the middle of my back to try and comfort me a little bit. The male watched with this 'what in the world' kind of look.
"Daniel, this is Kayleigh," He introduced. "We just recently found out we are mates. She is also one of the missing wolves from a recent pack massacre."
His eyes widened at the word mate, but got wider still with the next bit.
"She's going to be referred with another name till we can solve it." He announced, "Kayleigh this is Daniel, he is one of the three who is, in simple terms, a follower."
The guy stood there processing what Kaleb just said with a look of disbelief. Eventually his mouth flopped open and closed a few times before words finally cam out.
"A mate? Are you serious right now?" He spoke like he couldn't believe it, "I know you've been getting lonely but really? You are too much 'follow the rules' type of person to go for it."
I took offense and huffed before turning my face away. I know it's hard to believe, none of them ever got a mate, but here I was as his mate. I began to pout.
"Daniel, you can even ask Mark and the others here, they've been getting a kick out of watching me squirm with this." He scolded. "She is my mate, I just found her, and any insults will get you into trouble from this point on."
There were a few minutes of silence before he finally sighed.
"Alright I understand," He apologized. "I apologize for my rudeness Luna."
I tensed at the use of the title. Was I considered a Luna with an immortal as a mate? I turned back to him unsure how to feel about it. He could see the look I had and looked like he was holding back a laugh.
"So, Kayleigh?"
I nodded. He looked like he was trying to recall something from the back of his head. The realization must have hit him like a ton of bricks as his stance changed into surprise.
"NO WAY!" He yelled, "Kayleigh Terra Wrights? Jasper Wrights' daughter from the Silver Auroras Pack Kayleigh?"
I nodded again a little startled.
"How the fuck did you just pop up out of thin air?" He questioned, "We've been searching for so long for clues to where any of the members of that pack went and got nothing!"
They were searching for us? I bit my lower lip trying to hold back the emotions that struck me so quickly. We all figured they thought us dead and were not searching for us. But here was someone who did, who still was searching. Standing before me baffled that one of the very people he was looking for just appearing out of thin air. Tears finally streamed down my face as I started sniffing and wiping at my face. I could sense Kaleb lean down trying to figure out why I was crying now, asking what was wrong. I shook my head and walked over to Daniel, giving him the biggest hug that I could muster with my strength. Just knowing there were people looking for us made me feel better. I felt him tense up with my sudden action.
"Thank you," I sniffled out, "Thank you so much for looking for my pack."
He relaxed and put and hand on my head, softly patting it.
"No problem," He finally spoke up.
We stayed like that for a little while before separating. Kaleb pulled me back into his body, holding me there like he was jealous. I could see the smirk on Daniel's face with the eyes of a troublemaker.
"Relax old man, I won't steal your mate," he spoke playfully.
The grin got bigger. He was enjoying the scene before him. Kaleb growled behind me.
