A young woman was sitting next to a strange looking animal. It seemed vaguely horse like, but instead of fur, it had smooth skin shimmering in all kinds of blues and greens. It didn't have any ears, and no mane or tail. Instead, it's legs were covered in wavy fins, and it's yellow eyes had a clever spark in them.
The woman turned her head when he entered. »You're one of the mages that came with the flash, aren't you?«
Unus responded with a mumbled yes and approached the horse. It pressed his head against his hand. The skin felt soft and smooth underneath his fingers.
»It's a Hippocamp,« the woman explained. »Legend has it the riders of Atlantis used these horses. Of course, that's just a myth, but the Hippocampi exist. They only come to the shore when they are about to foal. It's a very special moment.«
Unus sat down in the straw next to the horse. »So she is pregnant?«
»Yes, and I think the baby will come soon. I've been feeling it all day?«
»Feeling it?«
A warm smile crossed the woman's face. Hippocampi are sensitive animals. They often share their emotions and what they feel with the beings around them.«
He felt a stabbing pain in his muscles, wandering from his lower chest all the way down to his abdomen. Unus inhaled sharply. »What was that?«
»A contraction. As I said, we feel what she feels.«
